Desperation? The LOTR movies are going to be fueling New Zealand tourism for decades. I know people who have barely ever left their own state talking about how beautiful NZ looks and how they'd like to go there. These movies have been the best advertisement for NZ that could possibly have been created. Tourism is a major industry and by going over the top they're adding to the country's publicity, it's just good business. It's as much advertising as a TV ad talking about NZ's beach resorts would be.

Me, on the other hand...well, we now know that Maori should probably not be cosplaying as Legolas. (Besides, hakas are more cool. :D)

As it is, even before the LOTR movies came out, I did have a mental image of New Zealand as being something resembling an area from Lord Of The Rings as a kid--specifically Hobbiton. (Radio New Zealand's international broadcasts helped a lot in this regard--giving the general impression the entirety of the country was basically a giant idyllic not-quite-British countryside.)

Then I discovered the New Zealand All Blacks and international rugby :D

/do still tend to think of New Zealand as "Australia's Canada" (as in the more civilised, laid-back, understated and polite neighbour) :D
