For you city folk that think that meat comes from a supermarket this is not strange. Those of us that grew up in the back woods learn how to use a gun and a knife and how to gut the creatures that we take from nature at an early age. Helped with my first Steer when I was five.

My 2 boys tagged 3 deer this year after the first three years of being shutout. Between the buck mount and processing, we're going to have a grand in deer cost this year. We don't have all the meat back yet, but we got the fresh meat back. Still missing the sausage and the smoked meat (but it's ready for pickup)

No. I tried eating a Verizon once. Many people spoke highly of it, but it was just overpriced and overhyped. All gristle, no meat.

Would love to shoot at larger ones. Not sure about hauling them out of the woods.

I think the first rule of hunting is that you must drive at least two hours away from where you are to get a "good" deer.

When I lived in Kodiak, Alaska, I was amazed by how small Sitka deer were compared to the typical Illinois white tails. Everything else in the state is huge, but the deer were pipsqueaks.

Texas deer run from huge Mule Deer to exotics like Axis, those little jumping black deer, etc. I was looking at some ranch land the other day, and saw turkey, hogs, and four kinds of deer.

And the best thing about these carriers is that they collapse down and can be carried in as a 'backpack'.

I drive about 15 minutes to the area I usually hunt.

Meanwhile, all the bucks migrate into my front yard during deer season.

It can get pricey if you don't already have a lot of that gear - most folks interested in hunting have a lot of it already though. For example:

- Truck - Already owned for camping, boat hauling, etc.
- Lease - Don't need it around here. National Forest is free and open, and a decent place to hunt
- Rifle - Already owned a couple I can use for hunting (it's a hobby/obsession)
- Bullets - See above
- License - $25 for first deer, $15 for follow-on does, so not too bad
- Clothing - Already owned for camping and work
- Deer blind - My cheapy $50 one works just fine
- Deer feeders - Not legal here, so NA
- Game Camera - Bah, don't need one.
- Camping gear - Already owned, all my kids are in scouts.
- Knives/processing equipment - KNife was cheap, and the local processors are pretty inexpensive too

Not true for everyone, sure, but on a per pound basis, it isn't too bad (120 lbs of venison so far this year). At least, that is what I keep telling my wife.

True dat. I'm not complaining. I also own most of that stuff anyway. Good thing is my wife loves venison so she doesn't care that I buy stuff for hunting.

Fun fact, your neighbors old wooden swing set can be easily converted to a functional deer blind for $0 with only scrap wood and a handful of drywall screws.

We have a whole herd of 'em in our neighborhood, the bucks are 10-12 pointers, but they're not much bigger than a large dog.

There's two of em

I bagged a 4-point Sika stag on our farm a week ago, dropped him off at the butcher Tuesday afternoon, and should have all the meat back by this weekend.

For those of you unfamiliar, Sikas are mini-elk, native to Japan, and an invasive species on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. We have nearly 400 acres backing to state wildlife management area (about 22,000 acres) and Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge.

Sikas on the Shore don't get big- not enough genetic diversity or nutrients in the marshes of Dorchester County. 3x3 is about the biggest you'll see, but a couple years ago I bagged a 3x4. But they are fun to hunt. The bucks will bugle like their big elk cousins and the does chirp and bark. We do get some white tails on the property, but earlier in the season when its drier usually. The sikas, even though they're pint size compared to the white tails, will chase them off.

Best part: The meat tastes FAR better (think sweeter) than white tail. Once you've eaten sika, you'll never want a white tail again. Down side? MD only allows one buck and one doe for each of the three seasons. When an average buck dresses at 60-80# and a doe in the high 50's, there's not much meat there.

City guy here. Never hunted. Shot guns in boy scouts and very occasionally make it to the shooting range with friends. I would absolutely love to eat venison I'd shot myself but haven't the faintest idea of how to go about it.

Best way to learn is from someone who knows. Around here it's hard NOT to know someone who hunts (to give you an idea, one of the local schools had a "wear camo to school" day to celebrate the end of the season a couple weeks ago), but ask around at work or ask your friends if they know anyone who hunts. Lots of hunters don't mind taking someone green along for the ride, since it usually means an extra tag or two along with them. If you post where you're from, I'm sure a farker can point you in the right direction for figuring out what you'd need in terms of licensing and whatnot to get you started.

Brother shot 3 and dad shot 2 this fall. Free venison for me for at least another year. 11 year old daughter turns down a NY strip before deer meat.
