Stories like this make me glad that I don't live in an area populated enough to have bickering churches and atheist sarcasm slingers. Practice what you want on the other side of the door, be it Christmas, Ramadan, Festivus, Hanukkah, or whatever it is that Pastafarians do (mac'n'cheese night?). There's no need to publicize your religious or mock-religious crap.

Religious and Atheist whargarble will now commence below this post wherein a lot of people who are pissed off about what does/doesn't happen after you die. Too many people spend thier whole life arguing about this crap.

And I just posted, so I hate myself for being one of them.

I think they should be allowed. Their 'religion' is just as made up as the others. Fair is fair.

2012-11-29 11:00:15 AM
Excellent. Let them do it. Alongside the traditional holiday displays. Everybody wins. What's the problem, exactly?

2012-11-29 11:05:17 AM
ya know, i'm just gonna come out and say it - this isn't funny. it's not original, it's not cool, it's not edgy. you aren't mocking 'religion' anymore, you're just being an ass.

I don't care what religion you follow...or don't follow for that matter If you can't acknowledge others have a right to belief in things differently than yourself, then you are a bigger problem than the fundies. STFU and take that pasta home for dinner. Or better yet, donate it to a homeless shelter or soup kitchen. But stop being a self righteous prick.

So let them be an ass. I do agree that they are just trying to be pricks, but let them do so and everyone can point and laugh at them.

Unless they're hipster pastafarians, in which case they'll be ironically laughing at themselves too. This is West Chester. The only thing good about that town is Kildares because of how good their pull on the Guiness taps are.

That's all true but this wouldn't have occurred if the county government didn't feel inexplicably compelled to put up a "menorah and nativity scene on the courthouse lawn".

Usually, I'd roll my eyes at the Pastafarians here, but TFA: Commissioners have denied similar requests from an atheist group to place a "Tree of Knowledge" in the display.

Yeah, the county drew first blood here.

As an atheist I'm curious to find out......why do other atheists (or similar non-religious individuals) care if a city/town puts up a Nativity scene or Menorah or a giant Sandra Lee Kwanzaa cake in front of a municipal building? I don't get it. It seems like such a stupid thing to waste time getting angry about. I could see getting upset if the town mandated that all homes must put a religious display in their front lawns, but if it's not even on your property, how is that a personal affront?

Well, it is on my property, technically. I don't waste any time or effort, except for posting on Fark and voting. I'll vote against any politician that plays favorites for specific religions as it demonstrates, IMHO, a basic misunderstanding of liberal government.

This is why the government shouldn't have religious displays. The government can't decide which religions are "legitimate," so they either have to honor EVERY SINGLE ONE or none at all.

"None at all" should be okay...unless your faith is so weak that you MUST have it reinforced on city/county/state/federal property.

They aren't petitioning to remove the other displays, just that their display be included. There's nothing assholish about this, unless you consider all of athiesm to be inherently assholes because they don't follow your religion.

They're assholes because they want to put their tree next to the other displays?

They're not saying EVERY TREE MUST BE REMOVED KEEP YOUR JESUS AWAY FROM ME. They're asking to put up a (funny looking) tree next to a display which according to TFA currently consists of a menorah and a nativity.

They lost the war before they called it a war.

The moment they tied in Christmas to capitalism, it was over.

Oh, they tried to reclaim it.

I remember hearing "They shouldn't use Christmas to sell stuff" in the 80's. Then in the 90's, the outrage was "They're saying 'Happy Holidays' instead of 'Merry Christmas'".

Make up your damned mind.

Accept there are two celebrations in America that use the word Christmas. One is largely secular, one is religious, and while the two overlap somewhat, they have become rather distinct in the last few decades.

Whatever it is, Taxbongo did it. It obviously must be part of his secret Muslin Atheist Communist Marxist Socialist agenda to end Christmas forever and destroy Jesus.

As soon as organized religion stops their people from being assholes with government backing, then the atheists can be asked to do the same.

Let us know when atheists start making public policy.

They're just joining in the festivities. I don't know why you're interpreting "hey, the city is having a bunch of random clubs put up decorative displays... hey, we're a random club, let's do one too!" as being 'angry'. If anything, they're getting into the spirit of the state holiday.

They're doing it because it's fun, and it's free advertising for their club. Why are you hating on their club just because it's non-religious and has a sense of humor? Sounds like you're the one with an "anger" problem here, thin-skin.

Ironic post is ironic.

Saying "display my tree" in no way says others don't have a right to display their tree.

Nor is it a bigger problem than fundies who want to deny marriage rights to others and teach religion in science class.

The Church of Flying Spaghetti Monster is a joke group created to make fun of religions. No member truly believes in what the "Church" teaches. It's just a group of people being snarky. It makes atheists look like assholes instead of people who don't believe in God and live their life in peace. As an atheist, I find it pathetic that people would rather spend their time trying to get a "pasta tree" in a yard rather than making the community a better place.

The more I think about it, the more I think you deserve a better reply. So here's the thing: I don't think the Pastafarians are being self-righteous pricks. Not at all. Why is the city displaying religious symbols on public lands in the first place? What right do the Christians and the Jews have to have their religious symbols on public lands? And what right do they have to keep other religions out? IMHO, the only difference between Pastafari and Christianity is that Christianity was made-up longer ago.

The real stuck-up pricks here are the Christians, who not only demand that their religion be acknowledged by the government, but demand that it be the only one, or at least one of a select few, to receive that privilege.

If this is our measuring stick, than Christianity is a joke religion also. Not a single person actually seems to believe what the Bible teaches.
