First off, it's Freightliner, and b) they didn't gut it. The truck is still a Freightliner. It still has all of its components. They modified the load area, which may have been empty to begin with, or may have had a hollowed cargo space all ready. All they did was add an oven.

Del Popolo, meaning "of the people," is a food truck crafted from a massive Freightliner M2 turned mobile pizzeria. The diesel is a gourmet behemoth with glass windows covering an entire side of the truck, enabling passerby to gaze into the sleek interior. The inside features a 5,000 lb Stefano Ferrara brick oven and the smell of freshly-made dough baking fills the air as customers wait for a slice of the famous pizza.

The owner, Jon Darsky, hails from New York and sources his organic ingredients from small family-run Italian producers.

This is cool and all, but I'm wondering about his business plan. Is there a shortage of places to buy a slice of pizza in NYC? Or is this guy just "hailing from" NYC and planning on operating the truck somewhere else?

Me, I'm a huge fan of Milwaukee's Streetza pizza truck, but it fills a need. You don't find pizza by the slice on every corner in this town.

I'd think that if anything, the food here would be safer than at a fixed-in-one-spot pizzeria. It's harder for vermin to infest a moving target. Provided he wasn't running the pizza oven while the truck was in motion, I don't see any DOT issues either. And curbside delivery pretty much eliminates any ADA issues; it's a food truck, not a sit-down restaurant.

IMHO, the guy has good idea going here. I'd buy a pie off of him.

There was one outfit here that operated out of a big converted delivery truck. They would make the pie on the way to your house. It closed down a few years ago. They uncovered a number of problems, among which was the difficulty in navigating residential streets and the parking lots of apartment complexes. The $1500 worth of damage that they did backing into my car, for instance. It wasn't just a nudge, they took a 50-foot run at it.

according to his website, he's in san fransico and gets his ingredients locally. from the looks of it, it's brick oven pizza which is somewhat rare even in nyc.

I heard of a prototype pizza van, done by either TI or Raytheon, that effectively microwaved the pizza at 10kw while the driver came to your house. It made pretty good pizza, but the fuel economy of driving a van with a two ton pizza oven wasn't viable.

We have not one but two brick oven pizza trucks here in Philly. One is out during the week (Pitruco), the other is available for rent for special occasions (Nomad Pizza.)

Pitruco used to come to the area I work in, but we weren't as profitable as Love Park or University City. Nomad Pizza is awesome (went to the location in Philly), but you have to leave room for the dessert pizza.

Freightliner aka Freightshaker Pizzabaker?

I'm a bit biased as I helped with refitting the first truck and fabrication and construction of the second truck, but I think this is classier:




1949 Studebaker firetruck and 1952 Studebaker farmtruck, original Big 6 engines, only modification to the completely original engine/drivetrains are overdrive units to help with the weight. Both with woodfire brick ovens built into the truck.

A third truck is under construction - a 1955 Studebaker step van prototype, the only one ever built.
