Good for him. Pretty sure the restaurant is going to be sorry in a year when everyone forgets about that song and they're still named something that is nonsensical.

Given that restaurants fail more often than not anyway, I don't think it matters.

It's funny a couple years ago when I was watching a YG special with all the artists, I saw this older, chubby guy on stage with the rest of them. Had no idea he was actually a performer at first. Thought he was a manager or something. Always seemed like a cool guy so I'm not surprised he doesn't care about this. Glad to see he has international success, but funny that it's with a song he pretty much did as a joke.

You can't copyright a name. I could open a whole chain of restaurants with the Gangnam Style name and there is nothing anyone could do unless the name was trademarked.

Dingleberry Dickwad: Transformers Gangnam Style just because

Well, my childhood has been destroyed.

BTW - I'm surprised to see all the Gen 1 autobots in that video... even the semi-obscure ones like Jetfire and Elita One.

I finally got around to watching the Gagnam Style video a couple of weeks ago, I was amused. Psy is a pretty funny dude. Although isn't the Gagnam Style dance basically just horse stance from Tae Kwon Do with some wiggling thrown in?

I dunno, I thought it was pretty hilarious. I liked Megatron dancing on top of Starscream, and hipthrusting over a broken looking Shockwave.

Skarekrough: Media companies being what they are, does he even have any control over the phrase, dance, song or related media?

Yes, he does. The thing is, Psy has basically told people to go forth and remix. Now, this might seem crazy, but the thing with any sort of IP is that controlling it costs money, letting it loose means more people hear about it.

It's what the vultures can't grasp. They see every copy as a lost sale, rather than a potential advert for the product. So, they'd look at Gangnam Style and say "what, you've given that song away 800m times and only sold 4 million copies?". Which ignores the fact that if only half a million people had seen it, the most you could have sold is half a million copies.

2012-11-30 12:46:28 PM
The popularity of the song rides on it's goofiness and self-deprecation. If PSY sues some pissant small business owner it would ruin his image. It's not worth it, particularly since the song is on the last couple of minutes of it's 15.

yeah, pretty much what i didn't feel like i needed to expand on. usa is a very selfish place in that we don't care if a person is a superstar in another country. psy has 1 hit song here in the usa, mostly because it IS a joke-type song that is very cheesy yet fun. he MAY have the possibility of 1 or 2 other songs getting recognition here, but chances are he's going to become a has-been in the usa by spring 2013.

theorellior: Although isn't the Gagnam Style dance basically just horse stance from Tae Kwon Do with some wiggling thrown in?

No. It isn't anything stance. It's a chubby dude in a prom suit from an '80s high-school romantic comedy pantomiming riding a horse. There is absolutely not a goddamned whit more to it than that, and that's why it's fun.

Skarekrough: Media companies being what they are, does he even have any control over the phrase, dance, song or related media?

He may not give a fark because it wouldn't matter anyway.

He still has default author copyright at minimum, probably sole ownership or close to given how he normally publishes. He just doesn't care, because viral is how he makes his money, for every 100 people that knows who he is, one buys an actual album, so he's better off letting people do whatever and getting a couple million people to learn his name a day than he is being an ass and making every person that listens pay for it (meaning that people only get the branding if they happen to be a friend of that 1/100 that bought it... those factors of ten attenuate fast).
