(Metro)   The Carolina Panthers hadn't won a single coin toss for the entire 2012 season, so Sunday, they let fans pick via Facebook.....and they blew it, running to streak to 0-13. The odds of that happening? 192/1   (metro.co.uk) divider line 43

Subby sucks at math

2012-12-04 08:45:01 PM
My formula might be off, but in order to get the odds of losing 13 straight 50/50 coin tosses, I'd multiply 1 x 0.5 x 0.5 x 0.5 . . . 13 times over and I get 0.000122. Please tell me where I fail at 6th grade math, because surely I do.

If they were a professional coin flipping franchise, they'd be the Cubs.

Dear Jerk: 13x? More like 1/8192

Or, for the betting man, 8191:1.

2012-12-04 08:54:57 PM
I assume you mean 8192:1

There have been 15,713 NFL games played in 92 years, so being very sloppy with stats since I don't really want to think tonight, losing 13 coin tosses in a row could be assumed to happen about twice by now.

Still pretty crazy though...

They should choose heads or tails, then pick the opposite of their choice

/if you are consistently wrong make it work for you

But they're DUE, so picking against themselves would be a sure way to fail!

They keep picking 'Edge' and the coin stubbornly lands on either heads or tails.

Nope. 8191:1 and 1/8192 are equivalent

Finally, celebrate a winning coin toss, and repeat every step before the next game.

That's the odds of any single coin flip. We're talking about the odds of loosing 13 in a row. Big difference.

Imagine you went to vegas, put down $20 and doubled your bet every time you lost. Would you have any money left for next weeks coin toss?

Thats why that strategy doesnt work.

I already know how this is going to end.

They finally win their first coin toss and choose to kick...then the other team runs the kickoff to the house for six.

Ahh. I honestly didn't notice the headline. I've become so accustomed to terrible grammar my brain filters out all but the most egregious of offenses.

They would only call the coin flip when they're the visitors, so for about half of those it was out of their control...

It doesn't matter who calls heads or tails. You still have a 50/50 chance of winning the coin flip every time.
