If you take out the cultish overtones, this doesn't sound like a too terrible township idea.

Except for the 'prepper' and 'survivalist' stuff, and the 'protect each other' militia stuff, and the secession stuff, I mean.

A small town that wants to remain close to nature, far from big box stores, and close knit? That's actually pretty keen.

Awesome.

The folks in the Citadel will be storing thousands of gallons of their own urine. I bet the people who make jelly jars in Benewah County will like that.

There are literally thousands of small towns like that already. These kooks are looking for all of the things you took out.

The Citadel is a developing community of Patriots in the mountains of Idaho who believe in Jefferson's Rightful Liberty and have chosen to live amongst one another, and have sworn our lives, our fortunes and our Sacred Honor to defend one another and Liberty.

Oh goody, another eventual Ruby Ridge / Waco target. And where else but Northern Idaho, where the pure mountain derp flows down from heaven.

Right-wing compounds and communes are worse than liberal compounds and communes in that they probably don't allow marijuana.

So, no thanks.

Apparently, this town aint big enough for the both of us.

The very few less-than-positive responses we've had from folks currently living in Benewah County are interesting, but not unexpected. Every large project encounters pushback, even by people who have much in common with the "new folks". It's human nature.

Folks in Benewah are preppers - so are the folks coming to the Citadel.

Folks in Benewah like Liberty - so do the folks coming to the Citadel.

Folks in Benewah like the country lifestyle, the mountains, the fishing - so do the folks coming to the Citadel.

The folks in the Citadel will essentially live on their own 3,000 acres and won't be trespassing on anyone's private property.

The folks in the Citadel will get their hair cut in Benewah County - I bet the barber's and hair salons will like that.

The folks in the Citadel will need wells - I bet the well companies in Benewah will like that.

The folks in the Citadel will like hunting & fishing - I bet the local Guides will like that.

The folks in the Citadel will need propane, cut wood and fuel oil - I bet those companies will be pleased.

The folks in the Citadel will wear clothes - I bet the dress shops and clothing stores will like that.

The folks in the Citadel will be hiring people - I bet the unemployed in Benewah will like that.

The folks in the Citadel will eat - I bet the diners and livestock ranches will like that.

The new Citadel residents will be opening dozens of new businesses - I bet the local papers and radio stations will love the new ad revenue.

If the average Benewah resident, right now, is a hunter, fisherman, outdoorsman, shooter, prepper, survivalist, you'd think he wouldn't mind having a few thousand more like-minded people nearby who mind their own business, stay on their own property, are good neighbors, yet are willing to cover his back if ever needed. It's not like the folks in the Citadel are California Hippies.

3,000 acres is a tiny sliver of Benewah County, probably will never be seen by a single resident of the county who doesn't come looking for it.

Wal-Mart won't be coming to town. Skyscrapers won't be on the horizon.

The only problem I see is that a few locals feel as if they weren't properly asked for their permission.

We aren't at that stage yet. But the naysayers found out about this new project because they are preppers - and the project is a town of preppers.

Frankly, I don't see the downside for anyone.

Me either. All you crazies and nutballs head out to rural Idaho and derp freely. If we could cut off your internet we'd be set.

When they talk about "Jefferson's Rightful Liberty" they mean the right to hold other human beings as property and to bang that property whenever they want, right?

Step 4 - Super happy funtime.

You sure are right about Step 2. Here's the "Patriot Agreement all residents must sign:

One: Once ratified, this list of conditions may only be altered by unanimous consent of all parties governed by the Agreement,

Two: Every able-bodied Patriot aged 13 and older governed by this Agreement shall annually demonstrate proficiency with the rifle of his choice by hitting a man-sized steel target at 100 yards with open sights at the Citadel range,

Three: Every able-bodied Patriot aged 13 and older governed by this Agreement shall annually demonstrate proficiency with a handgun of choice by hitting a man-sized steel target at 25 yards with open sights at the Citadel range,

Four: Every able-bodied Patriot of age within the Citadel will be armed with one AR15 variant in 5.56mm NATO, at least 5 magazines and 1,000 rounds of ammunition. The responsibility for providing arms and ammunition shall be the head of household for every member of the household. Every able-bodied Patriot will be responsible for maintaining a Tactical Go Bag or Muster Kit to satisfy the Minuteman concept. Details TBD and posted elsewhere,

Five: Every household within the Citadel will remain stocked with sufficient food, water and other preps (to be detailed elsewhere) for every member of the household for a duration of one year,

Six: Every able-bodied Patriot aged 13 shall pass a class sponsored by the Citadel on basic emergency medical care, the courses focused on battlefield and wilderness environments every three years,

Seven: Every child attending Citadel schools, with parental discretion for maturity, shall have as part of every class semester a basic marksmanship and safety firearms curriculum (with attendance/training of/by the parent if so desired) leading to the proficiency test on the child's 13th birthday as a "Coming of Age" moment,

Eight: All Patriots shall agree to remain armed with a loaded sidearm whenever visiting the Citadel Town Center,

Nine: Each Household will provide ONE able-bodied Patriot (aged 13 and older) who shall muster one Saturday per month for Martial/Support Training, as set forth by the militia Commanders of the community, and once annually a full scale Town Defense Drill for all households and residents. In the course of every calendar year every able-bodied Patriot in every household must participate in at least one monthly muster,

Ten: Town Militia will hold a yearly award/recognition ceremony on April 19th each year to celebrate Patriot's Day. This will be a public event with all families welcome and encouraged to attend,

Eleven: Violations of this Agreement will result in review by a selection of residents and an appropriate disciplinary action taken, up to the most severe action of the loss of Lease and expulsion from the community,

Twelve: All Citizens agree to accept dispute resolution by an arbitration panel of peers in the event a problem cannot be resolved between residents.

Speaking of the headline, I never really understood why Volvos and Subarus are especially popular among American liberals (and I am an American liberal).

Nothing against those cars, they're fine, but I don't see what would make them particularly attractive to liberals. They're not especially fuel-efficient, environmentally-friendly, etc. As far as I know, those companies don't have better labor practices than any other multinational carmaker.

Priuses (Prii?) I can understand.

If you do wish to compost your own poop, go vegan first.

You know who else fetishized the gun? Also, #12 is just asking for a tyranny when the 'panel of peers' decides to become semi-permanent, for the duration of the emergency.

Fascism is symbolized by a bundle of sticks for a reason.

Pretty much, yeah. They support the man who continually plotted to remove Federalists from power, and who thought that black people made excellent farm implements.

Ironically, most of them completely oppose the anti-religious deist (a militant atheist if born today) who favored invention and science, and who despised banks and speculative investors. That seems strange, given that they are the same person...

A hippie commune with guns that are supplied by a company linked to their webpage... I hope you're carrying the right kind of 1911, the one made by patriots for patriots.

I know Poe's law specifically refers to fundamentalism but I am starting to think modern conservationism is close enough to a religion to qualify. They ignore science for dogma and I can't tell if satire from honest ideas anymore.

Extremists isolated in groups tend to become more extreme because extremism is the shortest path to higher esteem within the group.

The 2nd article of their Patriot Agreement:

Every able-bodied Patriot aged 13 and older governed by this Agreement shall annually demonstrate proficiency with the rifle of his choice by hitting a man-sized steel target at 100 yards with open sights at the Citadel range

I think they meant to say - government agent sized .

Also, would they really allow someone who is NOT able bodied into their crew
I can`t see the place having wheelchair ramps and such....

Which also coincides with the Waco incident and the OKC bombing. Of course.

It sounds like a castle and a medieval fiefdom, on top of which will include raising an army.
I'll bet the plan to be totally self-sufficient and "live off of the land" and probably not pay taxes. Which makes the line in their penultimate overly defensive rant "What are we considering that hurts you, takes food from your family table or money from your pocket? " even better

It's clearly not a commune because " It's not like the folks in the Citadel are California Hippies.". It's gotta be hard to gain support when you are disdainful of practically everyone and you sound like you pissed off the people who live there.

Dunno for certain, but I'm under the impression Subarus US plant is a Zero Landfill facility. I think they have a nature preserve on site too.

So, there's that.
