I always hear that in Dylan's voice.

I shot a man in Reno
just to watch him die.

And let's not forget The Farker's Lament:

Well, I woke up Sunday morning
With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt.
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad
So I had one more for dessert.

Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes
And found my cleanest dirty shirt.
Then I sat down at my keyboard and logged on
And fumbled onto Fark to greet the derp.

Nice shout out to Ray Stevens there. Too bad he went off the neocon deep end at the end there.

Columbia dropped Johnny Cash in 1986.

I wondered what was taking them so long to release something like this.

I'd guess estate (Johnny, June and Vivian's) licensing issues.

The Columbia Cash grab. That is the only reason for a boxed set of old records.

If this is a "traditional" record company. They own them outright and now that everyone involved is dead, they don't have to share any profits.

Might take a month or two and some budget manipulation but I will have this, oh yes.

I've found if you like music, you like Johnny Cash - country music fans love him, blues fans love him, rock fans love him, even metal and punk fans love him. I don't think you can say that about another artist's entire body of work.

Hmm, maybe Tom Waits or Bob Dylan, but only if you include covers.

63 discs?!? What a piker. Real men release 104-disc box sets.

2012-12-05 12:40:37 PM
I love Johnny Cash, but there's a lot of pretty sappy and mediocre country music among those 63 discs. Go with the complete Sun works and add in the Americana series and a handful of other Columbia releases. You'll save money and eliminate a lot of waste.

2012-12-05 12:54:42 PM
I think it was the late great Johnny Cash that once said,
" Hello, I'm Johnny Cash. "

I shot a man in Reno
'cause they cancelled Firefly

I think the thing that really made him great is that Cash could cover someone else's song and make it totally his own. That's something that almost nobody else can do.

devilEther: dammit, can't afford it. my bills are all due and the babies need shoes.

Get his last few albums from Rick Rubin and the American label. There's some truly great stuff there. He's got some cover versions of things you'd never expect to see on a country album - Rusty Cage from Soundgarden and Thirteen by Danzig to start off.

2012-12-05 01:45:52 PM
Hope they do some single disc releases out of it... because while I might find 63 discs overkill, I'd love to get Everybody Loves A Nut on CD finally.

Everything he did with Rubin was great, but some of the best stuff didn't make the albums.

If you haven't listened to "Unearthed," I highly recommend it. It's a box set with lots of good stuff from the Cash/Rubin partnership.

Here's an example - I can't believe this didn't make it on an album!

Johnny Cash - Heart of Gold

with backup by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers; guitar solo by John Frusciante (ex-Red Hot Chili Peppers)

I think there exists a duet with JC and Neil Young out there. Might be and interesting compare and contrast.

Hank Williams Sr and Elvis are probably the only other ones I can think of with that kind of cred.

The Bear Family did a pretty decent job of this and didn't take 63 cds either.
