No. Fark that moral relativism bullshiat. These people hate art. They hate art because any time spent on art is time spent not worshipping their god. To attack and kill those who create art is to not be fully human. These "people" need to be expunged from the Earth as soon as possible.

This, among others.

Here's another musical suggestion: If you like the blues, look on Spotify for "Ali and Toumani," a recording of two of Mali's most revered musicians: Ali Farka Toure on guitar and Toumani Diabate on Kora. It's damned beautiful, and you'll hear the origins of the blues.

What the fark are you talking about? I consider myself a liberal, and I hate religious extremists everywhere. I'm all for people practicing their own faiths, no matter how ridiculous they may be, but when they start killing people because their deity of choice says so, that's where I draw the line.

By order of the prophet
We ban that boogie sound
Degenerate the faithful
With that crazy Casbah sound
But the Bedouin they brought out
The electric kettel drum
The local guitar picker
Got his guitar picking thumb
As soon as the Sharia
Had cleared the square
They began to wail...

Sharia don't like it
Rockin' the Casbah

Old enough to know better: What kind of farked up religion bans music? That's shiatty cartoon level villainy.

Somebody want to quote me a verse here?

There is no actual verse in the Koran that mentions music but there is apparently some mention in the hadith literature, which is other scripture following Muhammad, but even that isn't very clear.
Apparently the main argument against it is that it can cause an emotional response which may cause you to lose your reason or become excited - basically the same arguments used for keep clothing simple, and women covered, etc.
There's some discussion of it here: Music in the World of Islam

I've been a big fan of African music since before "World Music" was temporarily in fashon in the early 90s. Many musicians in Africa belong to hereditary musical families that go back eight or nine hundred years. Africa has also been quick to adopt, adapt and mash-up musical traditions from abroad which makes for wonderful innovation and fusions. Some of it is as good as anything.

It is tragic what is happening in Mali. Not only is the music in danger of dying in one of the world's great centres of music but Timbuktu is home to large private libraries of hand-written manuscripts from a period of cultural growth and innovation. There is also some very fine art produced in countries with large funamentalist insurgencies. These are no better than vandals and iconoclasts who have destroyed so much of the cultural heritage and treasures of the last few thousand years.

We should be supporting the cultures and civilizations at threat instead of obsessing solely on oil and geostratic power struggles.

Some of the Iranian music I've heard stands up to comparson with classics from European music. It was court music and thus had a very sophisticated audience like the music of Mozart and his predecessers. It has also been preserved and built upon by very innovative generations of musicians influenced by modern global music.

Each of these cultural traditions under attack by fanatics and revolutionaries is as valuable as the best of the West and should not be allowed to perish.

There is one reason to bring them up, and that's to point out the very reasonable fact that every one of these religions is based on nothing of substance. So it's a bit hypocritical for a Jew or Christian to say "God doesn't want you doing that, it says right here in my book," and Muslims can answer "No, my book clearly says I'm doing God's work here." When you open the door to faith and belief over evidence and reasoning, all stupid religions are just as valid as any other. As I said up thread, what if the one true god is the guy who wants Mali to be a hell hole?

Same time it is in the rest of the Muslim world: 632 AD.

These people think music is evil and want to kill musicians. There is no reason on Earth we should suffer these whackjobs to continue to draw breath. When you find someone carrying out such a vile, thoroughly wicked philosophy, there should be no debate, no hand-wringing. These people need to die. NOTHING good comes of people who believe, and act upon, such outrageous nonsense. If the governments of the world had any balls at all, we'd start shipping troops over there and slaughtering these guys immediately.

I do realize that, but if someone whipped, executed or cut the hands off one of my loved ones for perceived violation of some obscure religious rule. I think I'd find a discreet way of returning the punishment.

In Malian society, music anchors every ceremony, from births and circumcisions to weddings and prayers for rains. Village bards known as griots sang traditional songs and poems of the desert, passing down centuries-old tales of empires, heroes and battles, as well as their community's history. In this manner, memories were preserved from generation to generation, along with ancient African traditions and ways of life.

No, this isn't their culture. This is basically a foreign faith shiatting all over the local customs.

I'm a musician. I enjoy karaoke. I'm also a scientist and a big fan of reason and inquiry. fark the hell out of these religious nutjobs.

History may yet bit these fundamentalists on the ass. The result they want is people to be more pious, the result they are more likely to get is people become more furious. When the Taliban took Afghanistan they did exactly the same thing. I remember one of the first things people wanted was to hear music that was not based on the Koran when the Taliban fell. That and a report of a Taliban fighter seen dead in Kabul. He was laying there with a bullet wound, his body covered in cassette tape.

Quite frankly, if fundamentalist Christians gained the same sort of authoritarian power over here, undoubtedly they'd be pulling the same sorts of horrific shenanigans. Western society isn't that far removed from the days when Christians tortured and executed heretics, burned witches and carried out pogroms. Thankfully, as the control that Christianity used to have over all aspects of society waned, so did its barbarism. The religious right is trying to roll back that history.

Unfortunately, Uganda is now providing a modern example of what happens when you let Christian barbarians run the show. They seem to be going back and forth on whether their new anti-gay law should include the death penalty. The stories are currently contradictory, with some saying it has been removed and other saying that its status will only be settled when their parliament votes. At any rate, at the very minimum, homosexuality will carry a term of life imprisonment, a move being cheered by American religious zealots.
