Every firearm owner (excepting those with a collection so large it becomes hard to remember the list itself) should be able to state, off the top of his or her head, the location and condition-of-readiness of every firearm they own.

I've heard nothing but bad things about the Walther PK380. Too bad, cuz it's a cool looking pistol.

pottie: First, let me say that I believe that everyone who would normally qualify for a concealed carry permit should be allowed to pack a gun on a plane. Second let me say that if you "forget" that you are carrying a gun, you should never be allowed to carry a gun.

I disagree with your first point; you carry a weapon wherever you think you might need to use it. You do not need to use a gun on a plane. You shoot and miss, maybe hit depending on your load, and you depressurize the aircraft. So much for saving anyone's life.

I've got a good sized collection of firearms, a concealed carry permit, and so on- I'm a big gun nut.

But I can't, for the life of me, understand these morons who "forget" one is in their luggage. I have the bags I take to the range and haul guns and ammo in. I have the bags I take on an airplane. The two sets of luggage are separate and will NOT ever be mixed. EVER. You can buy a set of really decent luggage for what a few hours of lawyer time in a criminal defense matter will cost you.

Should it result in a revocation of the right? No, I don't think so- you don't become a raving nutjob once past a TSA checkpoint. However, I do think the person should pay a hefty fine. Maybe that will spark some memory capability.

That's not how it goes.

A few bullet holes in the fuselage, while not a good thing, won't crash the plane. There was a 737 (Aloha Airlines) that became a convertible at altitude and landed safely- only a few people not belted in were lost. That's hardly one 9mm hole = dead airliner. Hell, I doubt anybody would even notice if not for the noise.

At the point where you have so many guns that you forget that you are carrying some of them around, you may have too many guns.

Nobody said he had too many guns. People don't have too many sets of car keys and seem to be
able to forget where they put them.

Nobody's even sayin' you can't carry a gun. All we're sayin' is you can't carry a gun in town.

mdeesnuts: It is possible these people 'forgot' because they carry every day and having a firearm on them is as routine as having a set of keys. If they're frequent travelers the security theater is just another pain in the ass routine as well.

Sure, it's possible, but that doesn't mean it's responsible. If carrying a firearm is "routine" to the point that you're not aware it's there, you're being negligent. Part of being a responsible firearm owner is being sure that it never leaves your control, and that means always being aware (and mindful) of its whereabouts and condition-of-readiness, not just having it somewhere handy.

That first link makes a ridiculous amount of assumptions, including "all CWP holders use safety slugs" and "all CWP holders are excellent shots in confined quarters under serious duress." Horse sh*t.

The second one is much more reasonably written and I appreciate the link, although I wasn't one to believe that the plane would disintegrate in the first place.

Either way, the 9/11 scenario isn't going to happen again. Hell even in 1 of those 4 planes the passengers revolted against the hijackers, and now with the cockpit security improvements the need for a gunfight at cruising altitude becomes nil. Check your handguns.

I can see maybe having a bullet that somehow got out of the box and ended up buried in the bag as forgettable. You were at the range on Wednesday, a box popped open and you only found 9 of the 10 that fell out. That's lazy but understandable. Forgetting the gun is just a bullshiat excuse.
