Langston: As a soccer fan who likes the MLS, this seems like too fast an expansion. I hope I'm wrong. When I think of "rabid fan base", I don't think of Florida.
wambu: This same group is actively promoting a major league basketball team for Virginia Beach, VA.
great_tigers: I would think that if government money is going to used to fund a professional sports stadium and team then profit sharing on top of taxes should go back to the community. Repaying the hundreds of millions of dollars would also be acceptable.
drunk_bouncnbaloruber: I hear they're about to have two minor league soccer teams, one in the NASL (already there) and another in the lower USL, which will play in this one. The MLS would be better off playing in the soccer-starved St. Louis area (look up that city's history with the sport) than going for uncertainty in Tampa again.
shadowdweller: When you have trouble filling NFL stadiums and struggle to have a full house for a championship-winning basketball team, you may want to think hard before building a soccer stadium
Igor Jakovsky: Also subs, the government didnt pay 600 mil for that stadium. IIRC 300 mil was put up by the ownership group. The remaining half was paid by a combination of a bond issue and tourist tax dollars. The tourist tax dollars have to be spent on something that is touristy. It cant be used for schools, social programs etc. That was always a complaint from people (why are millions of tax dollars being spent on a stadium, when Miami-Dade schools suck) well because it cant be spent on education.Im not saying Miami didnt get fleeced by these guys in some ways, especially regarding the product that was supposed to be put on the field, But Miami didnt pay $600 mil for it either.
Igor Jakovsky: That will draw less fans than the marlins do. I used to live in tampa and never once did I ever hear of anyone clamoring for a soccer team. The rays cant even get anyone to go to their games despite being a pretty good team with a good front office.
Prey4reign: It's football you inbred Yankees!
Devo: [i47.tinypic.com image 248x250]This team was awesome in the early eighties.
