JackieRabbit: dv-ous: I got the flu shot, my housemate didn't. A bunch of people were our sick at work this week, and my housemate is at home on the toilet, crapping out mucous.

So I'm getting a kick out of this thread. Also, I feel great!

Your housemate does not have the flu. Influenza is an upper respiratory illness, not a gastrointestinal infection. You use the term housemate, so perhaps you're a Briton? If so, then in all probability, he/she has rotavirus, since that is something of an epidemic in England just now.

I'd like to add that we vaccinate for rotavirus in the US routinely. Does this mean we've got a leg-up on the Brits in both the teeth and diarrhea department?

Millennium: Here it is. Somehow I'd missed all this the first time around.

Long story short: a thread on the Duggars losing a baby brings down the standard Fark-hate. Posts come in from an incensed Farker whose wife had lost a baby a few years ago, including a picture of the small memorial shadow-box (which contains, among other things, the remains). This post is confirmed real, and an unusually mean-spirited meme, even for Fark, is born.

...and I officially regret giving the troll a 9/10, knowing what I know now. Leave that meme in the past.

Oh God. I had no idea that was real. I won't be touching that one.

Okay, somebody help me out here, 'cuz I'm not getting it.

WHY are people opposed to vaccines? And by "people" I'm not really asking about the sheepers who see something a celebrity said on the internet or a politician lies about during a speech and just fire up without actually fact-checking. Those people are always there, and they're nothing if not predictable.

What's behind the movement? Somewhere, someone HAS to know that they're making this crap up. What is the purpose? Is there a purpose? It doesn't make any sense!

Well then, once you've excluded that group, there's really nobody opposed to vaccines left, so...

Seriously though, I have heard the argument put forth that because vaccines have all but stamped out certain diseases, the risk of side effects is supposedly higher than the risk of not being vaccinated, so it's safer for the child to avoid the vaccine than to get it, despite the fact that not getting it increases the risk of actually needing it.

/ Yeah, I know. It sounds dumb when you just spell it out like that. It needs to be coming from an emotional, overprotective suburban mother who insists that you, as a childless man, just can't understand.

Autism: the role of cholesterol in treatment.

Cholesterol is essential for neuroactive steroid production, growth of myelin membranes, and normal embryonic and fetal development. It also modulates the oxytocin receptor, ligand activity and G-protein coupling of the serotonin-1A receptor. A deficit of cholesterol may perturb these biological mechanisms and thereby contribute to autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), as observed in Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome (SLOS) and some subjects with ASDs in the Autism Genetic Resource Exchange (AGRE).

Maybe the skyrocketing rate of autism coincides with the rate of pregnant mothers eating low cholesterol diets?

Yeah, in my experience, this is mainly a phenomenon of left-leaning Whole Foods-type soccer moms, with right-leaning homeschooler conspiracy theorists trailing way behind. I've read in several places that the Bay Area is the epicenter of it.

It's not really partisan stupidity, it's just stupidity.

I think it depends on the location. Here in the south, the stupidity lies in the rightwing homeschoolers.

So why did Congress hold hearings this week promoting crackpot antivax views?

Simple VOTES. Those politicians are smart enough to know to trust the scientists, and they probably believe them, but the scummy bastards will LIE because they really want the votes of of STUPID PEOPLE.

They don't give two shiats about children dying painfully of easily preventable diseases. The selfish bastards just want those obedient Oprah-watching herps and derps to go to the voting booth and push THEIR button, so that can sit in that comfortable chamber and collect all that PAC money, salary and pensions. And then get a cushy job when they retire.

Utterly contemptible scum.

The first antivaxers are dead, most likely; it's hard to remember sometimes that vaccines have been around for over 200 years.

This presents a problem, because the originators of the modern form of the antivax movement likely aren't just making this crap up. The ones who did that were their forebears: what the modern antivaxers are guilty of is confirmation bias, not wholesale fabrication. This is unfortunate, because it means you can't just expose them as frauds: they actually don't know they're wrong. Instead you have to disprove the hypothesis, which is a much harder task.

I watched the hearings on CSPAN. Kucinich was not leading the Derpmobile. The myths that he stated are easily disproven. Well, this guy won because he's got an R next to his name and his district is probably pretty red from years of gerrymandering.

Kucinich was elected year after year because he had a D next to his name and his district was in deep Blue urban setting until his district was gerrymandered out of existence.

Actual positions don't matter so much as the letter next to your name and the district you are running in.

We did. Lots of safety features on cars these days.

Vaccines are like the airbags, seat belts, and crumple zones of your body's defense system. They won't stop you from dying if it is a severe enough incident, but on average, you'll be ok.
