Tuesday (all matches at 2:45 ET)
Borussia Dortmund - Manchester City

Dinamo Zagreb - Dynamo Kiev

Paris Saint Germain - FC Porto

Montpellier - Schalke

Olypiakos - Arsenal

AC Milan - Zenit St Petersburg

Malaga - Anderlecht

Real Madrid - Ajax

Wednesday (all at 2:45 ET)

Bayern M - Bate Borisov

Chelsea - FC Nodsjaelland

Shakhtar - Juventus (Juventus is fighting for a win, in this very close group with Shakhtar up by 1 point and Chelsae only below them by 2.)

Lille - Valencia

Barcelona - Benfica (With Barcelona winning the group, Benfica and Celtic are even in the race for the second place entry to the round of 16. Spartak has already been eliminated. Will this be the win that Celtic need?)

Celtic - Spartak Moscow

Braga - Glatasaray (Man United winning the group, Galatasaray and Cluj are even at 7 with Braga already eliminated. Similar to the group above, will Glatasaray get a boost with an easier match?)

Man United - Cluj Napoca

The games I'm most interested in from today's set:

Olympiakos v. Arsenal (of course)
PSG v Porto
Real v Ajax

Langston: marius2, Bayern was looking really good a couple weeks ago. Are they still on a tear?

They just came off a draw with their biggest rival Borussia Dortmund which I think will add to their confidence and it shows that they're definitely the power in Germany right now, so I think they're going to keep wrecking stuff in both the Bundesliga and Champions League. However, I'm not certain which "team" is going to play against BATE this week. They've already secured a place in the round of 16 so they have to decide whether they will benefit from being the winners or the runner's up. Valencia is almost certainly guaranteed to beat Lille (and by a great amount) so Bayern must either

A) put their best team out there and try and crush BATE, which would make up for their major upset loss against them in the first set of games.

B) put their second squad out there and give them some playing time which will still likely result in a win, but not the kind that could keep up with Valencia's predicted goal difference against Lille.

Whenever we see the starting line up we'll know what the coach wants out of this. Part of me would be okay with the runner up spot, since we'd then avoid the group of death in at least the first round since Borussia won that one and we can't play against them in the first round since it's also a German team (unless I'm mistaken/forgetting how the Champions League draw works for this.)

First instinct would be to say Man City vs Dortmund, however this is not necessarily the truth since City have been eliminated and in serious fashion. This tournament has been full of surprise winners and the major games have been pretty bland in my opinion.

But considering that almost all of today's matches are in the same boat, where the people playing are already either eliminated or in the round of 16 and I don't believe any two teams fighting for first or second place are actually against each other today, then most of the matches could be boring and bland. Though I've also seen many matches were a team had already been eliminated and went to play harder than they ever had before. So who knows.

Long story short, I'd still go with Man City vs Dortmund. I

I don't believe there's a set opponent for each position. I think the only rules are that group winners don't face each other in the 1st round and teams from the same country can't face each other yet.

Bayern are still more or less ripping up the Bundesliga at the moment with an 11 point lead. Unless they suffer a massive melt down, the Bundesliga is essentially all over.

I have admit, I have been impressed with Bayern's mentality this season. They are getting more than a few scrappy 1-0 wins, which at first bugged me a lot. I realized a few days ago that last season, these are all games that they would have lost. They are getting back to "German mentality."

I'm still watching Milan and Zenit of course, the Russians need a win to be safely into the Europa cash cow, so it should be good

8 point lead ;) Leverkusen snuck their way in there when no one was noticing. But yes, it's great to see the changes they've made this season

I checked for the EL round of 32 today (relax, I have a dog in it) and two teams from the same association cannot be drawn vs each other. I would assume the CL round of 16 works the same since the draws for both are next week - didn't Arsenal face Man U in the round of 8 (quarterfinals) a few years back?

Correct, they won't be allowed to face each other until the QF.

Well, eliminated, but with a chance for the EL where they have been for the last 3-4 years. You would think they would get one one of these times...

Whoops. Right, eight points. Still, hard to imagine Bayern giving up that kind of lead, especially if Dortmund want to make a deep run in the Champions League this year. (Which I assume they do.)

Spent time searching, so I might as well post

Knockout phase
From the last 16 until the semi-finals, clubs play two matches against each other on a home-and-away basis with the same rules as the qualifying and play-off rounds applied. In the last 16, group winners play runners-up other than teams from their own pool or nation, while from the quarter-finals on the draw is free.

But I guess for most of you, I should explain the qualifying and play-off round rules :p

Milan 0 - 1 Zenit

I'd say Pazzini should have gotten a penalty kick in the fourth or so minute but I'm biased towards Milan so that may be part of my thoughts on that. However, it did look like the Zenit player just went over his back for no reason and didn't even get the ball.

Flipped over, we will see... :)

I made the comment earlier this year about the San Siro being so empty - same case tonight. Next year I might as well book a holiday in Milan some match day and just stand out front for tickets.

I would say to truly get the atmosphere you have to sit in the Curva Sud, but if you're rooting for one of those eastern European teams it's probably a bad idea...

Understood. I was thinking more along the lines of getting getting tickets to an Anderlecht or Zenit (3,4 seed match) as a neutral fan. Seems fairly easy.

I don't do the away fan thing anyway. That's a whole different ballgame

So much for the another goal in it angle, good game though.

If you do that, while in Milan I have one more piece of advice, wait in line early for the first come first serve seats at La Scala too. It's called Il loggione and it's standing room only, it's like the Ultras of opera up there in the neatest house in the world, definitely something to try once in your life if there

I'm pretty sure that I've heard several times during both this season's Champions- and Euro-League coverage on German TV that, like during Euro 2012, the direct comparison is the first tie breaker if teams are tied on points (or rather, as there can be more than two teams tied on points, "the table that you get if you only take the games between tied teams into account" ).
I'm also pretty sure I googled this the first time it was mentioned on TV.
And it kinda makes sense that the UEFA adopted those tie-breaking rules not just for the Euro.

Makes sense.

Also: I might not be able to watch the match today. My 3:30 meeting is currently scheduled as "maybe.." :S

i'm gonna have to jump on the celtic bandwagon for today. thank god for fox soccer to go. although, watching six hours of footy yesterday was a drain.

Yep. I'm gonna miss it. Gotta leave in a few minutes. Hope this meeting isn't a complete waste of my time like I think it will be.

I'm hoping for a Celtic win myself, couldn't care less about the other matches except for Bayern's and I'm not sure how I want them to come out of it to be honest.

2012-12-05 02:27:13 PM
Chelsea? Celtic? Man U? I hate being able to watch only one match.
