The thing that makes it seem like a 3d object is also the tell that it's fake. Depth of field tricks. They did a cool job of making the 2d object look like it has parts that are sharply focused and softly focused, but when the camera pulls back you see the focus depth on the object doesn't change while all of the background is sharply in focus. Sometimes when they're zoomed on the 'object' they even rack the focus a couple of times to add to the illusion of focusing on a 3d object.

The whole illusion is very well done here. A nice new take on a very old idea. Good find, subby.

You couldn't just link to youtube? Even with all scripts enabled, I couldn't get the imbedded youtube video to show up, so I had to go search for it.

The sneaker in the overview shot is at a different angle. Was it real then?

Stantz: Wow. That guy has an awesome printer

Seriously. It appears that he photoshopped the image into that false perspective (using simple right angle triangle math) and printed it out. The illusion is well done, producing the focusing illusions takes care, but it's not like he's done the world's best trompe-l'œil in acrylics.

Bladel: The sneaker in the overview shot is at a different angle. Was it real then?

That's because that's the real shoe he photographed to produce the forced perspective print. Notice the prints match the lighting of the scene exactly? Well, that's because he used the exact lighting of the scene. You'll also notice the real roll of tape and the rubik's cube up against the wall. Nice scissorwork, mind you.

He faked depth of field on the Rubik's cube! No fair!

I especially liked the ad on the sidebar offering to tell me what 37 things I must hoard for the upcoming apocalypse. I thought that the very nature of the end of the world meant that hoarding things was unnecessary, since the "world" includes all that hoarded crap and the hoarder, too.

I have this on my website.
Please excuse the site itself, I have not updated it for a few years. I really need a professional to redo it for me.

When you go to the page, it will have a PDF File you can download and print to make the Dragon.

Good link.

The tricky part for me was getting the head folded right. I'm thinking the instructions seemed pretty clear still it was hard to grasp the concept of folding the head concave.

I have not updated it in over 5 years. I need to redo it from scratch. I used Webstudio to make it originally. I need to make it more functional for my Hypnosis business.

Bladel: The sneaker in the overview shot is at a different angle. Was it real then?

Yup, as were the other objects in that shot. They look real in the shot coming up to the desk because they are. Then it fades to a different shot and we see his flat photos illusions. It's part of what makes the illusion work so well. Though, IMO, it's cheating.

Spoiler: If it's on a sheet of paper, it's fake.
