How long until the derposphere starts whining about discrimination for her being hired because she's a woman?

2012-12-01 05:05:43 PM
She now chairs a committee she was not on before.

The GOP decided they'd probably appoint some women to be committee chairs, but by that time the geniuses had filled almost all of them.

"See how serious we are womenfolk?"

The House Administration Committee deals with the pertinent administrative business of the House. The committee can decide such mundane things as whether or not the House cafeterias will use paper or Styrofoam plates -- or more serious matters such as benefit packages for congressional workers and how the Library of Congress operates. The Committee also monitors the expense accounts of House members.

Hey, at least they let her get sworn into office. so that's something, right?

I'm looking forward to when we have our first female president in the next twenty years. I wonder what the knock against her will be? For President Obama, the dogwhistles are "Kenyan" and "Socialist." When we get a Hispanic president, we'll get "beholden to the Pope" and "today, the president spoke IN SPANISH to..." assuming that this president will be able to speak Spanish.

I bet for our female president, we'll get "she seemed hysterical" and "is she using logic here, or is she going on her FEELINGS."

I hope they aren't going to trouble her pretty little head with real work. She should just be happy to be able to come into the room and sit quietly while the men work.

I realize that conservative feel that they will win over votes through empty gestures, but aren't they trying to win votes from people more intelligent than the conservatives that voted for them in the last election?

Look at the roster of up-and-comers. Maybe I'm missing something, but the only femal evangelical Protestants seem to be on the fundie/teabagger right. It doesn't seem the demographics support your bet. So I guess I'm in. I'd also like to make a 1-year TF side bet that the first female US president is a progressive populist.

I love how republicans want to ban everyone from making decision based on diversity but then realize its something important for them to do themselves. If they don't believe in diversity then they should have just told people to F off. Instead they are being hypocrites.

Hmmm - you could be right. I don't really know much (when it comes to their personal beliefs) about Rubio and Cruz on the Republican side and about...who would be the biggest Latino up-and-comers in the Democratic party? I need to think about this first.

The first Hispanic POTUS isn't even on the radar screen. The Hispanic vote is the least understood demographic by either side out there.

I think a socially conservative evangelical Hispanic would make huge inroads in Texas and other parts of the Southwest.

Maybe it should be noted that legislators generally serve on multiple committees. The issue is that the GOP didn't have any women or minorities as chairman of any committee.

Indeed - just pointing out that what derided as "political correctness" is sometimes perfectly rational, especially when broads are concerned.

Hells yeah, don't want to get them dames in a tizzy or nothing.

My point is that here in the moment when the GOP are deliberately pandering to women after being rightfully chastised for having no women or minorities Chairing any important committees, in this one moment how absolutely self-defeating is it of him to have used what some deem sexist language instead of giving a nod to equality in language?

/My original post just had the word "Chairman" and a pic saying "you're doing it wrong" before I expanded the thought.

2012-12-01 08:33:24 PM
I have to come and defend the GOP, much to my dismay. Not the fact they decided to put in a token woman afterwards, nor that Boehner couldn't be bothered to say "chairperson" at least in this one case. Annoyed at both of them.

But the Administrative Committee includes HR for all staff and pages, the Federal Register, the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian.

Sure, those aren't exciting things, but logistics is pretty important.

doyner: How long until the derposphere starts whining about discrimination for her being hired because she's a woman?

I'll start. Because the point of feminism is not 'oh, we'll just look around for a token woman and stick her in a position at random'. It's 'hire the most competent person for the job, male or female'.

And if your entire party is old white men, the root problem which you need to address is your party, not putting a token woman in a token position.

/Pet peeve
//Fiction tries to call itself 'feminist' by sticking a woman in a token position, or by calling a rageaholic\idiot who can't do anything but yells about wanting to do things loudly a 'strong woman'. Amazingly enough, that is completely missing the point.
