Doesn't affect me, I buy Morningstar Farms veggie burgers. You know, the ones with water chestnuts.

/those are water chestnuts, right?

I actually had a vegan friend tell me "At least I don't have to worry about being killed by a bad veggie burger".

*makes mental note to pass this story along*

Getting a real kick.

Veggie Patch sucks. Yves is the shiz.

bu-bu-bu-but I thought vegan food was all natural and full of unicorns and shiat? You mean to tell me it's just as filled with shiat as the food they volunteer to constantly tell us is chemically treated unhealthy shiat?

And emulsifiers, release agents, and other technological marvels of the food industry!* Since the package shown in TFA mentions it is "now even juicier!" I have to assume the juiciness is what kept the Listeria thriving. Don't worry, bacteria is vegan!

*That happen to the vegan.

I also play guitar, but the trombone is just funnier. Next time there's a FARK party, hold tryouts.

Veggie burgers make about as much sense as non alcoholic beer.

2012-12-01 09:14:59 PM
This is exactly why vegetarianism should be banned. Dead plants can be full of bacteria and can bring disease and sickness into your body.

Why did you think that? That seems like a rather odd understanding of vegetarian/vegan alternatives.

Falafel patties are delicious. So are roasted portobello mushrooms. Those burger things? Not so much.

Vegetarian food is usually tastier when it doesn't pretend to be meat.

I am a former meat eater and I must say that I find it weird when the "moral vegetarians" (are vegetarians because they feel sorry for the animals) lust after mystery meats.

Listeria in veggie burgers along with the salmonella contaminated organic peanut butter a month or so back makes me wonder if all of this health food is really any better for me than plain old steak and potatoes.

There are plenty of delicious vegetarian dishes that don't pretend to be a meat product, although if you put veggie chicken and Taco Bell chicken in front of me, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Actually, you got it right subby. Most people don't know that taint is not recognized by the UDSA as meat, so some companies use taint to flavor-up their veggie burgers. It can add a hint of earthy tang, as well as giving the burger a more natural brown color.

/what?
//why is everyone looking at me like that?

I was super surprised at how good a Tofurky Italian sausage was. I like meat and that was a pretty good substitute.

Glad to see it's not Yves, seeing as I bought a 4-pack of burgers yesterday. Schneider's also makes good burgers and nuggets. Veggie Patch is meh. Gardein's is nasty (the sliders - great idea, terrible execution).

I don't eat meat because I like animals. However, I see no issue with going for the fake meat products. It's not the taste (or shape) of meat I dislike - I liked it before I went veggie, so why would that change? I think that some people can change their responses to certain smells over time, but I didn't worry about that. Meat is yummy. I just wish it didn't come from animals that I know *I* would not be able to kill.

Don't forget, a lot of the plant stuff that goes into veggie products is fertilized with cow shiat, so contamination is possible.

I don't think they can really call these vegetarian as long as there's any level of bacteria in them. Aren't bacteria just really really small animals?

Teeny-tiny bunnehs and kittens all up in your veggie burger.
