I worked with a terrific guy in the mid 80s from Mali. Educated in France, spoke 5 or 6 languages. When his Father died, he went back to Mali because he was the oldest male in the family. From Timbuktu, when I hear about stuff like this I wonder about him. Hope you're OK Mamadou.

seriously. they're going to freak once someone brings in electricity and running water. damn.

Very sad. I love listening to the music that comes out of Mali.

Fundamentalism is bad. Even more so when it attempts to wipe out culture in the name of religion.

2012-12-01 05:23:11 PM
Why is that the more extreme the people take their religion, the more they want to crush the joy out of life?

Stop having fun! Life is meant to be endured, not enjoyed!

SCANDALOUS

FTFA: The extremists also destroyed tombs and other cultural treasures, saying they were against Islamic principles.

Yeah, these assholes are trying to destroy history, including Islamic history. I certainly hope the African Union and ECOWAS troops are capable of stopping them--Mail's army doesn't seem to be.

2012-12-01 05:30:49 PM
They have installed an ultraconservative brand of Islamic law in this moderate Muslim country, reminiscent of Afghanistan's Taliban and Somalia's al-Shabab movements. Now, women must wear head-to-toe garments. Smoking, alcohol, videos and any suggestions of Western culture are banned. The new decrees are enforced by public amputations, whippings and executions, prompting more than 400,000 people to flee.

It's amazing how horribly a mind can be twisted by religious faith. They've created Hell on Earth,

I think I see why the fundies are threatened ...

In a way, it's almost comforting that there seems to be genuine evil out there in the world.
You can say the fanatics are a product of their environment, perhaps, but their minds aren't there any more.
You could have a movie about rallying about and killing these zealots, and you wouldn't really have any quandaries about their deaths.

Interesting to see. Public stations strike again, those socialist bastards.

Mourning the loss of this bit of cultural heritage, a local man said "good golly, I miss Mali music."

I've always wanted to visit Mali. Let's hope there's something left of it. The Islamists have already started demolishing ancient mud churches.

Q: How come we can chase down el quaeda in Afghanistan, the Iraq, Libya, Yemen, Pakistan, and everywhere else, but not Mali?

A: Mali is in Africa and that's where blah people come from so phukkit.

Same time it is in the rest of the Muslim world: 632 AD.

These people think music is evil and want to kill musicians. There is no reason on Earth we should suffer these whackjobs to continue to draw breath. When you find someone carrying out such a vile, thoroughly wicked philosophy, there should be no debate, no hand-wringing. These people need to die. NOTHING good comes of people who believe, and act upon, such outrageous nonsense. If the governments of the world had any balls at all, we'd start shipping troops over there and slaughtering these guys immediately.

This gave me a chuckle.

/remember, for the small evil things that Islamic Fundamentalists do, we should not only condemn these acts but also other fundamentalist actions of other religions as well
//for example, Christian Fundamentalists doing a book burning or Jewish Fundamentalists throwing rocks at cars during Shabbat

I dont see what the problem is, they are practicing their religion the way it is stated. Thats their right as a society, who are we to proclaim from thousands of miles away indpendent of their culture and history how they should live. Unless you're a bigot and you hate muslims, neitheir christianity nor secularism should be proclaiming some kind of moral high ground over others. Thats pretty much the exact definition of a bigot.

Arby's music is oddly reminiscent of some traditional Buddhist music I heard when I lived in Taiwan. It was the guitar style in the background.

Get on spotify and check out Toumani Diabate. He plays an instrument called a kora, which is a kind of harp, When doubled with a balafon (a kind of marimba), and topped with singing, the result is some amazing, emotional playing. If you're not familiar with Malian music, give it a try. If you're used to western rock, it's definitely gonna be different, but it's great stuff.

The destruction of the libraries in Timbuktu is one of the great cultural losses of mankind. I'm not a Muslim, but the loss of historic texts going back to the 12th and 13th centuries sickens me. Now the loss of their music, too.

Why the hell can't we all just get along?

/I'm serious. WTF?

No. Fark that moral relativism bullshiat. These people hate art. They hate art because any time spent on art is time spent not worshipping their god. To attack and kill those who create art is to not be fully human. These "people" need to be expunged from the Earth as soon as possible.

Nothing shows more ignorance than a Liberal warbling "Islam is a Religion of Peace"...even though Islam forbids gays, abortion, womens rights....all issues Liberals support.

Liberals would be going full-apoplexy if Christians were doing this

I'm entertaining the idea of raising a group of militant musicians to arm ourselves and go fight these farksticks, First, continually blast them with really loud music to disorient them, then go in for the kill. So call me a bigot, Music must be defended from these perverters of religion.

/i generally believe condemning someone to nonexistence because of one's beliefs is the greatest sin of all
//but they're doing much more -- oppression and mutilation to name but two

Well, in all fairness, they may have chosen both the proper god and proper way to worship. Maybe god is an insufferable dick who hates priceless cultural artifacts.

I was thinking something similar. My idea was to get all those who play their music at ridiculous levels when driving down the street, send them armed to the areas that are in peril, and let them fight it out. I know its not the best idea, but on one hand they will be fighting intolerance, and on the other, I won't have to hear them at 1AM when they drive by shaking my windows.

/peace out

FTFA: hard-liners who have decreed any form of music - save for the tunes set to Koranic verses - as being against their religion.

Similar Islamist hard-liners also get pissed off if you sing Koranic verses... link
