Why couldn't someone just carry it out of the school and call the cops? Even if it is explosive it's probably been banging around her backpack all day. Carry it out of the school and let school go on.

more than one, do you want to be the one carrying outside when it goes off, exploding inside the empty school is safer than exploding outside where shrapnel could kill others

so were you asking as serious question?

I am more impressed and surprised that the girl wasnt arrested and shot.
guess it is just america which is batshiat crazy

No, it is what I'd think would be a serious instinct, if you're that concerned. You can carry it the hell out of there quicker than you can evacuate a school, grenades are designed to do anything but randomly explode.

It's almost like most people don't know very much about explosives or something.

Me? I don't, but I know enough about myself to know I'd leave it for the cops. My inner doglover would want to tell the kids "I'll just take this outside." and then drive out to a lake and see what it can do. But that's so many flavors of illegal and irresponsible I'd just say "Fark it. Kids, outside NOW." and basically have an extended recess until the bomb squad arrives. God knows how long that takes.

violentsalvation: grenades are designed to do anything but randomly explode.

this statement makes a huge number of assumptions:
1) that average joe can tell a REAL grenade, from a fake one
2) a real one from a home made one
3) that explosives are stable over time, which is completely false
4) that I want the moron in the school throwing the grenade out the window while I am walking by

in the end,
put it down
evacuate the building
let an expert deal with it
TADA
little or no chance of accidental explosion

what I really dont want is the average moran making any kind of decision when it comes to explosives other than, put it down and RUN AWAY

Chuck it at namatad is right here in the handbook. See, Article 1 Section 12: If you see namatad, chuck random explosives at him. Nothing bad can happen.

What do you mean you don't think it's official. No I didn't just pencil that in on a blank page. I don't care that it matches my handwriting. You can't prove nothin! You hear me? Nothin!

Better not tell this guy that the yellow bus has 50 gallons of explosive liquid sloshing around in it.

As someone who has had the sheriff's department called when I brought some replica (non-firing) flint lock pistols for a history demo; I find this oddly in line with personal experience; and her parents way out of line with common sense. Always check something that looks dangerous with the proper authorities.

By the way, I, and my dad had the pistols cleared with the instructor and the principal... but a random teacher saw me putting them back in my pack, after the school day had ended, in the escort of my father, that "Bad Things" were going to happen.

//This was in '88, and my dad is an NRA/Youth Shooting instructor

I want to make a snide comment about zero tolerance (had the scenario played out in America, of course) but I just can't summon enough bile.

The teacher gets arrested for molestation?

Oh... and a P.S: My Dad was the youth shooting instructor for the school I was attending.

I remember going into antique stores when I was a kid, they would have dummy grenades that had been hollowed out. You could buy them for a few bucks each

Panic over a little girl and her dummy grenade.

Aren't they supposed to be a nation of badass convicts?

OK, what's the big deal? It IS "show and tell," after all:

"Here, pass this around. It's a weapon designed to kill or incapacitate the enemy and you only have to come close. Hey, be careful not to pull that out....."

I heard namatad had an M-80 go off in his hand once and it DIDN'T EVEN HURT. One of the real ones too, not that new crap they have now.

1)an active pineapple grenade is OD green with yellow stripe:
www.militaryfactory.com
1a)A training grenade is unpainted (with a blue top) with a big hole on the bottom which effectively de-mils it so that it cannot be used as a grenade
cdn103.iofferphoto.com

Now of course the green one could simply be a replica, but I'd be a lot more cautious with it. The other is what they sell at surplus stores everywhere. Now (slim) chances (especially for a much older pineapple model) could be that it is a 'live' training grenade which has an active blasting cap inside. These will still have an active spring that kicks the spoon off and will make a 'bang'. But the body keeps most of the blasting cap fragments inside. Some will exit the hole in the bottom, and can cause flesh wounds, but are not deadly. (Unless of course maybe you stick your eyeball right up agianst the hole as it pops...). You can test this by pulling the pin (while holding the spoon) and seeing if there is any pressure on the spoon. If not, it is a deactive training grenade. if there is pressure, just go outside, pop the spoon, chuck it on the ground, wait for the pop, place the spoon back on the grenade, stick the pin back in, and put on your desk as a paper weight.

2. Homemade grenades look homemade. Military ones look like they were made by the military.

3. C-4, the explosive used in pineapple and the newer 'baseball' grenades is quite stable. That's why they use it. You could kick the stuff around or beat it with a hammer all day and it won't explode. Hell you can set it on fire, and all it will do is burn. (Soldiers used it for cooking in the field...but it does make a poisionous gas....)

4. Can't argue with that one. I'd hate to be strolling along and hear 'tink-tink' and look down and see a farking grenade. Of course my first reaction would to toss it back through the window it came out of.

If memory serves correctly the kill zone for a grenades blast radius is only 5 meters. For this they evacuated the side streets as well as the school?

You can buy them on Amazon still, the price has just gone up a little.

The kill zone is based on the grenade exploding on an open range. If an explosive device like a grenade goes off inside a closed-in space like a building, you've got a whole different situation.
