Top Republicans tell us Ryan tried to push his ideas for a more creative "war on poverty"

By which he means carpet bombing poor neighborhoods.

Why do they keep whoring out Rubio? I understand he's the Republican party token Hispanic, but can't they find members of other minorities among their party to exploit?

I will accept Paul Ryan's makeover if it comes in the form of a highly apologetic suicide note.

I like the metaphor. Makeovers are cosmetic...surface and appearance. And that's all we'll get.

Marco Rubio doesn't want to be the "Hispanic candidate." Paul Ryan doesn't want to be the "austerity guy."

Because they both suck terribly at it?

Right after the election, a Republican "strategist" was being interviewed, and lamented the blowout loss among Hispanic voters. Then, he added something like, "but at least we got Rubio. If we can get him out there, they'll vote for us!"

You know, with how dry Pelosi probably is, Ryan may go straight for the pooper, given the opportunity.

Jon Huntsman is only man capable enough to bring credibility back to the party. He can intellecually discuss the important issues this country faces. Rubio can bring a new angle, but he still isnt presidential material.

Paul Ryan must not have the ability to read social situations if he thinks he is likable in any way shape or form. That guy will never win a primary let alone an actual election for President. If you are thinking about donating or backing Paul Ryan in the future you'd be better off just buying scratch tickets.

And ignore everything else, including race-baiting ignorant white people to think that all Hispanic people are illegal immigrants. I'm sure that won't affect anybody at all.

Arizona has assured that the Hispanic vote will go Democratic for a few cycles at least, unless Sheriff Joe and most of the government there is arrested and imprisoned.

didn't rubio's parents leave cuba 2 years before the revolution? and since he doesn't note that part but still tries to take advantage of the cuban exile thing, doesn't that make him a poison pill?

Its easier to find a right-wing Cuban than any other minority.

How does anyone even look at Paul Ryan without breaking out into fits of hysterical laughter?

I suggest dressing in warm colors for Rubio. And a nice smoky purple eyeliner will do wonders to bring out Ryan's brown eyes.

I kind of like the makeover. (In a Bugs Bunny dressed up like a woman gave Garth a boner kind-of-way) Rupaul Ryan is not damaged goods. She can run in a political drag race, again and again. You should see her times.

Picking Rubio as your token Hispanic is going to backfire among 'real' Hispanics, because it's hard to imagine a less popular brand of Hispanic than a white Cubano Republican. Mexican Americans outnumber Cuban Americans by nearly 20:1. Heck, Puerto Ricans outnumber Cubans by 3:1...and neither PRs nor Mexicans "like" Cubanos...especially white ones.

Go ahead, GOP, hang your hat on Rubio. That's another sure-fire way to lose the WH again.

I have an aunt and uncle who live in WI and think the guy is amazing but then when questioned on what that means it quickly boils down to he was the GOP choice so he must be precious.

I see the GOP thinks being Cuban will get you votes from Mexicans.

It doesn't. Hell, it only gets you 50% of the Cuban vote - the old Batista-supporting vote.

Yep, from the days when Havana made Las Vegas look like Salt Lake City. It was a completely different Cuba back then, although I've heard from Canadian vacationers that it really isn't all that bad now.

They simply don't have any other horses in the stable, whether we're talking Hispanics, blacks, or women. Bachmann and Palin are punchlines, Colin Powell is all but exiled, Condoleeza Rice prefers the private sector, and it's becoming pretty clear (at least from his Daily Show segments) that Herman Cain was simply an entertainer who trolled the crap out of the entire US political arena. Seriously - it looks like he took his presidential bid about as seriously as Stephen Colbert did his own candidacy.

If by 'no other horses' you mean of the minority type, I concede the point. That said, the GOP have several serious non-minority candidates-in-waiting...Govs Daniels, Christie and McDonnell among them. These guys are not about to let an uncontested POTUS seat go to an unpopular minority without a struggle. Not to mention nobody has polled the GOP base to see how they feel about voting for one of them 'Messicans'.

To me, Rubio may think he's laying the ground work for a run for the top spot, but if so I think he's fooling himself. The GOP of 2016 is not the DNC of 2008, so if he's serious about his career, I suspect he's instead laying the groundwork to claim the VP slot. He's the perfect guy for it for the reasons you articulate, and since I'll be surprised if the GOP doesn't have a minority on the ticket, I expect to see his name in lights for years to come.

I don't understand why Republicans are still pushing Ryan on the public at the national level. The electorate were presented Ryan, they saw his ideas and they rejected him. Pushing Ryan now is like pushing Palin 4 years ago. Look how well that turned out for ya.
