I wouldn't want a bunch of bigots like the Salvation Army involved in anything I did, either. But because they're actively anti-gay, as an organizational policy. Unfortunately, it seems the complaints here are "they take attention away from me!!!!" so, everyone involved sucks.

F*cking author ever heard of a paragraph?

It's like they're not taught how to write.

Which is funny because that's supposed to be their profession.

This overuse of carriage returns makes shiat unreadable.

"Thanks, I'll skip this article," says Babwa Wawa.

"It's an outrage.

It's almost like the author's word processor or keyboard is screwed up so that the period and the carriage return are the same key!

But then I realized that they put a carriage return after an endquote as well."

Anyway, I don't think much of the editorial style of this "Star-Telegram" web site.

It's almost as if they don't have any editors.

And their writers are eighth graders.

They certainly couldn't be college graduates, because any blue book exam turn in with this style of writing would be given an "F" on sheer principle.

Yet, the use of the single-sentence paragraph seems to becoming more and more common.

It is, however, annoying.

Beyond annoying, it breaks up the simple readability of a paragraph.

Ideally, one should have a topic sentence.

This would be a sentence where one makes a point of fact or assertion.

Then would come the supporting sentences.

These would be where one would place the evidence supporting the topic sentence.

Then, finally, one would have a conclusion sentence, which summarizes the topic and supporting sentence.

Of course, there are exceptions.

Like Hemingway.

Or David Foster Wallace.

But since they're both dead, I'd say that this author is neither.

And in any case, this couldn't be considered literature.

This is all I have to say on this subject.

No doubt. Stuff folds up and gets stored in a custom-made box, in all likelihood. If you're doing REAL Christmas lights, you spend at least an hour or two doing your best "I bet the Jews did this" meme imitation as you untangle strands, then you use rickety ladders and pool skimmer poles to get the strands thrown up in your trees (never, ever to come down again).
People who set their lights up exactly four inches apart really, really worry me. I don't even like those light nets. Too premade-looking. Unfortunately, they seem to be the wave of the future. You know what I really want? About five sets of these motherfarkers. That would be seriously tits.

Do you have any idea how hard it was to find an unlit tree? And 9 of the 10 that are lit are white lights only. What the fark people. How farking lazy have we gotten that people can't light up their own goddamn tree anymore?

I_Am_Weasel: I see you've pronounced sentencing.

I'm not sure that I've "pronounced sentencing".

It's more of a commentary on style.

And readability.

You can't forget readability.

A writer enters into a sort of contract with his or her reader.

That is to say:

Insofar as the goal of the writer is to convey information, that information will be presented in a manner that is as easily consumed as possible, while preserving the essence of the information.

For a very long time, the paragraph has been a core feature of this information conveyance.

Without the paragraph, the reader cannot grasp the role (or importance) of the sentence.

So, using the f*ing article as an example, I don't know which sentence provides a thesis, which provides evidence in support of the thesis, and which provides a conclusion that encompasses both the idea and the supporting evidence.

These are not necessarily intrinsic in all writing, but they are required for succinct and reliable delivery of information.

Which, one would think, is the goal of a newspaper

So when I see someone writing in this style for a newspaper, I can only think a number of things.

Including:

1. The newspaper has abrogated its responsibility to disseminate information

2. The author is uneducated

3. The author is getting paid by the line, rather than the content, word, or sentence

I suppose there are probably other reasons to see this style of writing from a "professional".

But the only legitimate reasons could be leveraged by creative types.

Meaning writers of literature.

Or satirists.

I saw the complaints as "we create this attraction. now some charity group wants to use it to raise money for themselves."

Of course I don't know how they do things in this neighborhood. We have one near here that is the whole street done up for viewing while driving or walking. We also have a few places around that are one-three houses setup up both inside and outside and have donation boxes placed around to help them pay for it all. If these people have their own donation boxes, maybe they are objecting to the competition.
