Rooting for a sniper to take out an MLS referee.

Rooting for a mighty sellout crowd of 27,000.

MLS averaged 18,800 fans per game this year making it one of the top 10 leagues in the world in average attendance. It's the highest attendance ever for a domestic soccer league.

I'm guessing attendance. Doesn't really make sense the way it's written though.

Hopefully this isn't the last game for another Galaxy player. Landon's been revving up the "I want a break" pseudo-retirement talk, so I hope he doesn't hang them up as well. He's still got some years left in him I hope.

So, it's like 3 people a game if you factor out the Timbers ans Sounders?

(Not bagging on the rest of the league, but the PNW crowds look and sound like Euro stadia.)

Attendance. Mostly because in Europe, the serious money is made from shirt deals and TV, not so much through the gate butts in the seat. Many top flight teams play in front of crowds from 20,000 to 40,000; an average top conference college USA football game is regularly more attended than most top flight soccer leagues in the world. For every Barcelona or Manchester United, there are dozens of Tottenhams and Chelseas, not to mention Reddings and Queens Park Rangers.

They play in a bunch of stadiums that make Fenway Park and Wrigley Field look massive, many of the worlds teams. Many are just about as old.

So Seattle and our 43,000 average in MLS looks pretty huge to the rest of the world, the rest of the world is not used to seeing State U fill a 60,000 to 100,000 seat stadium, to say nothing of the NFL regularly draw 60,000 plus to most cities.

Still.

For Soccer, for America, for the economy being bad and all the rest, its fairly impressive.

The Northwest (Seattle, Vancouver BC, Portland) led the way, and even San Jose playing in Stanford Stadium vs. LA Gals was a pretty big deal, 50,000 to that one. Seattle had over 50,000 four times.

This soccer thing could stick around if we aren't careful.

On the other hand, New York regularly draws under 20,000; LA Galaxy losing Beckham will probably mean they quit drawing 27,0000; and quite a few MLS cities are lodged firmly in the 10,000 to 14,000 a game level. Nothing screams "give us a big new TV deal" like drawing less than the local NBA team.

I guess you haven't watched much MLS. The median is about 18 k as well. KC, Salt Lake City, Vancouver, Montreal, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, New York and Toronto all averaged over 18,000 per game.

2012-12-01 04:21:06 PM
And I should add, MLS is permanently going to be capping its attendance in the 20,000 range, as team (KC, Portland, Houston, Montreal) after team all build these fandangled "Soccer Specific Stadiums." They're great if you're one of the lucky 20,000, and they ensure a raucous sellout crowd and great support. Or at least help great support be possible if the area has any to give in the first place.

But they absolutely will ensure that Seattle will keep dragging the rest of the league around by attendance, since our "Soccer Specific Stadium" designed to accommodate both soccer and NFL when it was built, holds double or triple what any other regular venue in this league holds.

Which sucks for revenue sharing; we kick in more dollars to float the league, who then turns around and enables LA to get the best ex-english stars. MLS free agency rules are more "who the commish wants LA or NY to have" than based on any actual fairness or accountable system.

I'll see your unknown amount of Allocation Money and I'll raise you a pick in the Super Draft plus two Generation Addidas picks and how about a trade for top spot in the next Allocation Draft.

But you don't factor out the Sounders because the Sounders exist. Also, the league average is 18,800. Eleven teams average 18K plus. The sounders throw the average but not THAT much. The Timbers, Galaxy, Dynamo, and Impact all aver 20K plus (The Timbers would likely average much more if not for stadium limitations). Only the Crew, Dallas, Revs, United, Quakes, and Chivas get less than 15K.

What's the stadium capacity in Columbus? I figured the Crew would get higher attendance because it's a huge college town with minimal professional sport options.

Wiki says Crew Stadium holds 20k+. I dunno. I thought they had a good fanbase up there.

Generation_D: holds double or triple what any other regular venue in this league holds.

Excepting BC Place, who has basically the same setup though usually tarps off more than the Sounders do. And Gillette (not that the Revs don't need to move). And RFK (not that anyone is dumb enough to want to re-open the unmaintained raccoon-habitat that is the upper levels).

Becks looks bad so far. The HOU midfield is beating him up. But, w/o Becks we don't get Keane, which is what's important.

Hey, we stood up there for the 2009 US Cup final..... avoiding pigeon poop and raccoon families. Was kind of awesome.

I think they're more worried about worldwide audience numbers than US, which is kind of sad. Honestly, is anyone outside a US military base showing the SEC game?

Been switching between this match and the SEC football championship. Thus far, MLS has been more entertaining. Not by a huge margin, but certainly.

2012-12-01 06:33:18 PM
The refs waved off two LA goals, one of them was clearly offsides, but one could have been allowed without raising any eyebrows. Are you really suggesting that the PK wasn't justified by a handball in the box?

Two weeks, which is too long. They need to figure out their season better, this December crap is stupid.

Damn, Keane did everything right, and didn't score.
