Obviously,  Subbyknows nothing about the USCG, its history or where it fits into the scheme of things.

All kidding aside, who do you think picks up all the floaters?

Not a pretty job.

Heh, a buddy was in the CG for a few years, back in the 80's.

Approaching ships full of suspected weapons traffickers, his job was to zip around them in a Zodiac, popping smoke to "distract" them if they opened fire. With automatic weapons. On his unarmed inflatable.

He didn't stay with it.

I used to work with a guy who enlisted in the Coast Guard during Viet Nam thinking he would end up serving domestically and get out of any chance of seeing combat.

Not many people had heard of swift boats back then.

I got rescued by the Coast Guard one time. They were like state cops on the water. Polite, professional, not inclined to banter. Was real farking glad to see them arrive.

I made it through 1.5 years out of 4 at the CG Academy in New London, CT. My classmates were some of the smartest people I've ever met, before or since. (Also a couple of the goofiest.) A few are still in service, as upper level officers; all were impressive people.

And then there are the enlisted, who do the real work. I'm still proud to have been associated with them all in a very tangential way, many, many years ago.

Only a drooling landlubber would think coast guard activities are somehow easier than, I dunno, guarding a warehouse full of boots in Oklahoma or Saskatchewan.

Doesn't the USCG course for rescue swimmers have a higher wash-out rate than any course in the world? Higher even than SAS Selection or SEAL training?

dbirchall: Uh huh, Obama and the Dems set it up to fund Big Government on the backs of patriotic sovereign citizens, amiright?

Uh, the United States' legitimacy was not recognized by the British government at that time. It was commonplace when British Warships, which controlled the Atlantic at that time, encountered American ships, they'd sink them and press their crews into service with the Royal Navy, or leave them adrift.

You can take the name away, but that doesn't change the fact that my husband is like Sheldon's twin brother.
