Those are fun, they look cool if you don't know the story, and they're worth a laugh if you do. A set of those would be perfect for the wedding gift for two med students, I'm sure there's a market somewhere.

The reason it's called that is that bone ash is actually added to the clay- usually a byproduct of the cows we make into hamburgers. It makes the clay even finer (porcelain is already very smooth, which allows it to retain as much strength as it does when made into thin shapes) and turns the end product somewhat translucent.
