This week's picks!

NO @ ATL
This is gonna be a barn-burner. Brees and Co. are unhappy campers after losing to the Niners at home, and are a lot tougher to handle than a 5-6 record would indicate. They've won 3 of their last 4 and 4 of the last 6, and they were in it to the end against one of the better, more complete teams in football in SF. The two pick-6s were killers when you consider the 10 point margin of victory. Brees is 31TD/11INTs, over 3300 yard, and a 98.5 rating for 2012. The real question isn't him, it's the defense stopping all the Falcons points!
Plus, 10-1 is 10-1. And playing at home? Atlanta is a plus 78 in net points this year, but their one loss came to these same N'awlins folks just a couple weeks back. Hmm, plus 3 turnover ratio. And the running game just isn't putting up big numbers this year either.
Early line outta Vegas is the home Falcons by about 4. I'll go with that for now.

SEA @ CHI
Seattle doesn't play very well on the road, comparatively speaking. That was a surprisingly competitive effort they put up in Miami. Plus both corners have looming suspensions for PEDs. Blech, not a good outlook for the last part of the season. That said, though, Russ Wilson has made a believer out of everyone on that roster, and he just keeps making plays. I wouldn't count him out of any contest.
However, Chicago at home in December. That defense is one of the better squads in football. Depending on how many of this weeks injured can play, I think Cutler's strong arm and ability to move in the pocket will make a big difference. Still, the Bears oline is ass, and these Seahawks LOVE to get fast pressure on the QB. Hmm.
Vegas has the Bears as faves by about 4, and I'll go with that, pending injury reports and suspensions.

HOU @ TEN
I don't get to see much of Tennessee. I see a stat line of 4-7, minus 97 in points, 19th-24th in scoring, yards, pass yards, and rush yards. I see a young QB with 59% completions and a team with a -4 turnover ratio. CJ0k still hasn't even hit 1000 yards yet, but at least his per-carry average is starting to come up a bit now (4.9). I see a decent enough special teams unit and a so-so defense.
Houston, on the other hand, is a hard one to gauge. I see their 10-1 record, but I see how badly they were abused by Green Bay, and I saw how hard a time they had against Detroit on Thanksgiving. Can't take anything away from that offense though, Shaloob just puts up points like nobody's business, Johnson is a stud, and Foster just runs HARD.
I'm gonna agree with the early Vegas line (5) and go with Houston.

NE @ MIA
Miami has only beaten New England about 5 times in the last decade. As division foes, they know each other well, and even in Sun Life Pro Robbe Landshark Stadium, I don't think the 'Phins have the necessary horsepower to knock off the Patties right now. That said, Philbin is damn fine offensive mind, and Tannehill is playing as well as anyone could have expected. Plus, that defense is stouter than most give them credit for. If they can get some receivers, the future looks bright. (As an aside, you tools that I've heard busting up on Jake Long this year? EABOD)
The Pats are...the Pats. They actually have a defense now. Oh and I'm sorry, but I can't help it:
i624.photobucket.com
I'll prolly have a bunch of company picking New England here.

JAX @ BUF
4-7 versus 2-9. *yawn*
But anyways, let's see what Henne can do. They beat Tennessee last weekend, and you've heard me say I don't think Henne was the problem during his time with Miami....I'd pin most of THAT debacle on Tony Soprano. Or whatever the hell Mr. Sunglasses at night's name is (with apologies to Corey Hart). How's that offensive genius doing at his new job in New Jerk? Yea, that's what I thought.
People are coming back from injuries, and I have more faith in Buffalo's hopes at home than I do Chad Henne. Sure, Fitzpatrick and that offense only have a combined 28 touchdowns for a minus 76 point differential, but that's still head and shoulders above the Jags (19 tds, minus 120 points). Plus, this is outside in December in upstate New York.
I feel pretty good about a Buffalo pick here.

IND @ DET
I can't bloody wait for this game. Detroit's weakness is the back-end of its defense, and that is what Luck will go for. I'm still not quite sure how Indy is at 7-4 with a minus 43 point differential, but they are. Surprisingly enough, the Indy offense is roughly #6 or so in the league in passing! Even with a 56% completion rate! However, their rushing game is pretty weak and outside of Reggie Wayne, there's nobody that really jumps off the page at you.
Detroit is ... so...special. They've got the players to move the ball up and down the field, and that's a good thing for that defense. I think their Dline is good but overrated, personally. Calvin Johnson is still Calvin Johnson, and if Pettigrew would learn to actually catch the balls that hit him on the hands for a change...
Vegas early line is the home team Lions by 4.5. I'll take that as a pick to win.

CAR @ KC
I'm really, really trying to NOT bag all over the Chiefs here. SO: good running game (4th in yards per game avg @ 145.6), stout defense (held the Denver Peytons to 17 last week), and an opening at QB to overpay someone for next year. Brady Quinn courageously has 0 touchdown passes and 4 interceptions right now, though, and they as a team are at MINUS 21 in turnovers. I know bakeries that can't claim that. Ye gods. 13 total touchdowns scored. As a *team*.
Carolina.
Then again, I watched Carolina roll over The Iggles on Monday Night. Well, most of it. Sometime during the fourth quarter, my wife intervened and, quoting the 8th Amendment, insisted I come to bed. I did in fact comply, and had to be 'surprised' to see the Panthers ink a W in my absence. Grats to them? They're still horrible, just not AS horrible. Now, they get to flop against arguably the OTHER worst team in football. Who'd have seen this equation coming in the offseason? The three worst teams all playing back to back? Its like a perfect storm of courageous suck this week!
In other news, I flipped a coin and it said to pick Carolina, and I can't really argue because Brady Quinn.

MIN @ GB
Ahhh, December, outside, and NFC north opponents! All you need is beer and brats and you've pretty much defined the "old Black n' Blue" division to a 'T'. After getting flat-out roofied by the Giants in New York, I can promise you that Green Bay's offense is going to be playing pissed off. This is a bad time to come to Lambeau, regardless, and if they already don't like you very much....you're gonna have a bad day. The question remains: How many starters miss the game due to injury THIS week? *sigh*
Minnesota: Adrian Peterson and 52 other guys. Over 147 yards per game average. 5.8+ per carry average. He's...just wow. I love watching him run. He *attacks* people that have the gall to try and tackle him. And so long as you have Jared Allen, you have a pass rush. He's a lot like Justin Smith in that way. Hard to imagine he's been doing this for a decade now! 6'6". 270. And his motor *never* stops. I hate having him on a division opponent, cause he's damn good.
Vegas says 9 or 10 already, and I think the Pack is a safe bet. Still, remember, this division plays each other hard, and to the wire. I'd hate to worry about a spread.

SF @ STL
Amazingly, they still haven't figured out who won the last time these two teams met a couple weeks back. Even in Candlestick, division football is tough games. Playing in the Edward James Olmos Dome is tough duty as a visitor. But I don't see a repeat of the last time these guys butted heads with Kaopectate running that potent Niner offense. They score more with him under center than Smiff ever did, and Harbaugh is right to go with the hot hand.
That said, the Rams aren't without weapons. A weak offensive line looks better now with the return of Wells at center. Plus, Steven Jackson and Richardson 2.0 are a beastly 1-2 punch of the backfield, and the defense is nasty. They give up big plays but make you pay for them in hits, and are a surprising +2 in turnovers. If they could get a couple receivers to actually go out and be a target for Bradford, MAYBE you'd put more points up. But since the TEs and backs have to help block so much, Danny Ammendola missed how many weeks with the collarbone thing, and is STILL their leading receiver with...576 yards? Really?
Division football in December. I'll pick SF to win, but I ain't playing points here. It would be bad.

ARI @ NYJ
Ahhh, Arizona. 18 total touchdowns with a minus 47 point differential and a 7 game losing streak. That's double tough. The upside is you still have a stout defense with a positive turnover ratio and one of the best receivers in football. The bad news, you don't have anyone to throw him the ball and the o-line makes Chicago's look good. Well, you got Beanie Wells back, that's something!
Now, as much as I want to just jump all over the J E S T, I'm gonna try and be nice here. The running game is OK (15th @ 109.5 yards avg). And...umm...Nick Folk is 3 for 3 at 50+ yard FG attempts! Woo!
4-7 versus 4-7. Vegas says it's a coinflip. Ill pick the J E S T even though I'm gonna feel really icky about doing it.

TB @ DEN
They've given up 16 sacks, and are minus 3 in turnovers. But, they're plus 97 in points scored.
The other team also has given up 16 sacks, and are plus 11 in turnovers, and a respectable +56 in points, plus a bonus in having a 1000 yard rusher.
Care to guess which is which? (Hint: Denver first, then Tampa)
Both offenses are averaging about 6.1 yards per offensive play. Big edge is sacks: Denver has 38, Tampa has 18.
Peyton is Peyton. I'll comfortably put my pick on 18s shoulders any day of the week. Don't be too surprised that the Bucs keep it close though.

PIT @ BAL
Didn't we just do this?
They're in Baltimore this time, and there's as many injuries as ever. Baltimore, while also wounded, is just a better team on the gridiron right now, with a better o-line, better running back, and a better defense. Don't go to sleep on Pittsburgh ever, but I see a fairly solid thumping by the Ravens here. Charlie Batch at 51 years old reminds us here that, if every pass you attempted clanged to the turf incomplete, you'd still have a QB rating of 39.6. So, really, his 38.7 for the afternoon is really quite an accomplishment. No, I'm not making that one up. EIGHT gorram turnovers? In ONE game? You're kidding me, right? No WONDER you lost to the Browns! (insert 'Itoldyaso' here)

CIN @ SD
The Bolts hung surprisingly tough against the Ravens last week, taking it all the way to the wire to lose by a field goal. But, at the end of the day, you are what your record says you are....and your record says 4-7. Their running game isn't getting it done, they're minus 3 in turnovers, and let's face it, losing Vincent Jackson has been HUGE. You're in the middle of points-scored (16th) and pass yards per game (18th). Otherwise you're bad (25th in rushing, 25th in total yards). I'm calling them Philadelphia West for the remainder of this season.
Cinci 6-5, and above average in most stat books (10th in points, 14th in yards, 12th in passing, 14th in rushing), a positive turnover margin, a 2-1 TD/int QB in Andy Dalton, and AJ Green already over 1000 yards receiving. But they're giving up 4.4 yards per rush on average, and in the AFC north that ain't good enough. I'm pretty sure the Bengals will end up on the winning side of this game (and Vegas agrees, they're at +1), but I wonder about the post-season.

CLE @ OAK
So, Holmgren has left the building! At this point, they're playing out the string, and it is fairly obvious that the new owner is gonna come in with a giant fire hose and blow out pretty much every one and every thing, and start over. I'll leave it to the Browns fans to decide if this is good or bad. Yea, they're 3-8, and there are coaches younger than their rookie QB, but they have SOME play-makers on that defense, and as Pittsburgh showed last week, anyone can beat anyone some times, in this league.
Plus, we have them lining up against Oakland. The Raiduhs are just a bad, bad football team right now. Minus 138 in points, 29th in rushing, minus 7 in turnovers, and a soft defense that scares no one. They really only have SeaBass, and I'm still betting that monster leg of his has a 70-yarder in it.
Regardless of that, I'll go with Cleveland here.

PHI @ DAL
What I don't like here is reminiscent of last week's late Turkey Day game....I have to root for *one* of them. Blech.
I love a good train wreck as much as the next guy, and I still have a special place in my heart for "4th and 26!". Nick Foles? That's your backup plan? REALLY?
I hate to do it, but I'll have to go with the Cowboys here. *spits*
That being said, I cannot fathom how bad the Eagles are right now. Monday night's performance hearkened back to the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which spawned the fantastic quote of "Execution of the offense? I'm in favor of it" by John McKay. They couldn't do a whole lot of anything correctly, and adding insult to injury, DeSean Jackson left the game early with a 'sternum injury'. They'll be pulling people out of the stands to play soon. I actually wished to be watching a High School game at one point last night, as that would have been more competitive. Oh, sure, a couple of defensive players woke up briefly in the second half and made a couple of individual effort plays, yes. But that doesn't excuse the absolute egg than Andy Reid laid out for us on national TV. I'm beginning to wonder if Jeff Laurie won't just fire-hose out the entire operation center and cede the last couple of games, starting over before the end of the season at this rate.

NYG @ WAS
This is gonna be a fun game to watch. Fresh off the absolute domination and embarrassment of Green Bay last week, the G-Men are in their accustomed late-season rally mode. The defense is fast, and gets crazy pressure on opposing QBs. Eli, for all his faults and really bad facial expressions, is a good damned QB and they run the ball well to boot. They're just a flat-out complete, well-coached football team.
Don't write off the Redskins by any means. They're heavy-hitting run team with a kid back there under center who is a good player. 4-1 TD to INT ratio and a 104 rating. That ain't too shabby! Plus a +12 turnover margin. They will make New York work for it. The G-Men are 2.5 point faves as visitors in Vegas. Think about that a minute. If they weren't so banged up on defense....

I mock and deride the inferior picks of others (not really) and present the only TNF pick that truly matters (also not really):

New Orleans Saints at Atlanta Falcons:
Whatever slim hopes the Saints hold of playing beyond week 17 rest fully on this game. Four games back of Atlanta in the NFC South and with only five weeks remaining on the schedule, a loss mathematically eliminates New Orleans from the division title and leaves them playing catch-up for a potential wild card berth...and they're already a game back of the current would-be #6 seed. Drew Brees & company pulled off the upset the first time these two teams met, but that was in the Super Dome; the Falcons are one of only three teams still holding perfect home records this season. The Saints' "defense" is unlikely to hold Atlanta under the 27 points they scored in the week 10 matchup, so it all comes down to being able to break 30 again vs. the Falcons' defenders. I don't see that happening in the Georgia capital. 34-28

more tds than fgs? that seems pretty unlikely given the red teams running game these days, 33-31 red team but that is just my take

/considering most Thursday night games have had the relative entertainment value of Jaguars-Chiefs, it isn't saying much

week 9 vs cowboys

turner 20 for 102 1 td
jones 1 for 8 0 tds
ryan 1 for 8 0 tds
snelling 1 for 5 0 tds
rodgers 3 for 0 0 tds

week 10 vs saints

Rodgers 3 for 29 0 tds
turner 13 for 15 0 tds
m ryan 2 for 2 0 tds

week 11 vs cards

turner 15 for 46 1 tds
rodgers 5 for 16 0 tds
snelling 1 for -1 0 tds
ryan 3 for -3

week 12 vs bucs

rodgers 10 for 49 1 tds
turner 13 for 17 1 td

so 1 and a half 'good' performances out of the last 4 weeks isnt exactly installing cofidence, particularly turner averaging 1.9 yards per carry over the last 3 games.

turner is looking pretty close to done, i am hoping that rodgers can emerge as a feature back, I'm not saying that the saints run d is good, but rather that the atl running game is just that bad.
