Coastalgrl: FARK CANCER.

If the pharm companies are indeed sitting on a cure then those in charge need to go to the fifth circle of hell.

The idea that any company that would sit on something that would make them a TON of cash is silly. The idea that there will ever be a singe cure for cancer is just, stupid. Each form of cancer is a separate disease. Many are related, but there would need to be dozens of cures for humanity to be rid of this curse.

No one is "sitting on a cure." There is no cure. Go read up on cancer....it is a time bomb built into the reproduction of human cells.

Celebrate survival.

I really doubt anyone has a cure since there are so many different ways cells can "break" and go into uncontrolled division. Some chemo drugs target rapidly dividing cells, but while they get the cancer, they get skin and blood producing cells too. It's pretty difficult to find something unique enough to use as a target when those cancer cells are almost just like your other cells.

If a cure was found, it'd probably be for a particular type of cancer, and then maybe only applicable to a subset of the population.

Well, the only cause of cervical cancer is HPV and they came out a vaccine for most forms of HPV. Nobody sat on that. There are other groups that research cancer other than just pharamceutical companies.

On the other hand I did once see stuff about how it was discovered that some drug made for something else might also have cancer fighting properties. Since the drug was so simple it couldn't be patented pharmaceutical companies weren't interested in putting in the money to get it approved for cancer treatment by the FDA.

The thing is though, if a drug has already been approved by the FDA, doctors are allowed to prescribe it for other things that have been shown in studies to improve those other things, and it doesn't have to go through FDA approval a second time.

Oh it's even better... each PERSON's cancer is a unique disease in many ways. Different genetic backgrounds to begin with, and tumours mutate and evolve right inside your body. I think science is doing amazingly well when you consider those facts.

Also.. goatkcd? Hahahahahaha amazing! [LIKE]

Sigh... another "Big Pharma! Herp Derp!" thread...
Some guy was telling me about a fruit that cures cancer but Big Pharma stopped studying it when they couldn't synthesize it. That's not how it works, so I looked up this "amazing fruit." No study proves it cures cancer, but studies DO prove it causes Parkinson's. And it's being sold for $10 a capsule.

I hope I'm misunderstanding that.

No, I'm pissed because if the test had come back positive, thats literally the first I would have heard about it.

Yeah, I was a bit angry when my mom told me she had cancer, because they had not told me about the possibility earlier. After years of treatment, worry, and heartache, I realize that the few extra weeks of relative peace she gave me were a blessing.

If there's something you would have done had you known she was having the biopsy done, go do that now. No use in waiting for a diagnosis.

Damn it's dusty in here. Probably doesn't help that the wife had her second colonoscopy in three months today. They found several polyps last time that were one step below cancerous. No recurring polyps this time. They took tissue samples from her intestine for biopsy and pathologist's exam. We won't know for at least a week.

/so I can relate .

I used to think they probably had something hidden away because "omg if we cure X we'll be out of business in three years!" but then I remembered that they can't see past next month's sale report.

Plus, um, curing cancer wouldn't mean that no one would ever get cancer again. It'sn ot like erradicating smallpox.

This. My cardiologist told me once that magnesium in the right dosages/formula has the potential to be a cheap, effective arrythmia treatment/controller, but Big Pharm saw the cheap part and only one study has been done on it so far.

My thoughts go out to you and your grandmother. I lost mine to cervical cancer on Feb. 24th after a three year battle. She was diagnosed at stage 4 and told she had six months. She fought like hell right to the end.

Thanks, but she was very lucky. She was going in for GI surgery and the imaging they did to prepare found the tiny tumor in her breast. It was a month or so after this year's mammogram.
