(Xombo)   For short run, component hook-up, no in the wall stuff, do I go with a 28 AWG non-braided with ferrite cores or do I go with braided CL2 or CL3 high-speed HDMI cables? Or just dump on me for having that terrible combination of anal and ignorance   (xombo.com ) divider line

Be sure to get the gold-plated HDMI cables. Those deliver the best ones and zeros.

Maybe you could make a jingle to support your case? Here's one I have permanently memorized from my late 90's job at Creative Labs:

So sad to say
So sorry to report
That the 2.0 does not have full duplex support
Maybe you could try one of our OPL-3s
And let us not forget AWE.

I can't believe I still remember that.

I'd stick with HDMI, because HDCP doesn't work on component outs, so you won't be getting any high def.

/Or did I completely misunderstand the question?

I've found in general that Amazon Basics cables are a great deal. High quality construction on the cheap.

I'd suggest knob and tube wiring. You know, the old retro look. It sounds warmer and the colors are more realistic.

This is a kinky personal ad, right?

I guess if the hook-up is competent I would be willing to overlook the "no in the wall stuff" if anal is on the menu. I'm not really inclined to "dump on you", but I can be flexible if it gets you there.

And are you using a line conditioner? The best wires in the world are going to look and sound like shiat if your incoming power is fed through shiatty lines.

This can help

I had to read the headline a few times (between "hookup" and "anal" my brain melted) before I realized he was talking about electrical stuff.

I advise, uh..., yeah, go with the anal.

I can vouch for the Amazon essentials cables. Very nice and they make a great optical audio cable as well

I find it handy that the worth of an item on Amazon is inversely proportional to the hilarity of its user reviews.

Anal? In that case stick the HDMI cable right up your ass.

Get a cheap one off of Amazon. That mono-thingee linked above looks nice too.

2012-12-04 05:16:53 AM
It doesn't matter as your audio will lack its necessary warm tones without a bag of magic rocks taped to each end of the cable and a special clock in the room set with proper feng shui to counterbalance the audiophile-grade powerpoint set in your wall.

But I poop from there!

I did a show for Monster Cable a few years ago. They demonstrated the bandwidth capabilities of short runs versus long runs of cheap cables and their cables. Essentially, if you use 3-6ft cables, you can go with the cheap stuff and the bandwidth is almost as good as the Monster. If you use greater lengths than 12ft, I would actually recommend the Monster cable or something similar.
I had an opportunity to speak to one of the engineers at Monster and he conceded that using short cheap cables would probably work fine, but for longer runs their (monster) cables are superior. They have gold soldering at the Molex connectors and a better shielding to help prevent reflection. Digital signals get tripped up easily at contact points (where resistance goes up). That is why you can use cheap cables for short distances. :-)

Newegg.com has Rosewill cables for 5 dollars. I have a few and only one gives me trouble. The rest work great.
