The Voice of Doom: The Muthaship
We have bigger things to worry about. It's a f*cking party. I'm sure no real Mexicans were hurt.

People should be happy that they went for sombreros and lawn care instead of giving a more accurate portrait of Mexico by executing a dozen students from a rivaling sorority and putting the dismembered corpses on public display as a warning to others.

While stereotyping all Mexicans by the actions of the Mexican drug cartels is pretty stupid, I wouldn't really have a problem, had the sorority taken your suggestion, if only because it would have rid the world of 12 sororitards.

Zumaki: Stereotypes and cliches are based upon reality. This party was harmless.

Exactly this. I have to say though, that as a Chicano, I am offended that they went with the wrong stereotype. You wanna dress up as Mexicans? Where the heck are the mariachis, the flamenco dancers, the girls wearing Sharpied eyebrows and the loads of makeup that make clowns look natural? Or the cleaning ladies, lunch ladies, McDonald's workers, nannies, janitors, and the occasional Mexican wearing a wifebeater while drinking Bud Light? I mean come on!

You nailed it by mentioning Bud Light. Back in high school, I worked at a grocery store.....and it didn't take long to notice that Bud Light was the top choice of our Latino customers.

'round thes parts it's Tecate and Modelo Especial.

Doom MD: This merited a newspiece? Seriously, who cares? Call me when they're throwing a watermelon and fried chicken mixer, replete with 40's, blackface, mami dolls, stirring renditions of "Pick A Bale of Cotton", and whipping a brother named Toby.

This merited a blog post. There is no layout concerns, advertising/print media cost trade-offs, timing, etc... they put scarcely more effort into that article than we do into our posts on here. If they think it, they can post it.

Cythraul: How to have a cultural themed party without it looking racist? Hmmm.. difficult.

Especially considering that they can't even throw cuisine into the mix. Sororities at Penn State have "houses" that are actually just one level or a pair of levels in a dorm building. They have no kitchens, so that means "order delivery from La Bamba and get a keg of Natty or maybe rent a margarita machine. Wait, skip the food; I'm feeling fat."

Culturally insensitive and unoriginal, but like someone said at least they didn't murder half of the rival Tri-Deltas. Chi-Os and Tri-Delts were always the top of the hot-chick pecking order in the very large sorority system at Penn State when I was there. They are all very good at raising money for children's cancer treatment and research and looking hot and that's about it.

2012-12-05 10:09:16 AM
When people talk about a Mexican theme party they mean salsa, tacos, enchiladas, maybe a pinata, not a bunch of idiots dressing like what would be considered ruining a perfectly good blanket in Mexico.

I'm just waiting for the "Black people" theme party, all of them in black face and holding a bucket of KFC.

The black sorority sisters are in the black sororities. I believe the PHC is a form of voluntary segregation, because I've known sorostitutes of all races in the "white" sororities but only black girls in AKA, etc... My sample pool is limited, though.

"3. How large is the Latino population?
Hispanics make up the largest ethnic minority in the country. In 2010, the estimated Hispanic population in the U.S. was 50.5 million, constituting 16% of the nation's total population.
This estimate does not include the 3.7 million residents of Puerto Rico."

"12. What types of jobs do Latinos hold?
The Hispanic population is represented in a wide variety of occupations. For instance, in 2009 there were 57,000 Hispanic physicians and surgeons; 202,000 middle school teachers; 74,000 chief executives of businesses; 30,000 lawyers; and 284,000 fire fighters. In 2010, only about one in five (19%) Hispanics worked in management and professional occupations. However, Hispanics are disproportionately employed in service and support occupations. More than one in four (26%) work in service occupations; 21% in sales and office jobs; 16% in natural resources, construction, and maintenance jobs; and 17% in production, transportation, and material-moving occupations."

Not saying these Caitlins aren't sheltered twits with no understanding of other cultures or sympathy (how should I know?), but are we supposed to pretend that the largest ethnic group in the country does not have 1 in 4 members working in service industries?

Where do culture and statistics end, and PC sensitivity begin?

Jezebel is the same. Pretty much the entirety of the Gawker network operates on this level. It also draws retards from places like 4chan into the site to "debate" them and vent their outrage. Trolling works, and it works well.

I think the difference is that A) the Irish are no longer a population in the U.S. that is habitually exploited and subject to hostile treatment both literally and in the media, so stereotyping the Irish doesn't have the same meaning or carry the same cultural impact; B) it isn't just the sombreros, it's also the signs that characterize Mexicans as lazy and/or stoned lawn workers. It's pretty much a Mexican minstrel show.

I knew this was coming.
.
So what? Does that matter to the point? No. And if you read the link I posted you'd see that 65% of the Latino population are Mexican.

"1. Who makes up the U.S. Hispanic population?
Hispanics are an ethnically and racially diverse population. In 2009, the Latino population on the U.S. mainland was composed of Mexican Americans (65%), Puerto Ricans (9%), Cubans (3.5%), Salvadorans (3.2%), and Dominicans (2.7%). The remainder is composed of Central Americans, South Americans, or people of other Hispanic or Latino origins (15.4%)."

There is no breakdown in the link as to whether or not the ethnic divisions are the same among occupations.

But again, it doesn't matter for the purposes of general perception. I doubt many people (even Latinos) can always tell the difference in ethnicities among Latinos.

I was going to say the same thing, but then I thought about the fact that if we interpreted "Mexican" to mean first-generation immigrants from Mexico to the US, that percentage would probably be even higher, especially if we included those here illegally (not sure if that survey did or not).

If the sorority intended the party to be themed after people actually living in Mexico, the stats would be irrelevant.
