He wants to be the defensive coordinator for Jon Gruden when he's hired in Philly.

After the way Monte checked out on Gruden after getting the job in Tennessee I doubt that those two will ever coach together again.

If one were so inclined, you could argue that Monte effectively tanking the last four games of the 2008 Bucs season cost Gruden his job there. That wasn't the only thing, but had they made the playoffs I doubt the Glazers would have fired him. Even though Gruden has made the best of it, I seriously doubt he'll choose to work with Monte again.

Also saves him the awkwardness of getting fired by his son.

Yeah, the ole Tampa 2 doesn't really cover the new spread offenses that well.

He was already the Vols' defensive coordinator when Lane was coach for ten minutes, so I doubt that will happen.

Yes, I am holding out hope about the next coach of the Vols.

I always love how every time a coaching job comes open at an above average college program that Gruden's name comes up. HE'S NOT GOING THERE. GET OVER IT!

Exactly. If Jon Gruden wanted to be a college coach, he'd be one by now.

I really doubt Gruden will come to UT, but there are some elements driving that rumor, mainly that Gruden was once a graduate assistant at UT, which is where he met his wife, whose family still lives in the area and he is frequently there. I think he genuinely likes UT and the fans and doesn't want to hurt any feelings, but his heart and passion are the NFL.

USC probably has the best WR tandem in the country, and they're virtually wasted because of an underperforming offensive line and an atrocious defense.

The only CFB coaching job Gruden might take is ND. And since that job isn't open....

/Jon - come back to the Raiders

Honestly, the arrogance of most major collegiate athletic departments is quite fascinating. I bet you there's at least ten schools right now needing a coach that truly think they have a shot at Jim Harbaugh or Nick Saban.

You could also argue that Monte Kiffin was the sole reason Gruden lasted as long as he did. Gruden, the "offensive genius" NEVER had a top ten offense. Kiffin's defense was the only thing that held that team together.

Without Monte Kiffin, Jon Gruden is just another Gene Chizik.

This is how this conversation went down:

USC AD: "Hey Lane, I hate to have to put you in this position, but either your dad "resigns" or we sack you and your entire staff."

Kiffin: "You'll have my dad's letter of resignation in ten minutes."

I imagine you think other coaches handle both sides of the ball? I suppose you've also forgotten that Gruden took over a 4-12 Raiders team, won 8 games the next year with Donald Hollas and Jeff George playing QB, then won 12 games two years later and
very possibly could have gotten the Raiders to the Super Bowl had Tony Siragusa not body-slammed Rich Gannon into the turf in the AFC championship game. The following year they were a tuck rule away from another AFC championship game.

I assume you mean with the Bucs, because he had a few top-10 offenses with Oakland.

And what did he do with the Bucs? After winning the Super Bowl because of a nasty defense that Tony Dungy and Kiffin built, he dragged the team downward. Consistently signed over-the-hill veterans like Charlie Garner or Jeff Garcia, drafted horribly, misused what offensive tools he did have; just a complete mess of an offense. Which is crazy, considering he constantly talked about how many eighteen hour days he worked. What the hell was he doing?

The thought of him coaching in college is laughable. He doesn't have the patience to coach a third-year pro quarterback, what the hell is he going to do with an 18 year-old freshman?

Memorizing jargon and having a pretty cool scowl does not make you one of the best coaches available.

They traded a number of draft picks to bring Gruden in as coach, which hindered their ability to build inexpensive depth. Rich McKay handled their football operations and they ended up in salary cap hell after winning the Super Bowl. Then when the Bucs actually did have room under the cap, Malcolm Glazer spent all his money on Manchester United while Tampa was millions under the cap.

UT fan, and I'm not necessarily upset that gruden isn't coming, I'm annoyed by the media circus around it. On the other hand, there can't be enough bad things to happen to the kiffins. I hope they get everything that is coming to them.

Be glad we're still relevant enough that there is a media circus and that people take rumors about high profile coaches seriously when talking about us.

Living in Memphis I've heard a lot about this Gruden thing on the radio, but did Vols fans really think he was coming to UT?

Monte Kiffin is resigning? How will Lane get another job without his dad providing the only value in the transaction? He can't oversell Ed Orgeron.
