Favorite Malian artists:

Oumou Sangare
Ramata Diakite
Mama Toumani Kone
'Miss' Maawa Malaika

The Mali scene and Wassoulou music in general are a HUGE loss, if this continues.
Here's hoping.

Jake Steed: Remember guys and girls, Islamists are bad but Christians are just the same and/or worse.

Notice how quickly the the Christophobes on Fark quickly lump Christians and Isamists together and just call them "Fundies"? Sad.

[yawn]

Want people to stop calling you a fundamentalist? I can suggest some ways to avoid that horrible outcome, if it really bugs you. There are a few simple steps you can take to avoid getting slandered with that label.

We lump all Fundamentalists together of all religions because they all do the same thing, which is attempt to force all others who are not like them to abide by their rules. Their tactics may have changed and/or become less violent than different fundamentalist groups of a different time or era, but that doesn't mean we should ignore them.

Jewish Fundamentalists in Brooklyn have used sandblasters to remove painted bike lanes, due to the fact that the bikers dress more scantily clad than your common Orthodox Jewish male or female in that area (apparently they haven't heard of "self control" or "looking away"). But during the time of the Temple still existing, if you were working on Shabbos (do a quick browsing on Wikipedia or a Jewish website for "prohibited activities on shabbat", because 'working' didn't mean deciding to go to the office instead of the synagogue) you would be executed. How much do you want to bet those Fundamentalists I mentioned earlier would rather be legally executing people for driving during Shabbos instead of just throwing rocks at cars?!

Christian Fundamentalists today attempt to get library books removed (and burned sometimes, symbolically "destroying the evil) because they carry, in the Fundamentalist's eye a pagan, pornographic, or other "evil trait". (That "evil trait", free thinking, I bet!) Back in the past, we had a time period where the Christians exerted legal control over the governments, it was called "The Dark Ages" when all forms of innovation were suppressed in favor of doctrinal control over the people.

Muslim Fundamentalists are pretty much doing the same thing that happened during the Christian led "Dark Ages" (they're a younger religion, going through similar stages as both Judaism and Christianity I bet, but that of course doesn't excuse these Fundamentalists' actions). Luckily for us, we have much better technology and remembrance of the past "dark ages" in order to make sure we don't go through that again (I hope). But in all faiths the Fundamentalists are fighting against both the regular adherents of their faith and non-adherents, to try to shape us more like them. Don't attack us as "Christophobes" because we correctly link the danger of Fundamentalism to all faiths and not just only Islamic Fundamentalism!

Why are you bringing up old shiat? We pretty much rule the world, and the majority of Americans are God-fearing Christians, therefore American Jesus is best and can do no wrong.

Also, when you play "Jesus loves me" backwards, it sounds like "We smell sausage". Clearly, God wants us to eat sausage, which comes from pigs. Islamists don't eat pigs, so they are going against God.

Then again, they do kill gheys and oppress women, so they can't be all bad

/I'm tired, and have no idea where I'm going with this

If you read my post *in context*, you would see that I was showing off the bad actions of fundamentalists in general and this is one of the examples of something that is showing that Jewish Fundamentalists (even though they don't actively proselytize to non-Jews, only other Jews) are willing to remove something that's made for everyone, in order to get others to conform to what these Fundamentalists wants.

You can't be for killing gays and enjoying sausage at the same time, that line of thinking is Fundamentally flawed!!

Imagine the Right-wing Christians rounding up all the blues musicians in Chicago, or torturing jazz musicians in New Orleans. It's just unfathomable.

Their songs carry a religious message. It it wasn't islamist fundies driving them away it would have been atheist fundies.

Well, no, since nobody's forcing me to listen to the religious songs, I really don't care. Given the popularity of these artists, I'm sure there's a large audience who wants to hear them, and it would be dickish of me to take that away from them.

/live and let live, how does it work?

...and last week Islamists beheaded 23 people at a wedding because they were dancing, you need to put this all in perspective. Why is it that when Islamists continue their rampage of death and destruction the threads turn to America and Christian bashing?

Nobody...and I mean this, absolutely ZERO people, are equating murder with sandblasting bike lanes.

At all.

That is only happening in your imagination.

What people are saying is that "fundamentalism," regardless of the particular flavor, is an attempt to force the many to abide by the beliefs of a few. It is wrong when Muslim fundamentalists do it. It is wrong when Jewish fundamentalists do it. It is wrong when Christian fundamentalists do it. It's the fundamentalism that is the problem, not the nickname that people call their gods.

I'm not exactly an athiest, but I consider most organized religion to be a scam, ancient superstitious mumbo jumbo, or both. That doesn't mean I can't enjoy spiritual music. If a Gospel song has a good beat, I can dance to it. I can chill out to a nice Gregorian chant. The music linked in this thread is pretty cool. Hell, I even had a Jars of Clay cd. As far as I'm concerned, if it sounds good, I'll listen to it. I may not get into the message behind it, but I can still enjoy it.

Besides, I doubt there are enough atheist "fundies" in the area to do much harm. But feel free to feel as oppressed as you want

Banning music is a form of oppression
And destroying historical artifacts because their makers were not like you is, as I see it, akin to genocide.

Surely it's possible to be muslim without being more nutters than the rest of us.
