I'll make 3 movies of shiatty fanfic and completely ruin both the Force and Darth Vader and then re-edit the original trilogy to make them suck with added extended musical numbers and alien frogs burping

AverageAmericanGuy: People who get new houses at the end of Extreme Makeover don't deserve it. It's charity. They deserve to live in squalor.

It's fine to like a show or the morals it tries to portray. But it's a gift of charity, not something the people have earned.

You are the worst. It's hard to believe that there are some people in the world who can't accept that needy people deserve all the help they can get. It's not like you or me who can afford to spend all day judging people on the internet. I find your lack of faith truly disturbing.

Holy hell, it always amazes me when someone can turn a generous act by a wonderful group into something horrible...at least in their own mind. The 501st does all this stuff FOR FREE, they donate TONS of time, make their own outfits, pay for their own travel...they are simply super dedicated people who love to help others out by visiting children's hospitals, public events and, in this case, helping build someone a house. Disney has nothing to do with it.

Oddly, one of my favorite things about them was how hardcore into RP they were in Star Wars Galaxies, to the point the Devs had DARTH FRIGGIN VADER show up in game to RP with them.

RoyFokker'sGhost: To quote someone more level-headed (Randy Milholland via his webcomic Something*Positive): It'll be like Marvel all over again. Sure they'll whore it out some, but no more than Lucas ever did. If you want to hate Disney, I can give you a fark-ton of valid reasons, but this isn't one of 'em.

That. You can't out-whore Lucas. You just can't.

And why not? Hell, TV shows should be our primary source of helping the downtrodden.  They get what they need and we get to feel like we're actually helping by staring passively at a flickering box. Everybody wins!

I was taking exception to the wording that claimed that these people were somehow deserving of the huge benefit they get. But as you say, it's not about deserving but about charity. Happiness and generosity are endless quantities that I personally think one should spread if you're lucky enough to have what a lot of people don't. I've got no problem with that. In fact, that's a pretty cool thing.

But once you start saying that people deserve something, that resolves them of gratitude, and we need more gratitude and feelings of indebtedness rather than less.

The bum who spits on someone who walks by ignoring his begging has no gratitude. He has no concept of receiving charity because somewhere along the line he got it into his fool head that he deserves the spare change of strangers.

But what about the bum who just fell on hard times outside his control? Who doesn't think he deserves it but people help anyway out of the goodness of their heart? Not saying that there aren't those who try to exploit this generosity in others, but it's a pretty damn cynical worldview to have the 100% absolute "all poor people deserve to live in squalor because they're poor people" circular reasoning it sounds like you're proposing.

The article mentions that the family in question had a firefighter in the family and they lost their home in an accident. If they had spent lots of time and money before that contributing to charity, do they DESERVE anything? IDK, maybe you're just being picky about the choice of words and going by what I've seen you post on Fark in the past I think you enjoy getting bites but it's a really strange thing to get pissed off that you perceive people to be without gratitude and instead have a sense of being owed something based on a random scenario you dreamed up. I think everyone deserves some TLC, even if they're broke or an addict or whatever. You could argue that they don't 'deserve' to be on TV but I guess we can agree to disagree. Just seems pretty joyless.

What makes you or I "deserve" our jobs, or our friends, or the life we were born into? Sometimes it's just a word.

Holy...fark. What the Hell is wrong with some people? Complaining about members of the 501st doing charity work? Please, someone track down this Nikki Finke at Deadline and tell him/her about R2-KT. And film it; I want to see their head literally explode from the righteous derp.
