I'm convinced that I am being trolled in this thread. It's a washed-out poster which uses crumbly buildings to form the series insignia in the negative space. Oh, and the one next to it? It's a washed-out poster which uses crumbly buildings to form the series insignia in the negative space. It's not unforgivable, but it is blatantly derivative.

I live in Pittsburgh and I can tell you, with 100% certainty, that if you stand downtown and look up at the buildings, it does NOT look like the Batman insignia.

Most likely Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the film's villain. That voice of his just makes the badass character *that* much more sexy.

I'm straight and watching the man play Sherlock gives me tingles.

Directed by J.J. Abrams, the king of unnecessary lens flare
and
Written by Lindelof, master of unexplainable plot holes.

I don't see how this can end well.

I get it. I don't consider him sexy but I'll say the guy has great carriage. Local cinema was showing a London stage presentation of him (and Jonny Lee Miller of "Elementary") playing in "Frankenstein." The actors swapped roles and they showed both versions. Cumberbatch was 100x more watchable (not that Miller was bad).

2012-12-03 08:22:35 PM
oh god
that looks like it was taken right out of a scene from ST: Enterprise
During the time war arc
And Archer and that one guy from the future who at one point was acting as a member of the Enterprises crew (forget his name)

They got stuck on a post apocalypse future earth
Something done or not done led to the federation losing and earth being totally devastated

ST needs to ditch the time travel

The time travel trope should never be a trivial reset button
The price of using it should be catastrophic

That's why The City on the Edge of Forever was so unforgetable
And pretty much franchise defining

This doesn't mean anything, subby. The fact that the author of TFA picked up on this similarity just means that some marketing people did their job correctly. It's a common marketing trick to use something familiar -- either overtly or subliminally -- to draw consumers' attention to something new.

Trik: The time travel trope should never be a trivial reset button

Hence the reason why some people disliked the reboot (time travel, alternate realities, both of which are crutches for the uncreative).

mjbok: Hence the reason why some people disliked the reboot (time travel, alternate realities, both of which are crutches for the uncreative).

Star Trek: The Apple Store was a reboot in every way that matters. Only because Nimoy made an appearance did they have to write in a contrivance that it was some "alternate reality". Like the Romulan going back in time changed things so much that the Enterprise was built in Iowa, as Kirk happened to drive by. Or all the characters became caricatures of their alternate versions.

/god the writing in that movie sucked
//that one effect was cool though, you know, the effect with the light behind the lens

Running the risk of bringing on the wrath of a certain Reboot Defender here, but I watched the last half of the movie the other night on FX and it struck me like a quantum torpedo midships: try as I might not to, I like the movie less and less the more I watch it. I didn't want to be the person who disliked it simply because it was different Star Trek, but man, does that movie lose it's appeal to me upon repeated viewings.

But, about old movie posters, one of my all time favorites is the one from the 1976 remake of King Kong. Yeah, yeah, the movie itself is fairly crummy, but the poster of Kong (not looking anything like the Kong in the movie, by the way-and much larger) straddling the World Trade Center with Jessica Lange in one hand and a freaking El Train in the other is cool.
Now if I could only convince the Wife it'd look cool up on the wall of my office....

Yeah but at least they had imagination, right? Like by the time Revenge of the Sith came around for example, you could just predict...okay paste Anakin's head here, paste Palpatine's head there...any one of us could have done it. They even replaced the awesome posters from the original films with the Photoshopped versions for the "special editions".

to wit

I think the Abrams' Star Trek is almost entirely composed of Fridge Logic.

What's amusing is that the trope page starts off with an example from Alias.

It's weird - I like certain parts more, and others less. I don't care who you are, the Corvette scene is fun. But anything involving Scotty's weird little friend I can do without.

If you skip everything between when he was assimilated (The Best of Both Worlds) and First Contact, it's bad ass. You have to ignore the shiat with Hugh, or whatever the fark his name was.

...as I was saying, yeah, First Contact was great in that respect and Patrick Stewart did a great job expressing someone who needed revenge against an entity that violated him and made him fight against his own people.
