I'm not an Apple person, either. But the iPhone and iPad are great products.

The only real sticking point is iTunes, which just sucks in ways you can't yet imagine.

Draw Something. Netflix. Fantasy football app (if you play it).

TouchMouse is a great app if you have your computer hoocked up to anything. Download the software to your computer and you can use your iPad as a giant touchpad mouse/keyboard for it.

If you have an Xbox, download the SmartGlass app. Pretty cool companion for the Xbox.

Hey! on Fark, IMDb, Flixter, Weather Channel App, Sportacular

Depending on your cable subscriber, you can download an app from them too. I have the Uverse one and it lets me set recordings, check the schedule, and use it like a remote if need be.

VLC remote (if you use that to play movies on your comp).

Just some of my suggestions

You could always try rooting the thing and put whatever is the newest Android platform on it, whatever the hell retarded name this one has.

I like the game Plague, Inc. It's a simulator where you are some sort of pathogen (virus, bacteria, fungus, prion, nanotech virus, etc.)

The whole point of the game is to mutate your pathogen so that you can kill all the humans. Meanwhile, the humans are trying to race against time to develop a cure. Lots of fun. Made by the guys who made the Pandemic flash games.

OP here, I got the pad as a late birthday gift... this is my first apple product, I never asked for this.
romesblog.net

So far, I'm enjoying it... great screen, decent battery life, nice and quick... Its file management that is giving me a headache.

Whats the best way to get audio books, and movies from my PC on to it? Is drop box really the best way?

I can't seem to get my bluetooth to work on it, it detects it fine, and connect, uts just getting music and audio books to play from it over my bluetooth ear piece.

The correct term is jailbreak. Unfortunately no one has been able to jailbreak a 3rd generation iPad with iOS 6.0 IIRC.

Plus, the state of any kind of Android is pretty damn poor on the iPad. Drivers are the biggest issue. There has been work on the original iPad. Yes, the iPad has an ARM based processor, but the latest processors from iPad 2 beyond uses a specialized processor. It has its own instruction sets that I believe would for security issues halt any OS not iOS.

Kindle App for ebooks. skype is also good.

It's from the same guys who did Pandemic - and they fixed it so Madagascar wouldn't ruin the game!

If you don't mind having a massive time-sink on your device, I recommend Pocket Planes.

After a couple hours of shuffling people around you come up for air and scream, "WHY THE F*CK AM I PLAYING THIS STUPID GAME!?!?!"

Then the game beeps at you to let you know that a plane landed in Detroit and needs to be reloaded with more cargo and passengers and sent on to another airport.

cman: The correct term is jailbreak. Unfortunately no one has been able to jailbreak a 3rd generation iPad with iOS 6.0 IIRC.

WRONG

Jailbreak - to leave the walled garden, on android, for example, when you hit the button "allow apps from unknown sources" you are "jail breaking" since now you can use the Amazon, B&N, or any other source for your apps

Root - gaining root account access on the file system

On an iOS device you have to root to jailbreak which is how the terms became conflated, they are not interchangeable as many devices allow you to jailbreak without rooting and most things you can root (anything running a *nix OS) are not walled to begin with

Ooh. Wonder how that would run on a phone? Still don't have a tablet.

Raharu: Its file management that is giving me a headache.

Yes, the iOS file management system is entirely opaque to the end user. Sadly, you're not going to be able to fix that, so you'll just have to learn to use it.

Raharu: Whats the best way to get audio books, and movies from my PC on to it? Is drop box really the best way?

If you're willing to have your movies stream from your desktop to your iPad rather than storing, try the two streaming solutions I mentioned above - Plex and Air Video. Otherwise, your option is to convert the video to MP4 and upload it to the iPad via iTunes.

Raharu: I can't seem to get my bluetooth to work on it, it detects it fine, and connect, uts just getting music and audio books to play from it over my bluetooth ear piece.

That will only work if the Bluetooth earpiece supports A2DP streaming audio over Bluetooth.

Pocket Planes rocks. I had to turn off the notifications so I wasn't checking it every five minutes.

How old is your BT? If it's more than a couple years, it may not support streaming. My new BT can do it just fine, but my girlfriend's old one doesn't.

I have a Samsung HM1200 bluetooth that I got middle of 2012...

Use something else.

The various Angry Birds games are always fun.
Appsgonefree - its an app that lets you know when apps that normally cost money are available for free for a limited time. Updated daily. Not every or even most of the apps are great, but there's a few gems.
Flick golf
Dragonvale, raising dragons for fun and profit.
IBooks, allows you to put .pdf files on your ipad and read them. I use it for gaming, putting the books on there. An IPad is a lot loghter than books.
Paper toss and fruit ninja, fun little time wasters.
Netflix, assuming you have an account.

True, it's mostly unknown (and not a device management app). But it doesn't have that irritating page refresh every time you select another tab and come back that Safari does, so that's a big plus.

No worries.

Its a really nice device, but for the life of me I cant under stand some things about its design, like why wont it let me connect via usb and simply drag and drop files...

EVERY OTHER DEVICE I HAVE EVER OWNED WORKS LIKE THIS.

Because iTunes. Apple doesn't want you to do anything without iTunes. That's the only thing I don't like about my iPhone. You can transfer pictures, but audio/video is a no-go. Now you can download a converter that will let you add videos you've downloaded to your iTunes library (and then transfer to your iPad), but it's not very fast, usually a 1:1 time ratio (if it's a 20 min video, it'll take 20 min to convert).

Useful non-game apps:
Star walk
Npr news
Slacker radio
Pandora
Remote

Console Games:
If you grew up with a sega genesis or ps1, there are a ton of games out there from 99 cents to $15. Shining force, sonic the hedgehog series, final fantasy series, chrono cross/trigger, and a lot of other really good old school rpg/tactic games.

Puzzle games:
7th guest, myst, train yard ex, angry bird variations, etc. etc.

As to transferring books, there is an option in the sync section of iTunes when connected, or you can just email them to yourself and open the emails on the iPad.

Because I've got about 10 other devices that all use Kindle.

Dumb question. I am thinking about getting an I phone, can I do that with MP3s? I realize I can't put them into iTunes, but once they are ont he phone will they play?

Notability - it is an everything type of notebook app. you can import documents, take pictures, record audio, and put it all onto a notepad like page. you can write on pictures or imported maps with your finger. You can photograph a blackboard your teacher spent an hour writing and then make your own notes on it. It has a text recognition search feature that will even search in the pictures and handwritten notes you take. I even take pictures of crossword puzzles and store them for later use. There is a text entry feature for typing in lists or notes if you want.

Why can't you put them into iTunes? mp3s shouldn't be a problem, you just have to add the file/folder to the library.

Do you like crosswords?  Try Shortyz.  Its my favorite.  It downloads real crosswords from places like USA Today, etc. every day.  Like 8-9 per day.

That said, it is the most obnoxious battery-eater I have ever played. Highly recommended to be plugged in if you play it.
