While we're on the subject of Super Mario 2, I'm going to go on record and say that I really do love that game. The Mario purists hate it because it's so different from the others, but f*ck those fools, SMB2 is a classic.

In fact, I'ma play it right now.

Vaneshi: It's also fascinating because SMB2 in Japan was a balls out precision platformer that was deemed 'too difficult' for the Western audience. So they reskinned another game (Doki Doki something or other) as SMB2.

The reason why it was so different is that it wasn't actually a Mario game. But it was that reskin which most modern Mario games are descended from.


Doki Doki Panic was created by Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo's EAD group, so the reason they pulled a lot of design cues features from it into SMB3 and onward is because all the same people were involved in its creation; it wasn't some random game off the street that they decided to turn into SMB2.

I remember whenever my parents and my siblings and I were completely stuck on a video game, they'd call the coolest babysitter in the world to watch us for an evening and beat the hard levels.

First, he was a guy named John at a time when nobody had ever even heard of a male babysitter. Second, he had bleached hair, piercings and dressed like he'd escaped from one of the music videos with ladies writhing on top of cars in them. (This was despite perfect grades and manners so impeccable he called every female adult 'Ma'am' and every girl 'Miss' and her first name. His parents were friends of mine and they explained that the wardrobe choices and whatnot were privileges in exchange for good behavior.)

And third, he was simply the most exciting human ever to be. He made chainmail. He owned a broadsword. And he could beat every Super Nintendo game in the world, as well as all the Sega ones, and when he got one of the first Playstations, he brought it with him and taught us to play as well. He was the sort of guy that tiny-me would have had a crush on, if I were old enough to reasonably have crushes. (To be fair, I still have a ridiculous thing for chainmail-making, broadsword-owning gamer guys.)

Being ten years old, I was only allowed to make money by raking leaves, shoveling snow and other miscellaneous kid crap. This was around the same time my school did a magazine-subscription sale as a fundraiser, and my little brother and sister and I decided, with infallibly bad kid logic, that what we would do was raise the impossible sum (it was probably something like $20,) and get John a subscription to 'Nintendo Power' for Christmas. We shoveled snow. We mowed lawns. We raked leaves and I overcame my terror of dogs long enough to walk the neighbors' demon-possessed Pomeranian for three days when they went on vacation. At last, the great day came, and we asked our Mom to accept our jar of change and bills in exchange for a check to get John his magazine. With the rest of the money, we bought her a large chocolate bar.

I have no idea if 'Nintendo Power' was a good gift or not, now that I think about it. The Playstation came out within a year or so, as well as the Dreamcast and a bunch of other, better systems, and John eventually got another job that meant he had less and less time for us, but even if it was a hopelessly out-of-style or uncool thing for us to have given him, he acted like we were awesome for thinking of it, let alone raising the money all by ourselves.

He thanked us with big hugs and a piggyback ride each, then gave us our present -a Super Nintendo game cartridge each. Never mind that they were functionally pretty much hand-me-downs from a bigger kid (I think he was sixteen or so,) to a smaller one, it was a wonderfully kind gesture that I've never forgotten. I still have a working SNES and that 'Mystic Quest' cartridge. And there were times he'd bring the latest issue to our house and refer to the tips section, or, more typically, have my baby sister practice her reading-out-loud while he followed her instructions with the controller. I still have happy memories from that time.

John is apparently a radiologist somewhere now, and I'm a grownup who hasn't bought a console game since college. 'Nintendo Power's passing is just another piece of my childhood slipping away. I wonder which of the walkthrough-and-tips websites I'll be referring to, or whether there will be a cool gamer of a neighbor kid to be a level-beating hero to my first kid.

I wonder if it'd be appropriate to test a prospective sitter with 'Battletoads.'

I remember calling the Nintendo customer service line like every week to ask when the 64DD was going to come out, so I could play some sweet sweet Earthbound 2.

It never came out in the US.

Oh, and I was like 16 at the time. Yeah, I was an awkward teen.

Seeing all the Dragon Warrior love here just makes me so happy. I talk to others about my love for the game series and I just get blank stares.

My absolute favorite Christmas was when I got my copy of Dragon Warrior 2. I think it's my favorite of the whole series.

I came super-close to destroying one of my controllers over Battletoads.

I hate, hate, hate, hate, HATE that game.


But apparently love FF6.

Despite me being a video game nerd worthy of a neckbeard of kings, I was too poor growing up to buy Nintendo power, and hooked up to the internet since 1996. Thus, aside from a piece of gaming history, it's finale means little to me.

It's pretty interesting that aside from the babysitter story, I can relate to pretty much every other one in the thread though. Or terrifying. But was fun reading.

Bippal: I called the power line once for final fantasy mystic quest as a kid. There was a dungeon puzzle that you had to move this pillar to move across a gap and walk across, leave the map and move back to the other exit and cross. You just have no way of knowing that it doesn't reset like the other zones in the game. It was a 900 number at that point and we was poor as fark but my parents were really cool about it and let me call.


The only time I called was when I had finished Matroid 2 on Game Boy. Climb out of the caverns and there is... nothing. There was a big wall to the left and, after some running, a big wall to the right. I knew there had to be something, and I couldn't risk turning off the system. I finally was able to convince my Mom to let me call and the solution was to space jump over the right wall. There wasn't really any clues that would make you think to try that

RsquaredW: I wish I'd actually gone to the effort of tearing the Zelda:LTTP comic out of the collection I had (I only kept the comics issues, in order, for a dozen years). The comic was pretty damn awesome.

I had no idea you could wall jump in the game until the magazine told me, it seemed to open up a whole new verticality in a video game that i never realized or played in any other game before - IT WAS AWESOME. I even learned how to save the little animals on your way out as the planet is exploding from Nintendo Power. Seeing their ship barely escape the explosion was a rewarding easter egg to me as a little kid who really liked animals.

Oh and the Purple Haired Samus and Mario / Wario comics inside didn't hurt either! I read those comics more than anything by DC / Marvel when i was growing up.

Why? Did you especially like spending 30 - 40 hours killing blobs for 1 gold and 2 experience? That was my least favorite RPG of all time, because the play sucked so hard. Which was a shame, because it was a solid storyline.


The Super Famicom remake -- which has been unofficially translated into English (two translations are available; one retains the Japanese names while the other uses the names from the official English localization) -- substantially increases experience and monetary rewards from monsters and thus greatly reduces "grinding".

Without that magazine, It would have taken 4-5 times longer to beat FF1 & Metroid, I'd have missed out on a lot in SMB2, StarTropics, Crystalis, Castlevania 3, etc. and I never would have beaten Battletoads.

In fact, even though I'm 35 now, beating Battletoads still probably qualifies as a Top 5 Lifetime Achievement. Thank you, Nintendo Power.

/ also would have spent a shiatton of Christmas gifts on crappy games with slick marketing, instead of on good games that I enjoyed playing. The previews that it gave really helped with that

Anyone else remember back in the day Nintendo ran a free tips line? Since there was no Internet, if you got stuck and couldn't figure out how to solve a problem in a game, you were either stuck until you ran across someone in real life who knew the solution, or you could call Nintendo and they'd help you through. I remember at the time it was free to call, and considered revolutionary.

He can. I can't think of a single scenario where his jumping ability is a requirement, though. I prefer to play as the Princess as well just because of the control her hovering gives you. Helps on that damn ice level with the flying shy guys. Luigi is a nightmare to control on ice.

One of my best Christman morning memories is opening SMB2, that year when it was new... whatever year that was. It will always be my favorite SMB, not just for that memory, but for all the weirdness and gameplay.
