Ahhh...good old political correctness and it's cousin, cognitive dissonance. On the one hand, we're all supposed to tacitly acknowledge and accept the fact that large numbers of Mexicans illegally enter the US and take low-level manual labor jobs doing landscaping or working in food service. OTOH, acknowledging this reality constitutes racism.

And yes, Mexicans smoke weed. So do Americans, Asians, Europeans, and Africans. Hell, people at the research stations in Antarctica probably have a stash. So, again, how is acknowledging reality "racist"?

I think the difference is that A) the Irish are no longer a population in the U.S. that is habitually exploited and subject to hostile treatment both literally and in the media, so stereotyping the Irish doesn't have the same meaning or carry the same cultural impact; B) it isn't just the sombreros, it's also the signs that characterize Mexicans as lazy and/or stoned lawn workers. It's pretty much a Mexican minstrel show.

I teach at Penn State, so I'm looking to see if one of these idiots is in my class. Plus I'm getting a kick, etc...

Where the heck are the mariachis, the flamenco dancers, the girls wearing Sharpied eyebrows and the loads of makeup that make clowns look natural? Why would it be a problem?

Really?

You don't see how "slavery is the one thing that defines black pride" is offensive?

manimal2878: You can be a white guy. You can even identify as a white guy, but why would you have pride in that? Who gives a fark, yay, your skin is white. Who cares. Your skin color had nothing to do with your accomplishments.

You can say the exact same thing about black pride.

manimal2878: If you're irish or whatever you could say, your irish values and upbringing, lead to whatever inventions and etc. You could reasonably have pride in that since there is a history and cultural background

I don't see how you can draw a line saying that "irish" isn't too broad, "black" isn't too broad, but "white" is.

manimal2878: I don't know how Obama views himself, I imagine because of his skin he sees himself as black, I imagine he probably sees the historical implications of being black in america and identifies with other blacks because of where he was raised and when, he would probably describe himself as having pride in being a black american.

If it is based on your "view" then you can have anytyp of group pride.

manimal2878: But It would make more sense for a white person to say irish american if they wanted to display having pride in their background.

I am nto sure what your background is, but there are many "white" american who have no real connection to the coutnries they left generations ago, and many who probably don't have a clear grip on where exactly they are from.

manimal2878: White american on the other hand tells nothing of the history of a person, all it tells is the color of their skin

White american doesn't tell you anymore than black american.

If you are able to lump Obama into "black" despite him not having that histroy that you says unites them then you are admitting it tells nothing of a person's history.

manimal2878: I'm trying to explain why White Prid ...

The answer to almost everyone of your questions is this: The history of white and black Americans are not the same. Therefore the significance of identifying as white or black, or having white or black pride are not equivalent.

Fascinatin' question, and I was just formulatin' a similar question and trying not to sound like an ignoramus.

Seems to me, being a mite younger than President Obama (my brother was born the exact same day: 8/4/1961), and I remembered the Black Power movement. I remember the MOVES in Philadelphia and the Black Panther stuff in Oakland, CA. Surely President Obama was conscious of these movements in his childhood and without question he experienced youth as as a Black kid/teen, same as any Black kid born to black parents, descendants of slaves as far back as the trade went.

While he may not have had grandparents or great-grandparents to tell him stories of Jim Crow laws, sharecropping on the old plantation, etc., he's been subject to the same stuff the other kids have.

Also, if "black pride" is only for people who had culture ripped away, and no choice to come here, then you are saying Obama can have no black pride.

There are plenty of white peopel who don';t have a good idea where their family came from, and even if they do don't have a real cultural connection.

You can be a white guy. You can even identify as a white guy, but why would you have pride in that? Who gives a fark, yay, your skin is white. Who cares. I'm trying to explain why White Pride and Black Pride are not really the same thing. I don't know how Obama views himself, I imagine because of his skin he sees himself as black, I imagine he probably sees the historical implications of being black in america and identifies with other blacks because of where he was raised and when, he would probably describe himself as having pride in being a black american. I agree.

Could that be because there is no such thing as "White?" You are either British, or Irish, or Scottish, or whatever. Thus it is perfectly acceptable, for example, to have irish pride. No one batts an eye at this. White pride on the other hand is a sure sign of being a racist.

The reason there is such a thing as just Black Pride, is because of slavery, Black Americans don't actually know their ancestry in many cases.

Using that logic Obama isn't black.

What? Why isn't he black? I don't see how anything I have said, can logically lead one to say he isn't black.

If I follow you correctly there is no such thing as "white". There such a thing as white skin, I would have phrased it better as, there is no good reason for white pride.

Which means there is no such thing as "black", except that due to black american not knowing where they come from and the shared experience/history of african slaves in the US. There is black skin. There is a good reason for black pride as I explained above.

Obama doesn't have that shared "experience/history" so how is he black?

Like I said, Obama has black skin, therefore he is black.

Thinking about this more, I think you missed the point. Say there is a white irish guy. He is irish, he knows his irish culture, he would celebrate being irish, not being white. Say there is a black guy, he doesn't know if he is zulu or swahili or whatever, all he has as an identifier is that he black, thus the black pride movement was about trying to connect blacks, that forcibly had their true culture removed from them, to a common culture. Black Pride is a place holder for lost cultural connection, white americans came here by choice, there is no need for them to have white pride as cultural place holder.

I'm guessing you are trying to make some connection to Obama being Kenyen. That's irrelevant. Obama still has black skin, and the larger populace of Black America was disconnected for their cultural heritage. The two things have nothing to do with each other.

The way I've deciphered it is that while people can be bigoted racially, or personally racist, only those in power can determine how racism manifests itself in society. What you and I do has no bearing on our culture, really, and most of the racial problems in this country come from centuries of legal and institutional racism by white leaders against blacks and natives, and later anyone else that showed up. There are still powerful echoes of Jim Crow laws and attitudes that I see (I live in South Carolina) regularly; I had no idea that such things were still in such effect until I moved from the North.

So while it is possible that you and I could face discrimination in our lives (I'm assuming you're also a white male, with the name "Liam" and all) it is unlikely that our lives would be derailed by institutional or legal racism.

Saying that the Japanese aren't racist and that there isn't racism in Japan is HORSE SH*T, however. Americans are far too new to have invented racism in any form.

It's a sorority, conformity is their goal.

And group cunnilingus on Friday nights.

Which is of course Spanish for "night of the ninos".

I'm not sure what that was exactly, but I like it! Thanks. Now I'll have that song stuck in my head for days.

Zumaki: Stereotypes and cliches are based upon reality. This party was harmless.

Exactly this. I have to say though, that as a Chicano, I am offended that they went with the wrong stereotype. You wanna dress up as Mexicans? Where the heck are the mariachis, the flamenco dancers, the girls wearing Sharpied eyebrows and the loads of makeup that make clowns look natural? Or the cleaning ladies, lunch ladies, McDonald's workers, nannies, janitors, and the occasional Mexican wearing a wifebeater while drinking Bud Light? I mean come on!

We have bigger things to worry about. It's a f*cking party. I'm sure no real Mexicans were hurt.

People should be happy that they went for sombreros and lawn care instead of giving a more accurate portrait of Mexico by executing a dozen students from a rivaling sorority and putting the dismembered corpses on public display as a warning to others.

That would make for a much more entertaining news story.

this is so boring. Looks like one or two of them took a road trip down to South of the Border hellhole and bought their supply out of souvenir ponchos and sombreros. And the signs? Thats so stupid. I hate Soro-stitutes

big pity to peeps with no sense of humor. enjoy calling people who don't see life through your eyes racists, bigots, blah blah blah. everybody picks on and jokes about most other folks but can't do it in the open, honestly. everyone but uptight arseholes and butthurt college jerkoffs, activist dipshiats and holier than thou hypocrites. what bullshiat. especially in the USA melting pot where we have assholes from every country going. being in america is having non-stop comedy set-ups and joke punchlines everywhere you look. it's awesome. you don't get this kind if entertainment in third world shiatholes my friend.

Generation_D: Since I grew up in a college town, these never seem to leave my brain completely:

Whats the first thing a sorority girl does in the morning? A: walkshome. Alt: Puts her panties in her purse, then walks home.

Whats the difference between a toilet seat and a sorority girl? The toilet seat doesn't want to be taken to dinner after you use it.

.... and a few dozen more...

Most are interchangeable with blonde jokes, but still good. My favorite is," What is the sorority girl mating call? 'I am soooooooo drunk!!!'"

serial_crusher: OregonVet: What, you're only allowed to have a Mexican themed party one day a year now?

I actually came in here to criticize them for that. Cinco de Mayo only!

So, sororities are allowed to call themselves "Greek", and have a toga party, thereby implying that all Greek people wear togas, and that's not racist, but a Mexican party with ponchos and sombreros is?

/CSB, when I was a junior in high school looking at colleges, there was a family from Greece in my tour group. The tour guide kept talking about the Greek life, and identified sorority row as "where all the Greeks live". The Greek mother said quite earnestly, "wow I didn't realize there was a big Greek population here. Kid, you should go to this school." and awkwardlarity ensued.

You are trying to apply logic to Political Correctness. Common mistake. Political Correctness is an emotional overreaction to a perceived insult where none exists.

My fraternity (founded by a bunch of ROTC cadets who thought most frats were full of assholes) held a Pearl Harbor Party on December 7th. Did we hold a memorial service for World War II vets? No, we dressed Hawaiian and got bombed. Featured drink besides beer was kamikazes. Fantastic friggen party, good times, no apologies.

That's the problem, they didn't hire real Mexicans. A Mexican family went to bed hungry because an Anglo stole his job.

As a person of German descent, I want to complain about every Oktoberfest ever held. Beer, lederhosen, chicken dance...when will the stereotyping of my people end??!1!1!!1!!!!

In this case, at least children aren't being systematically raped, so this is actually PROGRESS for Penn State, isn't it?

I'd like to see Jerry Sandusky moved to a Mexican jail, btw.

These are suburban girls that have no concept of barrio life.

Yeah, the lack of creativity here is just lame. Nearly all of them went with sombrero, poncho, and mustache.
