Ohhhh ugly-ass baby elephant? That's different.

/Really do hafta finish reading the headlines before commenting.

Well, i expected to go Ewwww there and went Awwww instead.

Cute li'l pachyderm is cute.

Active labor in Asian elephants usually lasts around 12 to 36 hours.

And the pregnancy itself can last almost two years.

Heavy labor is heavy.

/Is a Baby Elephant the opposite of a Jumbo Shrimp or are they the same?

Leave her alone with baby. She was disturbed last time and wasn't allowed to bond naturally.

They were separated after she (accidentally? on purpose?) stomped on her first baby. They had to do it to protect the little one. Oregon Zoo knows what they're doing.

OK, there's a picture there of the elephant baby ultrasound.

I mean, really. It's more like a baby than a real baby.

Also cute. It has little pink eyes.

You try gestating for 2 years and then going through 5 days of labor.

I imagine the guy who was told to clean up that amniotic sac was vocalizing very loudly.

Yeah, unlike humans most animals aren't born half-baked.

We're naming the baby "Barack", because she's not from Africa, either. j/k/ The keepers are coming up with names which the public will be able to vote on.

Also, you can't see her yet but ZooLights is going on so come in the evenings.

I worked at the Oregon Zoo back when Portland was still a livable city instead of Chicago sans the whimsy.

Yup. Kicking the baby is a normal response, as it gets the newborn breathing and on its feet to avoid becoming easy prey. Samudra's mom hadn't given birth before and got wigged out, and her kicking got out of control, so they had to get the baby out of there for its own safety. Mom and baby were re-acquainted slowly, and fully bonded.

Too hipster for Portland? Where do you live now, actually underground?

No, too Oregonian for Portland. Got sick of living in what's turned into an extension of Los Angeles. Oh, and getting broken into regularly. And a cost of living of Manhattan minus any of the amenities. The city's got some real serious farking issues, but Sam Adams and the city council have their heads so far up their own assholes nothing will get done and Portland will continue to decline like it has for the last 12 years. And if you point out anything wrong, well, most people have the rose colored goggles bolted to their face... I just got tired of entitled and entirely clueless motorists whining to taking away money from what actually moves people in Portland (not to mention dodging the same when they run the wrong way on one-way streets, down the wrong side of the road, drive at night or in the rain without lights, and completely ignore red lights and stop signs), rampant and routine violent and property crime, shiat weather, expensive and shiat food, and a population that is constantly drunk and stoned.
