"They're shiatty"

2012-11-29 12:44:51 PM
Well, I got news for him. Cleveland ain't Chicago, the Indians aren't the Cubs, and Progressive Field isn't Wrigley. If he wants people to come to the games because of a "charming experience" or some such sh*t, then he needs to go be GM somewhere else.

2012-11-29 01:07:02 PM
Well, if that was followed up by "Our farm system is up and coming and we will be good" he might have gotten away with it.

What's that? Jason Kipins sucks? And we traded away our future pitching on a God awful ridiculous deal for Ubaldo Jimenez? How about that Lonnie Chisenhall kid? Oh he sucks too?

Welp, time to start rebuilding again.

Is he trying to move the team to Miami and get a fully funded tax payer stadium for a crappy team made up of low-cost players?

/it'd never work

When I was a kid I wanted to go to an Indians game so badly. Always seemed like a great place to see a game.

Eh, in Detroits 119 loss season, I still went to like 15 or 20 games. The team may suck, they may lose vastly more than they win, but it's still pretty awesome to be outside on a warm summer night watching baseball, drinking beer, and hanging out with your friends.

Plus, if they suck, tickets are cheap.

But we are always going to have cycles to when we can win.

Can you imagine a Steinbrenner saying that? He'd be saying 'I expect to win the AL Pennant every year. If we don't, i'll fire the coach and i'll replace the players until we do.'

Which is good if you go like five times tops to the home games... Not so much if you are a season ticket holder like the guy shapiro was replying to.

And beyond the social aspect of "going out to the ball game", even top teams lose a third or more of their games (108-54). I'm pretty sure the fan meant 'make the post-season' when he said 'win', but unless this guy doesn't work daytime hours, he may well sit through more Ls than Ws. As for the GM, when you can't spend $200M, you have to hope your fans come out even when the guys you did pay don't work out as well as you'd expected. But at least try to frame it a little better...

GAT_00: What's that? Jason Kipins sucks?

You're....giving up on Jason Kipnis already? Dude had a terrible 2nd half but still had a 3.1 WAR in his first full season.

2012-11-29 03:11:37 PM
As Bill Veeck once said, there is no promotional substitute for winning. Have all the fan outreach and givaways you want; if the team is shiatty, well, no, the fans AREN'T going to come. You want butts in the seats? Start winning. Those are not all nostalgic sepia-toned diehards in the stands and they're not all willing to watch you lose just because it's a nice sunny summer day out.

Shapiro literally does not know the first thing about promoting your team.

2012-11-29 03:19:37 PM
That's the Royals strategy. They think Kansas City has 40,000 people who want to drop serious $ to hang out at the cool stadium.

2012-11-29 03:21:57 PM
I was going to give him the benefit of the doubt but that was really stupid of him to say... He'd have been better off, stone-cold lying and saying that he fully expects the Tribe to win the World Series.

Cleveland fans have eternal hope against perpetual doom. To remove that hope,... there is simply nothing left to be there for.

2012-11-29 03:22:23 PM

Actually tickets to the K can be cheaper then a movie ticket.

Yeah, seriously. That should've been his answer - "We're excited about some of our young players. We think that Jason Kipnis showed some promise last year, especially in the first half, and we look forward to seeing him grow in 2013." Maybe throw in something about Asdrubel Cabrera, too.

/Or he could have said "At least we're not the Marlins"

Also, I kind of get what he's saying (then again, I'm an Indians fan, so this may be me being co-dependent). I lived in Pittsburgh for a while. The Pirates were shiatty then. I still went to about 10 games a year. It was a fun night, sometimes they won, there were usually fireworks and I'm a baseball fan.

And that's the other thing. Even a lousy team still has a shot to win every game.

2012-11-29 03:46:49 PM
"Winning isn't everything".

It's true actually. In Detroit the fanbase is starting to turn on the Lions staff for the on the field penalty issues and the off the field arrests. Plus of course the debacle of decision making on Thanksgiving. I'd be happy with the older Lions teams that while helpless also weren't trying to be the Bengals 2.0.

Oh, there's gotta be better ones than that. "I think we can build a pitching staff around Ubaldo Jimenez" or "Travis Hafner should retire as an Indian" would have me running for the hills. Maybe "Since Grady Sizemore will anchor our outfield next year, we can trade Shin-soo Choo this winter" would be more terrifying, but I think the worst one would probably be "I think Matt LaPorta should get 600 PAs next year"

I don't follow them that close, but those all seem worse than "We suck and we don't expect to win very many games next year." At least the GM is facing facts.

If tickets were the only cost involved, yeah, I might be out there quite a bit. In reality, the average man is going to drop $100 there. For that kind of money, I want to see a team that has a chance of winning.

Can somebody explain to me what happened to Mark Shapiro? Just a few years ago he was one of the most highly respected executives in all of baseball, maybe in all of sports. Now he can't seem to do anything right.

There should be a pro sports-wide rule forbidding ownership of a team by anyone named Dolan, because they all seem to have the reverse Midas touch.

I know. As a fan I should love the idea of a half dozen players getting arrested for DUI in the off season while driving around town and all the other off the field behavior problems we've had crop in the Schwartz area. Why wouldn't I want pro athletes crapping where I eat?

FTFA: "That has to be a part of why you come to games," Shapiro said. "Even the best teams lose 62 times in a season. If you base your decision to come to the game on whether we win or lose, don't come. You're missing out. You're missing out on what baseball is all about, and I'm fine with that."

cold-war-mind-warp.com

We're starved for a champion. We're tired of being let down by yet another hot start followed by the team falling apart and winding up 3rd or 4th in the division. Attendance is plummeting because while the best teams lose 62 times, the Indians WIN 62 times. The fans are beat down and tired of disappointment and until you field a consistent winner, only the diehards are going to show up and pay $40 a seat to watch a dumpster fire when the East Side has enough dumpster fires you can watch for free.
