Last week Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan tore into a chart-topping soap opera about the Ottoman Empire's longest-reigning Sultan, and RTUK has warned the show's makers about insulting a historical figure.

I'm pretty sure the scrotumless goatfarker Suleiman I was far too busy stuffing his own feces and the limbs he chewed from his still-living children into that magnificently ridiculous hat of his the bones of his own children into the magnificent hat of his. Either that or, you know, he was dead and couldn't exactly take offence.

I'm wondering about back to back airing of Superjail and Drawn Together.

And the wooshing sound you're hearing is Kemal Atatürk spinning in his grave.

Turkey is weird. From what I know, they are culturally conservative and religious, but they have a secular government. Something about a former ruler long since dead that basically forced the Turkish government to be secular.

Punishing a broadcaster for insulting dead people and mythic creatures is very different from hoofing Honey Boo Boo and Mundane Job Wars vs. Rednecks off the air because they are worthless programming.

And Turkey is by far the most rational and progressive of the predominantly Muslim nations...

Yup. One of the best pieces of advice that one can give to another about having a good life in Turkey is: "Don't be a Kurd."

CSB: My wife went to university with a Kurd who had fled to escape the wrath of the authorities for the crime of running a small publishing house. Did I mention that he printed books in Kurdish?

Just goes to show how absurd Islam and those who practice it are, and how fragile and worthless this belief system really is. They need to be protected from anything contrary to their ridiculous beliefs. This is why the Muslim world is stuck in the dark ages.

You're living in a century where a startling 46% of all U. S. Americans not only "don't have maps," but think that human beings were dropped onto the planet in their current form sometime in the last 10,000 years without benefit of evolution.

Hell, I'll be happy if that 46% of the US that's had it's head up its arse about evolution since before the Revolution would finally get with the times. (see my earlier comment there above)

At this point even Pat Robertson is willing to acknowledge the validity of evolution over strict Creatinism.

If 46% of America is lagging behind Pat Robertson on that topic, what hope is there that any predominantly Muslim nation will catch a clue anytime soon?

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk did try to ensure a secular government, and it's amazing it's lasted this long. The military, which was secular, traditionally ran things, but it's looking like the Islam-o-derps are gaining power over there, which is too bad.

Don't be absurd, there are no Armenians in Turkey, and there never were.

Also: Turkishness sucks!

CSB: The Armenian students group at my university put up posters a few years ago commemorating the genocide, featuring pictures of tomes of Turkish history with a gap at 1917. The Turkish student group put up counter posters with the gap filled by a book called Armenian Lies. This went on for a bit, until finally the Turks took what they thought was a conciliatory stance, which basically boiled down to "let's not bicker and argue about who killed who."

Turkey is about due for another bloodless coup, wherein the military jails the heads of the AK Party (Erdoğan, Gül et al.) and briefly takes over governance until another round of elections can be held. The 10% referendum needs to be overturned, and a return to secular statehood is required. Unfortunately, many of the younger career military are Islamist, while the older CHP (Atatürk supporters) members are retiring. The disappointments with the EU commerce have turned Turkey's interests east (pretty much every Egyptian taxicab is now manufactured by Tofaş), and the conflicts in other Islamist states might have the Turks considering a return to the caliphate.

If you think that insulting God will get you into trouble in Turkey, try insulting Mustafa Kemal. Fortunately, I know WW1 history, when our ship was in Istanbul any time some young fellow in uniform there asked "What do you think of our leader Ataturk?" and my standard reply "From what I've read, he was a great soldier and statesman who earned the respect of both friends and enemies." always got a smile and handshake. And in one case a pat on the back and asked if I'd be interested in going for a drink and to talk about Turkish history, and perhaps to the famous baths- no, I don't swing that way, and yes, in spite of regulations, a lot of the guys in their military do.
