I just finished writing my dissertation on electrospinning, so I'm really getting a kick...

seriously, it's because of cost. A 3D printer that can make nano-microscale features with surface to volume ratios comparable to electrospinning will cost $20k+ and take hours to make details that fine. A basic electrospinning device can run you a few hundred bucks and if you know what you're doing, you can get controllable microstructures and a fully formed construct like the one in TFA in about a half hour, give or take.

Subby's gotta be trolling. I mean, a contraceptive that is placed in the place where conception starts? This is shocking?

Was expecting a nasal cavity or perhaps actually in the male urethra. Those would be far more oddball (though the second one would also make sense). My question would be if it's appropriate for HIV protection during anal. Obviously not when it's in the vag. I don't see a reason why it shouldn't.

I'm wondering where a condom wouldn't be appropriate where this would be. When the guy refuses to wear one? If that's the case, I'd suggest finding a new partner who actually cares about you rather than a new type of female condom.

Not just advertisers. Watch a Marx Brothers movie sometimes. Double entrendre abounds. Mostly it's subtle or quick so you have to listen carefully, but sometimes it's not all that subtle.

Sweet. What can you do with electrospun materials?

Electrospinning was developed in the textile industry, of all places. And it has a few applications in making high performance clothes. It's big in the filtration literature too. But in the last decade it has exploded in tissue engineering research. When I started, most people that I talked to hadn't heard of it. But now, practically every university with a bioengineering department has at least one lab that does electrospinning. The fiber size seems to encourage cells to attach, and the high surface area helps with drug delivery.
