Thats their right as a society, who are we to proclaim from thousands of miles away indpendent of their culture and history how they should live. Unless you're a bigot and you hate muslims, neitheir christianity nor secularism should be proclaiming some kind of moral high ground over others. Thats pretty much the exact definition of a bigot.

No. Fark that moral relativism bullshiat. These people hate art. They hate art because any time spent on art is time spent not worshipping their god. To attack and kill those who create art is to not be fully human. These "people" need to be expunged from the Earth as soon as possible.

Fundamentalism is bad. Even more so when it attempts to wipe out culture in the name of religion.

Would you show the same hatred for the palestinian, hamas fundamentalists/extremists and their desire to wipe Israel off the face of the earth?

Get on spotify and check out Toumani Diabate. He plays an instrument called a kora, which is a kind of harp, When doubled with a balafon (a kind of marimba), and topped with singing, the result is some amazing, emotional playing. If you're not familiar with Malian music, give it a try. If you're used to western rock, it's definitely gonna be different, but it's great stuff.

The destruction of the libraries in Timbuktu is one of the great cultural losses of mankind. I'm not a Muslim, but the loss of historic texts going back to the 12th and 13th centuries sickens me. Now the loss of their music, too.

Why the hell can't we all just get along?

Same time it is in the rest of the Muslim world: 632 AD.

These people think music is evil and want to kill musicians. There is no reason on Earth we should suffer these whackjobs to continue to draw breath. When you find someone carrying out such a vile, thoroughly wicked philosophy, there should be no debate, no hand-wringing. These people need to die. NOTHING good comes of people who believe, and act upon, such outrageous nonsense. If the governments of the world had any balls at all, we'd start shipping troops over there and slaughtering these guys immediately.

Jewish Fundamentalists in Brooklyn have used sandblasters to remove painted bike lanes
-----------------------------

...and last week Islamists beheaded 23 people at a wedding because they were dancing, you need to put this all in perspective. Why is it that when Islamists continue their rampage of death and destruction the threads turn to America and Christian bashing?

Nobody...and I mean this, absolutely ZERO people, are equating murder with sandblasting bike lanes.

At all.

That is only happening in your imagination.

What people are saying is that "fundamentalism," regardless of the particular flavor, is an attempt to force the many to abide by the beliefs of a few. It is wrong when Muslim fundamentalists do it. It is wrong when Jewish fundamentalists do it. It is wrong when Christian fundamentalists do it. It's the fundamentalism that is the problem, not the nickname that people call their gods.

Jake Steed: Remember guys and girls, Islamists are bad but Christians are just the same and/or worse.

Notice how quickly the the Christophobes on Fark quickly lump Christians and Isamists together and just call them "Fundies"? Sad.

We lump all Fundamentalists together of all religions because they all do the same thing, which is attempt to force all others who are not like them to abide by their rules. Their tactics may have changed and/or become less violent than different fundamentalist groups of a different time or era, but that doesn't mean we should ignore them.

Jewish Fundamentalists in Brooklyn have used sandblasters to remove painted bike lanes, due to the fact that the bikers dress more scantily clad than your common Orthodox Jewish male or female in that area (apparently they haven't heard of "self control" or "looking away"). But during the time of the Temple still existing, if you were working on Shabbos (do a quick browsing on Wikipedia or a Jewish website for "prohibited activities on shabbat", because 'working' didn't mean deciding to go to the office instead of the synagogue) you would be executed. How much do you want to bet those Fundamentalists I mentioned earlier would rather be legally executing people for driving during Shabbos instead of just throwing rocks at cars?!

Christian Fundamentalists today attempt to get library books removed (and burned sometimes, symbolically "destroying the evil) because they carry, in the Fundamentalist's eye a pagan, pornographic, or other "evil trait". (That "evil trait", free thinking, I bet!) Back in the past, we had a time period where the Christians exerted legal control over the governments, it was called "The Dark Ages" when all forms of innovation were suppressed in favor of doctrinal control over the people.

Muslim Fundamentalists are pretty much doing the same thing that happened during the Christian led "Dark Ages" (they're a younger religion, going through similar stages as both Judaism and Christianity I bet, but that of course doesn't excuse these Fundamentalists' actions). Luckily for us, we have much better technology and remembrance of the past "dark ages" in order to make sure we don't go through that again (I hope). But in all faiths the Fundamentalists are fighting against both the regular adherents of their faith and non-adherents, to try to shape us more like them. Don't attack us as "Christophobes" because we correctly link the danger of Fundamentalism to all faiths and not just only Islamic Fundamentalism!

I've been a big fan of African music since before "World Music" was temporarily in fashon in the early 90s. Many musicians in Africa belong to hereditary musical families that go back eight or nine hundred years. Africa has also been quick to adopt, adapt and mash-up musical traditions from abroad which makes for wonderful innovation and fusions. Some of it is as good as anything.

It is tragic what is happening in Mali. Not only is the music in danger of dying in one of the world's great centres of music but Timbuktu is home to large private libraries of hand-written manuscripts from a period of cultural growth and innovation. There is also some very fine art produced in countries with large funamentalist insurgencies. These are no better than vandals and iconoclasts who have destroyed so much of the cultural heritage and treasures of the last few thousand years.

We should be supporting the cultures and civilizations at threat instead of obsessing solely on oil and geostratic power struggles.

Some of the Iranian music I've heard stands up to comparson with classics from European music. It was court music and thus had a very sophisticated audience like the music of Mozart and his predecessers. It has also been preserved and built upon by very innovative generations of musicians influenced by modern global music.

Each of these cultural traditions under attack by fanatics and revolutionaries is as valuable as the best of the West and should not be allowed to perish.
