Seriously? You can tell the difference by feel, without even looking at them. The diameter, weight, thickness, edge, and both surfaces are different. They are quite literally NOTHING like each other.

How bout you write a big stupid "1" on it, change the color, straighten the edges into a hex or octagon, stamp a hole in it, use two colors, stop the stupid state quarters thing, or do anything other countries have done successfully. I don't know why the US has to pioneer everything. It's been done, dipshiats.

That article fails to consider that paper money wears out faster than coin money. While paper money costs less to make, the fact remains that the "same" dollar is made many, many times over in paper money. In fact, paper money is regularly taken out of circulation to "refresh" the condition of the bills held by the public.

That's where the savings come in. Coins require far less "refreshing". As far as the cost of a single unit of currency, it's probably a wash between coin and paper money... consider that goes into producing money, from security to the features embedded into today's cash - that's the bulk of the cost of paper money, and more than offsets the cost of producing the same currency in coinage.

What is grating is the idiotic argument that "Americans can't tell the difference between a dollar coin and a quarter" - we aren't retarded. The difference is every bit as large as between a nickel and a quarter, or a dime... they are different sizes and weights. Any politician arguing this nonsense needs to be lined up against a wall and shot for crimes against his constituency.

That article also makes a nonsense argument around the idea of a "coin jar" - apparently we all have them, and we'll horde dollar coins by the billions. Sure. Whatever, moran article writer.
