Here's the deslidified version.

/ decent list

2012-12-02 11:55:54 AM
I feel like I missed the boat on the Half-Life and Portal series.

RDR was the tits though.

2012-12-02 12:04:44 PM
Arkham Asylum was a better game than Arkham City. Arkham City was much bigger, but it traded focus on the narrative and story for sandboxing, which is a step down, if you ask me.

2012-12-02 12:11:18 PM
I'm not sure about greatest but those were certainly among the most memorable. I absolutely loved RDR, Bioshock and Wind Waker. Never have played Half Life.

Currently playing Dead Space 2. Really liking it. Lights off, surround sound turned up makes it more memorable.

2012-12-02 12:39:33 PM
I fully agree.

2012-12-02 01:55:27 PM
No Call of Duty or Halo games made the list? That actually makes it a pretty solid list.

Portal and Portal 2 are excellent. Do yourself a favor and get them.

/So long as "Wind Waker" made the list, I was unconcerned about the rest of it.

2012-12-02 02:11:18 PM
I thought it would be a list of 10 versions of Madden.

2012-12-02 02:23:49 PM
My own personal top 10, in no particular order.

Shadow of the colossus
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
Left4Dead (1&2)
Portal
Fallout 3/NV
Skyrim
Red Dead Redemption
Doom 3
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
Hitman Blood Money

2012-12-02 02:34:44 PM
I was surprised Skyrim didn't make the cut.

Still loved the hell out of RDR. although I got to admit all of the side quest were depressing

Why? Everything they do in that game is done better in other games.

You can't buy Wind Waker anymore, and the used market is charging 100-200 dollars for the game. IT's a shame, I'm trying to get it for my niece.

/ guess it's about time to set up Dolphin on her computer...

Man I considered getting that recently, since I've been trying to do whatever it takes to keep me from going back to WoW. Borderlands looks like a snoozefest grindfest though.

And of all the Zelda games, Wind Waker has probably aged the best. OOoT is still a great game, but it's starting to show it's age. A link to the past still holds up very well though.

*golfclap for Entertainment Weekly for actually doing a great and well-researched list instead of going for the lowest common denominator*

Happy to see Shadow of the Colossus made it on there. I do have to give a vote to Cave Story though, which came out in 2004.

It would go a long way, IMHO, if they'd quit trying to pander and just made a tight, well-made game. The new one looks better than the first one, obviously, but as far as true "improvements", I'm not sure adding bigger, more explodey guns qualifies. The dialogue does have its moments, though, which just further emphasizes my point that if they'd quit pandering, Borderlands 2 would probably be game of the year quality.

mooseyfate: My own personal top 10, in no particular order.

Shadow of the colossus
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
Left4Dead (1&2)
Portal
Fallout 3/NV
Skyrim
Red Dead Redemption
Doom 3
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
Hitman Blood Money

I loved Portal 1/2, Half-Life 2 and its episodes (I liked HL1 but I thought HL2 was quite a bit better), Fallout 3 (NV just isn't doing it for me, I dunno why -- it's good but not great), the whole Mass Effect series (I've played them more times than I'd care to admit), BioShock (both were fun, I preferred 1 over 2, but I found they both got a bit tedious after a while), Deus Ex (only played the first one and it's outstanding, I own the rest but haven't gotten to them yet), and the Monkey Island series. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory was, IMHO, the best in the series. The others were good but not quite the same as CT. Star Wars KOTOR 1 was great, 2 was a little less so.

I'm about 70% through Dead Space 1 and have enjoyed it, though it does seem really repetitive ("go to level, kneecap zombies, repeat"). Mass Effect has spoiled me for over-the-shoulder shooters and Dead Space's total lack of RPG-like elements makes it somewhat weak for me. The Call of Duty series has been consistently fun if somewhat mindless.

I really like games that are either RPGs or shooter-RPGs. Plain shooters aren't as fun as they were. Turn-based strategy games like Civilization and Alpha Centauri are fun but can drag a bit later in the game. I dislike money-sink games like World of Warcraft while being a fan of the RTS Warcraft series.

/your mileage may vary

I could probably drop Hitman: Blood Money for the Mass Effect series. I was trying to ask myself: What games have I played in the last decade that I wish I could play again for the first time? That's what I came up with off the top of my head, but yeah, Mass Effect deserves a spot on any Top 10 list if for nothing else than the way that RPG helped shaped what people consider to be a triple-A quality RPG title. I can't wait until two-sided dialogue becomes the industry standard in RPGs.

Actually, I did. Because they were actually challenging to get, unlike in Arkham Asylum where being there was simply enough.

2012-12-02 03:52:17 PM
Not sure that I would put Mass Effect 2 above 3. The gameplay in 3 was fantastic.

Glad to see Red Dead Redemption in there. Best ending to a video game that I can remember.

2012-12-02 03:56:57 PM
Pretty sure the video game industry is vast enough now that we'll never be able to come up with a unanimously supported Top 10 list. There is lots of space among the genres for people to have vastly divergent favorites.

Not sure if it's a good thing, but because of work and other time constraints I'm having to cut a lot of extraneous gaming and have been left stranded in two genres: sandbox WRPGs (Read: Bethesda products) and grand strategy (Read: Paradox Interactive products).

/still haven't had time to play Mass Effect 3, while I played through the first two at least three times each

Red Dead Redemption and Portal 2, in my opinion, are 2 of the greatest games EVER created.

Full disclosure, I don't play RPGs

Theaetetus: Fallout 3 mebbe should've been on there.

Yeah that's probably my favorite game ever. The only games I've played on the list are Bioshock and Mass Effect 2. While I loved both I think if I had to make a choice it's be Fallout 3. Also this is supposed to be of the last 10 years and there's no PS2 games?

My faves (of last 10 years)in no part order:
Fallout 3/NV(fix the damn glitches and it would move toward the top!)
Bioshock 1/2
GTA: Vice City (PS2)
Mass Effect 2
Uncharted 2 (haven't played others)
Dead Space (haven't played 2)
Rocksmith
Prince of Persia (All for PS2)
Civilization Revolution
Final Fantasy 12 (PS2)

There's probably better games than what I've listed, I just haven't played them.

2012-12-02 04:03:16 PM
9/10 list, because I laughed at how bad nine of the ten choices were.

2012-12-02 04:03:40 PM
mooseyfate: /Not a fan, obviously

It's cell shaded, so that didn't even merit a second glance from me.

// hates cell shading on the majority of games (because it's rarely done well enough), bad cell shading is like fine grit sandpaper rubbing against my eyeballs.

2012-12-02 04:06:54 PM
I really wish Rockstar had decided to put Red Dead out on the PC. I've always wanted to play that, but not 'I want to go buy a new PS3 just for one game' want.

2012-12-02 04:07:17 PM
Pop out Wii Sports and add in Skyrim or Okami and I'm good.

/Would choose Twilight Princess over "Link's Sailing Adventure".

2012-12-02 04:07:44 PM
Glad to see SotC made it on there. My only gripe with that game is that you had to fight the bosses in the order the game dictated, when there was absolutely no reason this needed to be the case. I would have preferred a truly open-world adventure where you could find and defeat them at your leisure.

Would also nominate Okami for the list, at least the PS2 version. Apparently the controls were a bit clunky in the Wii port. But, seriously, you play a wolf goddess that carries a giant sword on her back and kills things by drawing on them, and the whole thing is done in Japanese watercolor style? Awesome.

Since this is a video game thread maybe I can finally get some help with this issue: I bought the original Silent Hill from PSN and downloaded it to my PS3. It looks like crap. The screens covered in a bunch of tiny little diamonds on a transparent lense. It sucks and I have barely played it as a result. I'm hoping when I get a new HDTV it will go away, but I have a 720p plasma now and never had a problem with anything else. This is also the reason I won't buy any more PS classics until I get it figured out. Any help/advice will be appreciated.

mooseyfate: I could probably drop Hitman: Blood Money for the Mass Effect series.

I've been accumulating games on Steam for a while and Hitman is one of them. I really need to play it, as it's been on my list for ages. And yes, I'd love to go back and play the ME series again: I loved the sense of exploration in ME1 (even if it did lead to near-identical habitats on a zillion similar worlds with obnoxious terrain but gorgeous skyboxes), the sense of impending doom, better gameplay, and lots of new characters (and their stories) in ME2, and the main-plot-related gameplay and sense of epic finality (not to be confused with "finale", which I thought was a bit lacking but oh well) and "once more into the breach, my friends" in ME3. That said, I found that ME3 was really sorely lacking in details outside of the main plotline: I'd really like to see more side quests like in ME1 and 2, but alas it was not to be.

My top 10 from the last ten years (not that anyone cares)

1. Journey
2. Shadow of the Colossus
3. Flower
4. Red Dead Redemption
5. Spec Ops: The Line
6. Portal 1
7. Portal 2
8. Skyrim
9. Bioshock
10. GTA: San Andreas

It's not too late to check out Portal - it holds up. It's a fun game with a dark sense of humor. And the second one is a worthy successor.

My vote would be for Bioshock. I'm not into first-person shooters, but the world and the story they created was so engaging, it was impossible not to get sucked in. The second one was weak in comparison though. Hope the third one is good. :)

GameCube games will (reportedly) be available on the Wii U store, but they are not part of the Wii store. The Wii console having only 512MB of internal storage may be a factor.
