Not hardly the first time Timmysprinkles has done something like this and surely not the last.

Besides, it's not like he's so busy he can't spare time for a phone call these days.

HATE TEBOW

Hate? Really? All the media hype can be annoying at times, but how can anyone really HATE the guy?

2012-12-04 11:53:04 AM
"Really nice guy" would be a better tag than "hero." How hard is it to pick up a phone? Don't get me wrong, I think Tebow is a pretty great guy (if lackluster player), but why do we throw around the hero tag so cavalierly?

Mark Ratner: Hate? Really? All the media hype can be annoying at times, but how can anyone really HATE the guy?

Very much this. The media hype would be fine if the player behind it merited it. It's the same reason so many people were annoyed by the Cowboys a few years back - tons of coverage for an average team while superior teams were largely ignored. ESPN had toilet cams in order to analyze Tony Romo's dumps.

I think people confuse their Tebow hate with their disgust with the sporting press. Because Tebow seems like an awfully nice guy.

I think Steeler fans hate him for the one time he actually threw a pass.

He used a phone? To make a phone call?! He's a true hero.

2012-12-04 11:57:31 AM
I find it really annoying that once you become rich and/or famous taking 5 minutes to call someone makes you a "hero". Or even in much bigger cases like when Christian Bale visited those victims in Denver. Big deal. He has money falling out of his butt, he can call a private jet a fly to Japan at a moment's notice if he wants.

It's still very nice of them to do things like this, but I think calling them "heroes" is a bit much. It's all relative. Why are our standards so low when it comes to celebrities? Is it because we expect them all to be narcissistic a-holes, so when one of them isn't it's a huge deal?

A professional football player made a phone call - WHAT AN AMAZING HUMAN BEING!!!

When was the last time you called a stranger to support them in their time of need?

2012-12-04 12:00:54 PM
I stopped hating Tebow after his "mic'd up" game. After he gets leveled by Urlacher, gets off the turf and says "Nice hit, Brian!" Then goes over to the sideline and inspires some teammates. He's a good kid, but he's not a good QB. I'm ok with that.

2012-12-04 12:01:52 PM
The act of making the phone call clearly isn't the heroic part. Lifting someone's spirits who lost his best friend and girlfriend is. In the eyes of that kid, he is a hero. No need to douche all over his parade.

Like the majority of people in this thread are saying, it's cool, he didn't have to do it, etc. - but it's short of "hero" status. I've never called a stranger to support them in their time of need because I'm a stranger and they'd probably hang up on me, and maybe become even more distressed (who is this random guy on the phone and is he trying to sell me something?).

This. I'm a non-Steelers fan living in Steelers country. The amount of irrational hate for Tim Tebow all boils down to that throw. To this day I hear empty threats of knifing Tebow in the street if he were to ever visit town. Because of that one throw.

And Pittsburgh is supposed to be a defensive team.

He's never been a bad guy. Always a class act & a hero to many.
Hate the ESPN shills that won't shut up about him and spend every day in world-class facilities with access to all the tools to analyze the best athletic performances but can't figure out that this guy is terrible at NFL football.

Fark Hero Tag: Serious Business.

Is there some sort of added extra benefit the recipient of the hero tag gets?

Of course - I just think it's funny that people are so quick to discount anything athletes do - whether it's something like this or visiting hospitals, because it's part of a PR thing, when the majority of people probably don't even do as much as that. So it's kinda funny when people who do even less than your average athlete does gets upset about credit given to athletes for doing little things like this.

Basically, this.

Oh, and in Christian Bale's case, there was absolutely no reason for him to have to take time out of his life, fly somewhere to meet strangers, and make them feel better. So what if he has money? That was some really obnoxious pandering and strongarming by those people that basically made him look like a dick if he didn't go, though.

/but ummmm I was injured while watching Alison Brie sing Santa Baby, so if anyone wants to start a viral campaign to make her come to my place and have sex with me, that'd be great

Maybe the recipient of the hero tag gets a room full of virgins. Not that Tebow would take advantage, but still. What a waste of virgins.

bionicjoe: can't figure out that this guy is terrible at NFL football.

It's weird that he's SO TERRIBLE yet was able to go 9-5 quarterbacking a squad that was 4-15 with Kyle Orton, who is pretty much universally acknowledged as "adequate." If he was so terrible, then why was his team able to win despite nothing but failure at the most important position on the field?

Look, he's not worth all the attention he gets and he's not good, but the criticism goes far beyond anything reasonable.

/at least let him QB the Jets, then he can get Skeltonized and prove he's not good
//and if he miracles wins for them, well, you might just have to acknowledge that there's something that supersedes stats.

I'm not commenting about the extent of the injuries until I see Alison Brie at my door. Mostly because if I make them not very severe, then I'm unlikely to generate the sympathy required to mount the campaign, but if I make them too severe then she is going to know it's all a lie before I get to bone her.

2012-12-04 12:22:41 PM
Tebow does this shiat all the time. He takes sick kids to every game and hangs out with them before and after the game.

He is a shiatty QB, but at least he practices what he preaches and is a hell of a guy off the field.

So, is Tebow going to start or play this weekend? Is he even being considered for the start? Is he even gonna suit up? Because if he suits up and isn't starting, you very well might see the home crowd chanting for the opposing teams backup QB to be put in the game and that would be hilarious.

Tebow is a nice man who spends alot of time and energy trying to help people. He is also a bad pro QB, who should not have have been drafted as high as he was.

Whoa whoa whoa, you only get personal visits if your injury was caused while watching something the person was involved in. Random injuries/tragedies only net you a phone call. Get with the program.

He's a hero in the same sense that every single person who served in any branch of the military is a "hero."

Humvee mechanic stationed in Germany for 6 years then discharged: not hero, sorry.

For me, I don't really find myself bothered by Tebow as a football player. Put him in there, or not, it makes no difference to me. That said, he seems like a very stand-up guy. Like one commentator said, I wouldn't want him to be my starting QB, but I would want him to be a role model for my kids.

I hate ESPN and the AP, mainly for the obscene media-mongering that has earned them a level of respect just shy of Perez Hilton and the National Enquirer. Aside from the overblown media coverage Tebow never actually asked for, what did he do that people hate so much?

I thought everyone hated him for that one pro-life superbowl commercial. I didn't realize that it's just because sports media likes to talk about him.

It was a nice thing to do, but I can't help but wonder if the kid was nonplussed by a phone call from a third-stringer.

For the 'HERO tag isn't deserved, how hard is it to pick up a phone' crowd:

We don't call him a hero because of what he did. That was routine. We call him a hero for bucking the very selfish trends common to a very selfish profession, and for doing so in a quiet, human way. We call him a hero in the hopes that he will inspire more of his peers to act in the same way.

Or to put it another way: compared to this guy, what he did isn't heroic in the slightest, but compared to, say, Pac-Man Jones, Plaxico Burress, Michael Vick, Mark Chmura, or a whole slew of other self-indulgent and criminal assholes in the NFL, he's a freaking saint.

Positive reinforcement works a LOT better than hate, so I'm all for the HERO tag here. Even though I kind of think he's a bit schmaltzy, naive, and over the top about his religion.

2012-12-04 01:58:49 PM
I've said it before and I'll say it again. The reason people hate on Tebow isn't because undeniably a crappy quarterback, it is because he is undeniably a genuinely nice guy. We want our crappy quarterbacks to be pretentious douche bags or date rapists or something.

My prediction: Traded to the Jags. Four years of suffering for those fans, who love him anyway. Mayor of Jacksonville for a while, retires with hawt church wife to preach the gospel, with the occasional trip to the booth for very nice analysis and commentary.
