People who get new houses at the end of Extreme Makeover don't deserve it. It's charity. They deserve to live in squalor.

It's fine to like a show or the morals it tries to portray. But it's a gift of charity, not something the people have earned.

Holy hell, it always amazes me when someone can turn a generous act by a wonderful group into something horrible...at least in their own mind. The 501st does all this stuff FOR FREE, they donate TONS of time, make their own outfits, pay for their own travel...they are simply super dedicated people who love to help others out by visiting children's hospitals, public events and, in this case, helping build someone a house. Disney has nothing to do with it.

Oddly, one of my favorite things about them was how hardcore into RP they were in Star Wars Galaxies, to the point the Devs had DARTH FRIGGIN VADER show up in game to RP with them.

You are the worst. It's hard to believe that there are some people in the world who can't accept that needy people deserve all the help they can get. It's not like you or me who can afford to spend all day judging people on the internet. I find your lack of faith truly disturbing.

Pfff... While many in the 501st/Rebel Legion are good people...they have a LOT of self serving elitist assholes. From a solid core they have expanded into the frat douches of fandom. Some do charity... But most now are just attention whores who will show up in costume to the grand opening of a bag of potato chips.
You got armor? Good for you...you spend a couple thousand bucks of a costume.
Unless you're one of the guys collecting for he RedCross or Scottish Rite etc...who cares.

Stratohead: Scottish Rite

An Imperial Lodge? Now that could make for some interesting ritual...

Been part of one of the only moving Lodges a few times now, where we have our meeting on a train. It's usually pretty well-attended, as the ladies are welcome to come. They stay in the dinner car with an entertainer of some sort, while we adjourn to the next car for the meeting.

Seems to me like you didn't actually read the article. Nikki Finke, founder of DeadlineHollywood.com, is not the person complaining about the storm troopers on the show. She was reporting what someone had said to her. And the complaint isn't that the storm trooper cosplayers are doing charity work, helping the family on the show; it's a mistaken belief that now that Disney owns Star Wars, they are inserting Star Wars characters into their other properties, like ABC's Home Makeover show.
It's like someone saw the Photoshop contest thread and really believed the new Death Star would have mouse ears.

And why not? Hell, TV shows should be our primary source of helping the downtrodden.  They get what they need and we get to feel like we're actually helping by staring passively at a flickering box. Everybody wins!

I was taking exception to the wording that claimed that these people were somehow deserving of the huge benefit they get. But as you say, it's not about deserving but about charity. I've got no problem with that. In fact, that's a pretty cool thing.

But once you start saying that people deserve something, that resolves them of gratitude, and we need more gratitude and feelings of indebtedness rather than less.

The bum who spits on someone who walks by ignoring his begging has no gratitude. He has no concept of receiving charity because somewhere along the line he got it into his fool head that he deserves the spare change of strangers.

Yes, but she's adding to the 'DIsney's going to destroy Star Wars' mentality. She's using the nerd-rage complaint to justify her own opinion, without doing the basic research needed to know what the 501st is, not to mention their long history of charity work and appearances. She's jumping to the same conclusions the rest of the rabid idiots are and propping up straw men so flimsy to support her argument, they'd qualify as GOP talking points in terms of quality,

To quote someone more level-headed (Randy Milholland via his webcomic Something*Positive): It'll be like Marvel all over again. Sure they'll whore it out some, but no more than Lucas ever did. If you want to hate Disney, I can give you a fark-ton of valid reasons, but this isn't one of 'em.

I just want to point out something for the troll of a fan mentioned in the article.
This episode of Extreme Home Makeover was teased on network television with footage from the show.....BEFORE Disney got the rights for Star Wars.
For the slow people in the crowd (of which I include myself), that means the show was filmed BEFORE Disney could use their power over the Force and anyone with the mitochondria to use said Force.

You make some good points. "Deserve" is a tricky word.

Though I was kidding about charity being our primary tactic in helping the poor.
