In the book, Gimli came to Rivendell in the first place because they haven't heard from Balin, and they are very worried, so it would have made more sense.

Gimli and his father Glóin came to Rivendell on account of the the threat-laced demands of the "horseman in the night" from Mordor. They wanted to warn Bilbo there was an APB out for him, and sought council on how to deal with the gathering threats. They hadn't heard from Balin for nearly 30 years by the time of the Council of Rivendell, but already probably suspected the worst- that Balin's party had been felled by the same dreaded enemy that that had been awoken long before ("Too deep we delved there, and woke the nameless fear." -Glóin) Dáin hadn't approved Balin's expedition, for this very reason, but Balin and others had went anyway. (FotR, pp. 316-317)

Gimli was interested in going once Gandalf suggested it (pp. 386-387) after they had already tried to get past Caradhras, but he wasn't unaware of the severe danger.
