"Should the Pope be considered infallible?" Is the correct question.

Only if speaking iCathedra.

You guys just hate Catholics. Bill Donahue is right. Look, it's very complicated, and you have to spend years studying Catholic theology before you can even begin to understand it, let alone try and debate it, so I'll try and dumb it down for you:

The Pope is always right, and if the Pope is wrong, it doesn't count.

There, maybe that'll shut you bigots up.

2012-12-03 08:51:25 AM
He is only infallible when speaking from a fancy chair in a specific cathedral (st peters basilica?) With a special hat on. So if he does those things while tweeting, well yeah i guess so.

Does the Pope shiat in the woods?

Angry Drunk Bureaucrat: Only if speaking iCathedra.

Ok, that's pretty cute. But I seriously doubt any ex cathedra proclamations would be issued via Twitter. Especially given there's only been one or two ever issued at all.

t3knomanser: Bill Donahue is right.

Even satirically, I don't see the need to bring known anti-Semites into the discussion.

Calling Bill Donahue an anti-semite is probably the nicest thing one can say about him.

(For the record, I recognize that, while being one of the two pronouncements ex Cathedra, the Immaculate Conception has nothing to do with the doctrine of Mary's perpetual virginity, but that's hard to fit into 140 characters. Further, frankly, it's hard to write jokes about the Assumption.)

Does the toilet count as long as he has the fancy hat on if the toilet is fancy enough?

Just to be clear, the pope is not continuously infallible in all matters. He can only invoke infallibility in matters of Catholic doctorine. In fact, "infallibility" has only been invoked 2 or 3 times in all of the church's history.

I'm sure most of you don't care, but you know, it's good to be informed.

Only if he says it thrice.

SnarfVader: "Should the Pope be considered infallible?" Is the correct question.

If anyone actually cares, hes only infallible on matters of religion (read: church doctrine/dogma). He doesn't get to say that clouds rain skittles and we all have to agree. (Spoiler warning: We still disagree if we don't like it. My priest just retired and part of his farewell speech was how he was happy he didn't have to deal with the changes to the language of the mass anymore.)

And for pronouncements made on twitter, I doubt they would "premiere" there? But who knows, maybe they're going for a hot, web 2.0 pope!

2012-12-03 11:55:02 AM
"OK, Pope is coming out."

/Thus it is tweeted, thus may it be.
//Damn autocorrect.

Um...I don't need twelve years reading dusty books to know that the Catholic Church is full of horse shiat. They openly pick and choose which parts of the holiest book to follow, ignore significant, long-lasting problems within their own ranks, and then proceed to tell the world how they are the only way to reach a magical bearded man in the sky who destroyed entire cities for gambling. So yeah: full of horse poopie.

/Unless of course you were being satirical/facetious/whatever.

The Assumption of Mary was that it was God farking her.

Well, I guess it depends if the pope is a white or black hat.

2012-12-03 12:21:59 PM
If the pope can convince me the miracle of the herrings isn't asinine bullshiat, I'll start to believe he is infallible.

FYI the "immaculate conception" does not refer to the conception of jesus

Aren't we all done dressing up in costumes and assigning infallibility to old businessmen?

2012-12-03 12:34:15 PM

AeAe: In fact, "infallibility" has only been invoked 2 or 3 times in all of the church's history.

In that case, I guess papal infallibility isn't absurd. Or something.
