Of course, now that he's in prison -he may sample the best that prison life has to offer.

Life sentence for cutting beards seems harsh. Still he's OG in the most traditional way.

Really? That's all they mentioned. What else did the do? Wear buttons?

There seems to be allegations of sexual harassment- but people were allowed to leave.

I bet those Amish guys are bad mofo's in prison. They worked with hand tools all their lives and made everything they own. They could probably make the best damned shiv ever seen in max-sec.

Dammit, I'm in the wrong line of work.

By the way, have I mentioned that an archangel with a long blond beard talk to me last night and told me to start a new religion? But first I have to buy a place for the religion to meet, so I'm taking up a collection. Only people who send me money will be told what our secret doctrine is.

Yeah, that's the ticket.

Already he had stood up to a posse of tough guys in the cafeteria, befriended a feared murderer, protected a gay inmate and charmed the thugs and gang members in his cellblock by singing traditional Amish hymns after lights-out.

Subby might want to read the article. Mullet seems to be doing alright.

How does an Amish guy explain the hand truck, plastic lawn chair, baby stroller made of plastic, and custom boots he's wearing in the picture?

So welding is ok? How?
So factory built stuff is ok? How?

Some rules, just not all of them?

I suspect it's not electric-arc welding.

FTA: "We're not denying we cut hair. And I'm not saying it was right or wrong," he said. "But being here in jail - well, it looks wrong. Let's suppose that God has done this for a reason. Nobody realized when the guys went that it would be looked at this seriously. Nobody would have done anything if we knew it would become a serious case."
...
"Because he had that control, he could separate husbands and wives, and with the husband's consent, he would take these married women into his home and he would be sexually intimate with them for what he called religious reasons," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Bridget Brennan at trial.

With his male followers, Mullet employed strange and harsh disciplinary techniques including paddlings and forced imprisonment for days at a time in an empty chicken coop - a period during which some of the men's wives might expect special hands-on attention from the bishop.

In other news, religious extremist surprised that multiple acts of illegal entry, assault, illegal imprisonment, and sexual assault would put him in prison, because his religious extremism somehow justified those acts.

Fark him. You're welcome to your belief system - but the second you think it's OK to harm others because of your belief system, well, you're on your way to a hate crime.

According to the article, OG (Old Gangsta) can stare even harden prisoners into backing down. Seems he's actually sorta of fitting in, even if he thinks perhaps he's landed on another planet.

I want to feel sorry for him, but at the same time if everything they say about him is true, he's pretty much a total mean ass bastard and perhaps karma caught up with him more than the law.

It's illegal to cut beards? Even after no-shave November?

Was it just me, or was the article a series of 1 or 2 sentence 'paragraphs' restricted to 300 pixels for no reason, with all the images clipped?

Oh well, amish, just like all religious extremists, are prone to a type of crazy that's detrimental to society and individuals.

The Amish don't have a religious proscription against using any technological advancement, they just try to adopt a "wait-and-see" approach to new technologies to weigh their downsides before making them an indispensable part of their lives. A number of Amish communities even use (non-Internet-connected) computers for technical design tasks while avoiding having them in the home.

The beard cutters were guilty of assault, but damn these ridiculous hate crime charges that have increased the sentence to ridiculous levels. I cannot stand hate crime legislation as the grounds for prosecuting it seem to keep getting broader and broader. The beard shaving deserves severe punishment, but life in prison? 17 years in prison? There are people who beat children to death who receive lighter sentences.

Amish guys can throw down. Years ago I saw a teenage country-thug assault an Amish kid (16 yrs old maybe) at the fair in New Market PA. The Amish kid hung back for a sec, took a couple punches and then HULK SMASHed the country thug. The police broke it up and arrested them both, with the Amish kid pleading "But... he hit me!". I often wonder what happened to that kid. I cannot imagine the cops would have cited him but what do I know?

There's a lot of exceptions. Notice his daughter is wearing modern eyeglasses, which are surely manufactured with all sorts of technology they aren't allowed to use themselves.

\I imagine plenty of Amish manufacture custom boots, though.

Did you even read the article? He was locking his male followers in a chicken coop for days on end and bringing their wives into his house for "sexual counseling" sessions. This is cult like behavior.

This. Generations of inbreeding and manual labor have made Amish people retard strong. I bet there's some sort of sweet Amish martial art that we don't even know about. Butter Churn Do or something.

Missed that whole "beating husbands, sexually assaulting wives, imprisoning followers" part, eh? He's looking at a whole slew of charges, not just "beard cutting." And, yes, given that the "beard cutting" involved organizing multiple instances of illegal entry and assault on both men and women, using his followers as muscle and his interpretation of an already-strict religious extremism as justification, the "hate crime" add-ons are well justified.

Here's an experiment - pull "Amish", replace it with "Islamic", pull "beard cutting", replace it with "hair cutting", and let's see how thrilled you are about an Islamic leader whose followers broke into homes, held people down, and shaved the heads of women to humiliate them because they didn't agree with his belief system - the same leader that beat and imprisoned his male followers while sleeping with their wives as "counseling." Sounds like a hate crime there, doesn't it?

The religious sect shouldn't make a difference. Not one whit. An Amish thug is still a thug.

Also, each elder has a different interpretation of the Bible. For example, some 'Old Order Amish' communities in SE PA have rules against curtains, rubber tires, gasoline engines, photographs, etc. But in the Ohio Amish communities, it's not uncommon for the Amish to be just as modern as any "English".
