Like this won't be a financial sinkhole for Amdam. Brings in little tax revenue, and has a high cost of maintaining through law enforcement... gosh, it sounds a lot like the USA.

This, essentially, makes being a jackass a criminal offense. While I can see and sympathize with such an approach, the slippery slope is quite steep. If this deterrent does not actually deter, you have a permanent underclass. I'm all right with the idea that if you are getting free housing and are a jerkoff to your neighbors, you can be forced to move. Since the government is your landlord, they can do whatever the fark they feel like doing. You'd have to set up a new court for that kind of thing, but if that's where you want to spend your money, that's up to the Dutch.

uttertosh: Y'know how I know you have never come acros anyone antisocial evar? Because I have. A tv being left on one night, no worries. Awhole week, shiat, who hasn't? 24/7 2 years straight, plus parties, wifebeating, threats to my safety. None of which the cops could do annything about? Yeah, I went right ahead and moved to the country like a damned chicken. When it's the apartment above your oneroomer, and you're on nightshift, you really have no option, do ya? Go raise some chickens. Like the little douchefag you are, uttertosh, right?

I never accused you of being a 'douchefag' whatever that is supposed to be. I also never told you to move into the country and raise chickens. I will add though that being on night shift is a real pain but you cannot expect low levels of noise during the day and if you are unable to sleep during the day be it due to a noisy living environment then that is strictly speak your problem.

When I was on night shift I was pretty miserable due to children running around in the apartment above me. I'm talking constant running barefoot right above my ceiling. I moved the bedroom into where my office was as it was the least noisy room in my apartment and brought some ear plugs home with me from work. Problem solved.

If you are talking about nighttime noise then call the building supervisor. If you are talking about spousal abuse, call the police. Threats to your safety? Police. This isn't rocket science and I simply don't believe that the police wouldn't come running if you called them due to someone beating their wife. The cops love spousal abuse, it's the best part of their night, it's free entertainment.

Sure. It's still popular with tourists who for some reason want to go and watch smelly hippies.

You can also purchase hash freely.

Went there last year - and yes, it is very easy to buy cheap weed. Also beers were only 7kr @ the local bar, which was super cheap (about 1.50$).

Millennium: And that's why I can't go along with a system like this. It creates, essentially, a parallel system of ill-defined laws which can -and, therefore, will- be used arbitrarily. That's wrong, and because it's wrong, it should be avoided.

You have a point, but even the "real" laws are made and enforced pretty arbitrarily.

AngryDesertDweller: I used to live next to renters who were "guest workers" from south of the border. 12-15 bodies in a 900 sq ft house with one bathroom, the place ran 24/7 . The worst was the blasting of that god awful polka music at 2AM right by my bedroom wall. Thank god the homeowner lost the house (pocketed the rent money) and split.

I live next door to renters who are "guest workers" from south of the border. They have been there six years. They have horses, goats, chickens and dogs; also four kids. They are up at 5:30am, and return at sundown. On the weekends, they have family parties, and everyone plays music and the men get together and build something. A concrete and brick driveway, an ornate wall to replace the chain link fence, a portico so they don't have to get out of their vehicles in the rain. They started with a single-wide mobile home, and now have the nicest home in the neighborhood. Their kids are polite and hardworking, both in school and at home.

It took me a long time, but I finally found something I could hate 'em for, too. Their Christmas lights are too bright, so maybe I'll complain and get them thrown out of the country, so a meth chemist can move in next door. Yay, Arizona.

fyrewede: Millennium:

Personally, I'm horrified by this. Being a jerk should not be a crime.

I think that's oversimplifying it a bit. This is behavior that goes beyond "being a jerk" and, to quote TFA, "reflects hardening attitudes to routine anti-social behaviour that falls short of criminality."

If you've ever lived with someone with a personality disorder (especially anti-social PD), you'll have some grasp of what a nightmare that can be, even if physical violence never occurs.

Working 5+ years in Corrections gave me a much more realistic grasp of just what types of people can change, and how much (or in some cases, how little) certain types of people can change.

Those with personality disorders frequently require *years* of therapy, and even if they commit to that and acknowledge that they need to change, there is no guarantee they won't backslide and no guarantee they won't get worse.

I actually kind of agree that those who are polite, kind, help others, and try to get along with our neighbors should not have to be endlessly at the mercy of those whose sole concern is themselves and getting their own wants and needs gratified, regardless of the impact to others. I'm just not sure this is the answer (as appealing as it sounds at first glance).

The problem is they're not all walking around with "A--hole!" or "Potential Serial Killer" tattooed on their foreheads either. Some of them are what we call high-functioning sociopaths -- they blend in nicely because they're good at putting on the appearance of propriety and covering their arses. These people often make it to the top of corporate ranks because they don't care who they step on to get there.

The main reason this proposition is likely doomed to failure is that it would either have to discriminate against people who don't have young children, or risk subjecting the innocent children of rude/manipulative/deceptive parents to a life surrounded by dysfunctional people.

I also have a life-sized picture of Soc ...

Egoy3k: liam76: Egoy3k: This is a monumentally stupid idea.

Not as monumentally stupid as paying for peopel to be shiatty neighbors and harrass people in their neighborhood.

I live in an apartment building. I have asshole neighbors so you can be assured that I know what it's like to live near assholes. It's still a bad idea to concentrate these people. Sure it looks fine on paper but these people have children (usually too many of them) and those children are going to be living in these 'scum villages' too. Why should children be made to suffer inhumane treatment because their parents are assholes? It won't break the cycle of poverty and stupidity if anything it will increase the likelihood that children will fall into the same patterns of behavior that got their parents into the villages in the first place. Any measures taken to deal with this sort of behavior should have an ultimate goal of reducing the need for such measures. This seems like a step in the wrong direction.

What should happen is that we should all stop being pushovers for this sort of thing. When people behave improperly call them on it, if that fails report them to your landlord, or call the police when necessary. I've personally dealt with many issues in my current situation and never felt the need to mention it to my landlord or the police. Most of the time all it takes is an explanation that they behavior is inconveniencing others.

If you've been able to solve the problems like that, you've only ever had to deal with diet assholes, not the full-fat version.

What sorts of neighbors are they talking about moving? This article could be covering anything from people who would be in half-way houses here to people who have their music too loud. I don't think either is a particularly good idea, but the article should go into some detail. Would this include neighbors who have kids? I remember a story, I think out of New York City, where there was a psychotic homeless guy who would go around shoving people, but never quite hard enough to get arrested. Him? Hoarders? Animal hoarders? People who walk around naked with the blinds open (but not hotties!)? People with Asperger's?

Eh, I'm not necessarily against this. We have a similar problem in New Zealand with problem families in state housing absolutely destroying the neighbourhood for other families. The problem people are often gang-affiliated causing intimidation (implied and actual direct threats). They have a right to the state housing, but they are making a lot of other people miserable who equally have a right to the state housing, and the right to feel safe in their own homes. These types of people are generally criminals, abuse drugs and alcohol, abuse their kids, don't feed their kids or make sure they go to school, and terrorise the neighbourhood on top of it.

I would be absolutely okay with those pieces of excrement and their doomed bastard children being moved to a special suburb where they get intensive attention from social services and police. Mandatory drug and alcohol treatment, parenting classes, mandatory education or training, budgeting classes, cooking classes, children closely monitored and extra educational input, and they get taught how to act like civilised human beings in normal society. It's probably too late to save the useless adults but some of the kids can probably be stopped from turning into their parents.

The only problem I can see is the stigma attached to having an address in that suburb.

The thing about politics is that it's not really a spectrum: it's a circle. Take the left and right wings out far enough, and they meet up on the opposite end from moderate: "antimoderate", if you will, or perhaps just "narking futs." It can get really confusing, but it's how you get the occasional case of strange bedfellows.

Like the hard left and jihadis today

Eco-terrorists, Christian Abortion doctor killers, anti-WTO rioters, and Al-Qaeda-led rioters aren't really all that different, but they still aren't the tip of the circle. Just a little further along and you end up with death cults, conspiracy theorists, and the Time Cube guy, that jumble things from the right and left into a deranged blend.
