For the life of me I cannot understand why deer hunting season doesn't last half the year across the US. We've eradicated most of their natural predators and replaced them with automobiles. Herds need to be thinned - may as well let the hunters do it more often, at least until we get their numbers low enough that they aren't a line item on car insurance claim forms.

The thing is the heards are managed to the right size. It's just that some areas will always have an overlap between man and animal.

I get that, but I have an inherent bias against deer since I've ruined two cars hitting them over 20 years. In a normal environment, they'd serve as food for predators, but since we got rid of those, what purpose are deer serving in the US today? If someone knows, please tell me. Otherwise, they're pretty high on the nuisance level. I can't believe we're keeping them around just for the hunters. Do they still serve a purpose in the ecosystem or not?

And I'll just throw this out there now: I have a strong bias against bugs and turkey vultures, so don't use either of those to justify deer. I also hate pigeons and believe that they should be eradicated along with deer, because deer are just pigeons with four legs and more weight behind them. And mice. Is there any goddamn reason mice are still around? Horrible animals.

Basically, I'd like all of nature to bend to my convenience. I realize this is unrealistic, but if some of you farkers have an explanation of why deer are important, that might mitigate my rage a bit. Thanks in advance.

Because they actually help reduce underbrush,, foliage and growth of plants.... Which would likely over grow- dry up and start massive amounts of wildfires

You really can't take one animal out if the ecosystem without some adverse effect. We hunted several predetor species to extinction because they were competitors for food source. We also were trying to protect ourselves because WE were also a food source when we killed off their natural prey

If you are not in a city- you are the one who is in their territory.

So suck it up ;)

I'm eating jalapeno deer sausage right now. I've hit 3 of those bastards in the last 2 years. Hit one years ago that when I hit it, the legs went straight up in the air. If it had been a small car, it probably would have gone through the windshield.

I live in WV and have many acquaintances in the DNR.

If it wasn't for the poachers, we'd be completely farked in this state. Even they aren't making too much of a dent.

The herds are NOT managed to a proper size. Take a trip from Morgantown to Charleston. I did it yesterday. I stopped counting at 115 dead deer by the road and I still had 40 miles to go.

I can't speak for other states, but the deer are out of control in Appalachia.

The problem is really that the herds are "managed" by allowing buck hunting only. (as far as I know--hunters feel free to correct me) As we learned in the past, killing females is what controls the populations, and it used to be that doe hunting was not allowed, or very strictly limited.

Allow a larger number of female deer/elk/moose/whatever to be taken, and you'll see a dramatic drop in numbers in a fairly short time.

Yeah - not a good argument for deer. Try again.

Actually, what the hell do you do besides post on Fark? Are you worth anything in the ecosystem?

That's bullshiat. I'm in farm country. The vegetation that provides a diet for deer still exists, but wolves, wild dogs, foxes, bobcats, and pumas no longer exist. It's human territory, not deer.

So we should kill them. Nothing else will.

Hold your horses Lsherm. Besides posting on Fark, I ship flower seed to Holland, train my 4000 employees, and watch TV. But am I worth anything to the ecosystem? Hell no. A glass bottle is many steps above my worth to the ecosystem. How about you? Do you provide value to the ecosystem?

Well, I apparently provide two deer every decade for consumption, which is more than you're doing. More importantly, I'm not arguing that people need to be thinned as opposed to herd animals.

You've admitted yourself worthless, which is ballsy and fair. The deer you refuse to kill don't plot against you because they aren't smart enough, but I doubt when they kill you that you're smart enough to realize it. You and your "4000" employees will just enjoy your product and watch the world fall down around you.

But I'll be farking killing the goddamn deer,

No Time To Explain: /as a driver and motorcyclist, a fear the day a deer gets out and wants to touch me

I was riding somewhere in Georgia when a deer decided to flake out on me. Thankfully, there was just enough time to scrub some speed (was doing about 60 in a 55, so not being particularly reckless), maneuver, and avoid death. But the bastard still managed to clip my elbow somehow. Thank god for armored jackets.

Needless to say, I was disappointed that no underwear stores were open at that hour. I'm not kidding.

I actually pissed myself.

Calmed down, lit a cigarette, and called my mom to tell her I loved her.

Looks like the problem is that you got an engine inside your deer here and that's why the car won't start.
