Reminds me of my halloween costume back in 2006. I took a real arrow shaft and made an "entry wound" with hotmelt that provided enough of a base I could superglue the whole thing to my forehead. Rest of it was makeup and fake blood, but the looks I got from other cars as I was driving to the club was well worth the trouble.

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) - Gravely wounded by an arrow fired into his head, a Wyoming college instructor still managed to wrestle with his 25-year-old son who carried out the attack and give his students time to flee the classroom, say police who hailed the actions as heroic.

More grisly details of the horrific murder-suicide in Wyoming came to light Saturday, a day after the younger man killed his father's live-in girlfriend and then barged into his father's computer science class and shot him in the head with a high-powered bow and arrow...

..Christopher Krumm had just stabbed to death 42-year-old Heidi Arnold at the home she shared with James Krumm two miles away.

When police arrived at the classroom, they found Christopher Krumm bleeding from self-inflicted knife wounds and taking his last breaths.

If only there were law preventing knives and bows&arrows from being sold to the mentally ill, this might have been avoided... tsk tsk...

Yeah. I'm hoping they were ignoring the police crime scene going on down the street, not the presence of a dead body in the gutter. I consider myself to be a pretty ambivelent individual, but I would have to act if I saw a dying/dead person laying in the gutter. At the very least, calling 911 and checking for a pulse will provide me with an afternoon's worth of entertainment, a reprieve from mundane daily activities, and a tale to regale my co-workers with.

[in response to satirical comments of the no-gun-control crowd]

say what you want, it's a lot easier for one guy to kill a bunch of people with an automatic firearm than with a bow, crossbow, knife, or whatever.

I'm fine with private citizens (who aren't proven crazy or repeat felons) owning handguns, rifles, and shotguns. I don't think any private citizen needs fully automatic assault rifles, machine guns, grenades, rocket launchers, or any other military-level weaponry.

semi-automatic/self-loading guns, that's a gray area ...

Republicans ain't good at critical thinking either, witness the "Obama is a commie Muslim" crap.

That's the real paradox, how we manage to have a country as nice as we do with all those Democrats & Republicans being so silly. You'd think with an electorate of idiots we'd be worse off. This could mean that voting is basically irrelevant to the power structure and that our Ruling Class ain't quite as bad as most of their "non-white" foreign counterparts. (Strictly speaking the Iranian are Aryan, the word Iran being Iranian for "land of the Aryans," but tell that to White American Wingnuts.)

America might be even nicer if our hoi polloi were better educated and had some stupidity bred out, but that would be too much trouble for our populace to go to. It's so much easier to be fat, stupid & lazy that our "thrones & dominions" don't have to try very hard to repress us. Why bother to keep us down when we never bother getting up? So they save the cruise missiles and drones for peoples with self-respect.

ISubmittedThisYesterdayWithAMuchFunnierHeadline: Why was a room full of college students escaping at all, instead of beating the ever-loving shiat of the guy that just shot their teacher with a single-shot weapon?

Well from TFA, the "room full of students" was only 6 computer science kids and the dude also had a knife that the police chief describes as "very large" which he used to kill at least one person at that point.

I know, ITG and all that, but if I'm sitting there with 5 other dorks with a pencil in my hand and some dude busts in, shoots the teacher with a crossbow and pulls out a Bowie knife I would think about excusing myself unless the assailant is clearly so tied up with the dad that you could grab it from his hand or something. But beating the ever-loving shiat out of someone with your barehands could be tough if they're stabbing you in the gut.

The One True TheDavid: So you have to be mentally deranged to kill anybody? That supports the pacifist argument that people have to be brainwashed into being soldiers, that inductees have to be purposefully mentally deranged in a militarily useful way.

It wouldn't be tough to argue that people don't kill except in mental states that are decidedly outside the norm. Some of those states are legitimate: for example, fear that you or a loved one is about to be killed or come to grievous bodily harm at the hands of that guy over there with the weapon. Other states, like "being mentally deranged," are another matter entirely.

Electromax: ISubmittedThisYesterdayWithAMuchFunnierHeadline: Why was a room full of college students escaping at all, instead of beating the ever-loving shiat of the guy that just shot their teacher with a single-shot weapon?

The students figured that once the teacher had been shot that class was dismissed. I mean really, whose gonna grade what you were working on?

Yeah, the article doesn't have this, but the psycho killed his dad around 9am, so she was dead before that, and found within a couple hours. This person got there after work and picking up her kid, so 3pm? Either her quote isn't complete or she just didn't say, but obviously there were police there and crime scene tape, and hopefully the body was covered. Anyway it's not that they didn't call it in, that would indeed be farked up.

2012-12-03 02:54:15 PM
You can't really blame the people who fled. For one thing, you know more about the situation than the students did - you know there was only one assailant, you know the assailant was the teacher's son there to execute a personal grudge (and not some random spree killer), and you know he wasn't also packing a gun. The students in the class couldn't know any of those things - for all they knew a second shooter was about to walk in the room with a shotgun or something. Plus, you don't have to deal with the surprise aspect of it - when most people are exposed to totally random and unexpected violence, there is going to be at least a few moments of shock and panic before they start to think rationally at all.

Babwa Wawa: Casper College. Really.

And WTF is a "high powered bow and arrow", anyway?

I took an archery class. We could see the arrow shake a little bit when it was first launched, and then
steady as it made its way to the target. About halfway through the class, some guys showed up, Bo and Luke Duke, if you will. We had no problem removing our arrows from the inch or so they went in to the target. Bo and Luke, their arrows were all the way in, if not coming out the back side.

You know all those things have been heavily restricted in the US since 1934, right?

So we should be stuck with bolt-action Mausers when the "stormtroopers" are using M4s. Great.

You don't have to be a rightwing wingnut to wonder how long our run of relative freedom will last. Cf. Spain in 1936: the people most inclined to fight the fascists from the start usually had to do it with old shotguns and pickaxes, and the only country who'd sell the anti-fascists guns etc. was Stalin's Soviet Union -- with strings attached that included "give us all your gold or else" and "when the going gets tough you're on your own."

Or maybe you think it'll never happen here because Americans are so much smarter than everybody else; or maybe it's that you do but you're on "their" side.

You and five other dorks could rush him all at once. He might stab one guy before somebody gets the knife away and cuts him to ribbons.

But then I'm a product of the Baltimore City public school system from the 1970s. We had to know this stuff.

I live in Casper, Wyoming and Mr. Krumm was a teacher of mine a few years ago. He taught a math class that I took while I was receiving my degree in Geology. He was one of the professors that I looked up during my time in college. He challeneged us, and encouraged us to think critically and creatively when we solved the problems he presented us. He was one of those teachers that had a passion for teaching, and wanted to see his students earn their success. He is the first person that I knew personally that was murdered. This has been a surreal and bizarre set of events that has hit this community hard. One of the real tragedies was that once everyone got out of the building their were students that wanted to go back in to help Mr. Krumm, but couldn't because the doors were automatically set to lock once the building was evacuated. By the time the police arrived and gained access tot he building Mr. Krumm was already dead, and his son was soon to die at the scene.

This kind of thing doesn't happen in Casper. the last murder here was 3 or 4 years ago. To have it happen as bizarrely as it did makes it all the more surreal.

Most modern compounds bows can easily shoot over 300 fps, closer to 400 fps, which is freaking incredible.

I don't know what tip the attacker used, but odds are if the teacher had sat still and calm he wouldn't have bled out before he could get help. But he instead chose to protect his students. He really and truly did give his life for theirs. I can't imagine anything more brave.

Egalitarian: [in response to satirical comments of the no-gun-control crowd]

say what you want, it's a lot easier for one guy to kill a bunch of people with an automatic firearm than with a bow, crossbow, knife, or whatever.

A> It is extremely difficult for anyone to acquire an automatic firearm.
B> Its hard to kill that many people without having a bunch of potential targets running for their lives and hiding, thus making further victims harder to find.

A bow and arrow, you could just drive down the street and fire at pedestrians. By the time you get another arrow loaded up, pedestrians in that area have no idea some guy is playing 'plink the pedestrian'

knife attacks, they are more difficult to get away with multi kills without some do-gooder stopping your fun.

The One True TheDavid: Snort:

Bow and arrows don't kill people, mentally deranged people with good aim kill people.

So you have to be mentally deranged to kill anybody? That supports the pacifist argument that people have to be brainwashed into being soldiers, that inductees have to be purposefully mentally deranged in a militarily useful way.

You missed the good aim part. I like the way you project pacifism onto people. Very sexy. And pathological in a mentally deranged way.

So... he killed his dad's GF and his dad, then himself. I gotta tell ya, I really don't think too many other people were at risk. Sounds pretty much like it was personal and directed.

And so I am thinking the dead dad's heroics were less like heroics and more like a desperate fight for his life.

Not everyone is a hero, and not everyone who targets a specific person publicly is going to wipe out everyone else.

There's no permit required to purchase a pistol in Wyoming.

As long as he didn't have a felony record, had never been adjudicated mentally incompetent, and was a Wyoming resident he could have bought himself a handgun.
