I guess she wasn't that funny, after all.

2012-11-29 09:14:44 AM
Well, she has been dead since 1989.

That's dumb. Do you think anyone know who Susan G. Komen is, either?

I remember the moment I read about it while doing my paper route.

This.

So? You keep the name and let people find out through some source like on your site or maybe wiki. There are a ton of charities and foundations named after people who were long dead before this current generation.

I can't wait to go to Stockholm to collect my Bieber Peace Prize.

I say we update everything. Because really, who know who Susan B. Anthony was these days? I say we remint the coin with Cher.

2012-11-29 10:10:37 AM
That's why you have an About page or something similar that details who your support group is named after and why you chose to name it after them.

Didn't Gilda Radner die of ovarian cancer? Who is more well-known than her who died of the same illness?

I propose getting rid of the standard unit of magnetic flux density, specifically the Tesla, and replacing it with ICP references.

10 ICP = 1 WTF

Well, the official name is just "Gilda's Club". Which, I can understand that that isn't a known entity to younger folks (heck, even people born in the 80s, she died when they were pretty young).

But, why not just rename it "Gilda's Cancer Coping Club" or something of the sort. You can put some explanation in the name without taking a persons name out of it.

.... Never mind.

A cancer support group?!?!? Why does cancer need support? Is cancer sad? Has it been abused? Did its house burn down and now it's living in the street, having to eat out of dumpsters and beg for money? Cancer is a horrible disease. It's a cancer on society and should be eradicated. I don't support cancer and neither should you...

As other people said, a little "Founded in 1989 after the loss of comedian and actress Gilda Radner, who succumbed to ovarian cancer, this group...." language on everything they do and problem solved. It seems ridiculous to change the name, and in an odd way, disrespects her legacy but probably what bugs me more is it has to feel hurtful to her family.

I was only in 8th grade when she passed away and I'm not a huge fan or anything, but it's really not hard to find out who someone is/was in this day and age.

Yes, but, how would you even find out about it? Hopefully "Gilda's Club" is under "Cancer Meeting Groups" in the phone book, or the doctor's office would give you information about it, but, maybe some don't, or you'd go look it up, but, again, just seeing this from a 20 year old's POV, and for the organization who wants to make sure people find their organization easily. I don't see the issue as "people who join the club will get confused"... my assumption is they don't want people to just gloss over it because "Glida's Club" meaning nothing to them.

I do agree with some of the comment's that "Gilda's Club" give you more of a "Warm & Fuzzy" than some sterile "Cancer Support Group" name... which for the people it is intended for, I think is important as well.

These analogies are inane. Susan B. Anthony and Tesla were pioneers of feminism and electrical engineering, respectively. It's not like Gilda Radner was the first woman with ovarian cancer.

It's a memorial fund, dumb ass. The person's name isn't the promotion, it's being promoted. Ads on benches are not the same thing as memorial plaques on benches.

This is dumb. Reminds me of the time when the manager of the John Wayne Airport wanted to change the name to "The OC Airport" because a couple 16 year old girls didn't know who John Wayne was (and to ride the coattails of the OC TV show that was out).

What about things like "Adam's Law" or "Halley's Comet?" People should hear the name and then look up to see why they've been so remembered.

Just because some dumb people don't know something, doesn't mean everything has to be dumb to accommodate them.

Madeline Kahn? Honestly, though, they shouldn't change to accommodate others' ignorance.

They should keep the name, but I understand.

I mean, Gilda Radner didn't do much beyond SNL. And old SNL reruns haven't been shown on TV for a LONG time.

If she had been in a couple of big/hit movies, people would still know who she was.
